How long have you been involed in the MA's?
SBN Doug replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
A little Katate/TKD mix in high school. But only seriously for the past 11 yrs (or so) in Kuk Sool Won. -
Yeah, this is pretty weighted toward TKD. If you want me to move it to the Korean forum, I will. Or, you could revise it to be more generic accross multiple art's grading systems.

KSW in Los Angeles area?
SBN Doug replied to PrideampPoise's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Exactly. You could also call headquarters in Houston for more information on clubs in the area. -
Wish me luck tomorrow!

A common response for one's DBN test. However, I still almost spit out mu coffee when I scrolled down to it. Yes, as you said, it's harder to concentrate when you're that tired. And that's exactly why they do it. You'll be thankful as you start your BB testing over at headquarters. They sometimes last 3-4 hours, and you're jogging in place durring your "resting" periods. I remember one time I and two others were scheduled for a make-up BB test, because we had all be away. KJN Harmon made special arrangements for us. By the time he and the other BBs of the various schools started showing up for their training at headquarters, I had been testing for about 3 hours ALONE! He was none too pleased that the others didn't show, and congradulated me for being able to handle the extra challenge. Congratulations. -
Anyone ever seen a red belt do this....?
SBN Doug replied to swooshfinn's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Same here. This IS what testing is all about. Testing your mental control when your body has been pushed to exhaustion. The promotion is debatable. If she performed all the material correctly, I would probably give it to her. That sparring is a little excessive, compared to most of the schools I've visited, for brown. She's got plenty of time to continue working on it. -
I'm going to move this to the fitness forum, and point you to the sticky at the top. Lots of links to all of the topics already started on stretching. Lots of good answers out there. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=6186

The responses are starting to get a bit off topic, and in doing so getting too political. Please bring it back to the original question, and if need be begin a seperate topic in the Politics in MA forum. Thanks.

Tough one...what do you guys think?
SBN Doug replied to Musipilot's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm moving this over to the political forum. There are actually two threads that are discussing this already. The first more than the second. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1637 http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=11618 I encourage you to give you input on those threads to keep them going. -
I'm "homeless" .... Help
SBN Doug replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Your 25 mile ability confused me. Depending on the roads, that's about 30 minutes (which these claim to be on Mapquest) Unfortunately, club type classes aren't listed on the website. But you could call either of those schools and they could confirm or deny that community college class for you. -

SBN Doug replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think I suggested this the last time you were looking, but there are two KSW dojangs about 30 minutes from you. One is in Williamson, and the other in Webster. I believe one of our KSW members here is attending one of those schools, but I can't remember which one. -

Hey, maybe you can put on a hundred pounds, hire a guy to act as a stupid middle-aged son, and you can play Buford T. Justice. -

Hehe! Isn't there some Federal law against transporting alcohol across state lines? Key KSNDoug, I'll help you "dispose" of the evidence if you make it down to H-Town with a trailer full of Sam Adams! Well, I've got the black Trans AM! I guess I'll get my wife to drive the U-haul as Bandit 2, and I'll meet you at the BBQ. -

Yep, that's Master Harmon. About August this year, I should be able to get back to classes at his dojang in Houston. I am sooooo psyched!!!!! No more of this once a week, after an hours drive, garbage. -
Hands considered deadly weapon?
SBN Doug replied to drunkenninja's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Here's a similar thread: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=7659 A couple good links to legal debunking sites too. I'm moving this to the same forum. -
I have to agree with everything said so far. As long as he wasn't taking your head off with those strikes, then it really just shows where all the holes are in your defense. I had that done to me about half way to 1st degree, and SHE was quite skilled as well. Tell me that didn't put me in my place, a 6', 200lb guy getting totally owned by a 5'10" woman.

No issues with one club trying to "steal" members from another club??

Oh sure, put me on the spot. Well, to be honest, I'm trying to get a read on the true nature of your concern. I see conflicting messages so far. I see that your classes aren't as rigorous as they were when KJN was running them, but you're not sure the pain of the level of training is worth it right now. You seem dissapointed that they aren't working the class as hard, but you're concerned that you level of conditioning has decreased too much to handle that higher level right now. First, regardless of what everyone else is doing, decide for yourself what you want out of it right now. If you want to slowly ease back up to speed, then enjoy the lighter pace for the moment. When you're ready to ramp up, there's lots of things you can do to make it more difficult for yourself, without affecting the rest of class. Students are students, and human nature always tends toward the easier road when allowed, so try not to be hard on the colored belts. The other instructors are in a difficult situation, where they probably don't want to rock the boat, and potentially loose students while KJN is away. So, try and be patient with them as well. As stated before, turn you focus inward. Now is the time, at DBN and up, that you need to develop your ability to focus critisizm inward, toward your own skills vs. potential, and not outward. The best thing you can do for the colored belts is to push yourself harder than asked, lead by example, and potentially your ensuthiasm will be contageous. However, by all means, keep training! -
Best strangle holds?
SBN Doug replied to Rich_2k3's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I'll have to take your guys word for it, as I don't study it. However, when I was doing some training with a BJJ guy, he demonstrated the triangle with my choking arm up through his legs, not below them. He was actually pulling my arm up his torso, hooked his legs, and locked me into place. In that position, my own arm both choked me, and kept distance between my teeth and his body. (Moved to grappling forum) -
Please try and keep to only stating facts about other instructors/ organizations. Leave out the derogatory comments, please.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. They still had the splits by ranks. But I did notice it was difficult determining who should be at what level, because of the different belt systems (open tourneyment, remember).
