Kuk Sool Form Applications
SBN Doug replied to taiji fajin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
O.k. then, we are the same on the first. Your school seems to focus more on the ki in the beginning than the ones I've been to. You will use what you've ben taught to make the arms solid and pull them appart. Right arm comes back to shoulder while left remails more in front. On the second, I'll have to disagree. They may seem similar, but one is simply a double-handed grab at the wrist, while te other is a definate double side palm strike. And, as you know, the fingers must be spread, and the angle correct for the palm strike. The fingers should be together ( except of course for the thumbs) and adapt to the attacker's arm angle on the block. -

I've fustrated a number of opponents by simply starting of in cirgle mode. I tend to bounce lightly, like a boxer, and move in circles around them as they attack, avoiding everything. Then tend to get mad, and think I'm just scared of attacking. That usually makes them have a lapse of consentration after the first few attacks, as they try to figure a way to get close to me. Bam, jump front kick to the solar-plexus. Oooo, I'm sorry. Did you want to breath? I also like one of our spinning hand techniques that we learn. Step forward, same side hand reverse knife hand, come back with same hand other dirsection knife hand, step forward reverse knife hand left, step behind w/ right, spinning knife hand w/ right, straight punch left. With all the hands flying, and moving forward, they usually get caught moving straight back instead of in a circle. -
Kuk Sool Form Applications
SBN Doug replied to taiji fajin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
A very interesting topic to start. I must admit, I've been a been lazy about remembering the subtle things within the forms I've noticed. However, I'll be going through them quite a lot this week getting ready for the test, so I'll try and remember some of the things I have noticed. On the other hand, I have already noticed a subtle difference between some of our movements. I've never seen a ki expansion (I assume you mean one of the Ki Cho Jah Ki) before the side kick in Guhm Moo Hyung. I've only seen double mantis grab, pulling the attackers apart, before the side kick to one and the inside kick to the other. We also do not have any double palm strike in Joo Muhk Maga Ki Bohn Soo #8, just a lock/pull under with the left and single hand strike with the other. So, we may come up with an interesting discussion on the subtle differences in how we learned our hyung & techniques as well. -
Kicks above the waist in a real fight?
SBN Doug replied to longarm25's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That pretty much says it for me too. If I had their arm or other leg in a hold, maybe, and definately if I already had them bent over. But, I wouldn't take the risk, myself, if they were still at full highth with full mobility. -
Could never get her to try it. She's always been a "Beauty Queen", and she's worried about pain in her joints. However, here's a very successful couple, that i have the honor of studying under. http://www.taekwondotimes.com/images/cp067.gif

Well, that IS good news. On second thought, forget the mop. I hope your organ donor card is up to date. -

You need to be very fast with that one, though. I've caught many with my right arm by stepping in as they turn, and sweeping the other leg. -

Hmmm, the BB in me says "Go easy, and make sure he gains some valuable experience." The father in me says "Get a mop." -
Sorry guys, there's already a few threads going on this topic. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=17742 http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=15327 Just to name two. Lets add to those, so the info is all in one place. I'll close this one.

Conflicted about upcoming promotion...
SBN Doug replied to Beka's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree. Trust your instructor to do what's right. You may not be AS ready as someone else, but you have plenty of time to clean it up before the next test. Now, if you didn't even know all the material, then that's another story. -
Man How Misinformed is the Public on MA!!!!!
SBN Doug replied to Samurai Shotokan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Just caight up to one of my co-workers from 7 yrs ago. (We just moved back to the area) He was telling me a funny story about his two boys when they were 7-ish. We were at a party with them, and my 7 yr old daughter was out in the yard playing tag with all the rest of the kids there. The next party, at a different house, his boys asked if my family was going to be there. He said yes, but why? Cause we're scared of her. Why in the world are you scared? Because she knows Karate!! We're scared of her dad too! Ahhhhh, my plans are comming together perfectly!!!!! -
Well, this poll is long overdue. Good idea!

Does your religion effect your martial arts?
SBN Doug replied to Muaythaiboxer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Shotochem, is your class held next to the U.N.? J/K, it sounds like you've got one of the most diverse classes I've ever heard of. Something I'd expect to hear from N.Y. God bless America! -
Which is more popular TSD or TWD?
SBN Doug replied to Knifehand007's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Neither, I've never practiced either of them. However, if I had to guess, I would say Tang Soo Do. It apparently has more of the grappling techniques I like in Kuk Sool Won. -
Kuk Sool Won Practice Schedule
SBN Doug replied to taiji fajin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Oh, of course. He doesn't get the credit for his explanations, only his physical training methods. He's extremely good at explaining all the mechanics of your techniques, and showing the basic physics behind it. All the second and third degree levers we form from proper joint manipulation, centrifigal force, etc. On the other hand, you need to be ready for anything. Because I was in better shape (no injuries) than my instructor up North, he was demonstrating proper technique on me for a certain throw. He was only showing the right way to grab and to position their arm. I made the mistake of asking what the proper fall was (the apponent is in an aquard position). He glanced at me, then through me. I found the proper falling technique. -

Yeah, he's awsome. I started with him years ago, and now am back since I moved back. Mrs. Harmon KJN is a great instructor as well. Master Sims will just plain work you into the ground. The most phyically challenging training I've ever had has been under Master Sims. -

Does your religion effect your martial arts?
SBN Doug replied to Muaythaiboxer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The problem some people run into is their religion's strict policy on non-violence. And, even though most MAs promote control and self-defence only, the interpretation they have of their religion contradicts the teachings of the MAs. Others are practicing both a religion and a martial art who's roots are intertwined. For these practitioners, a lot of the meditations, teachings, etc. are going to be similar in both their art and their religion. Therefore, you have already answered the question, yours hasn't affected your training at all. Mine has not affected my training either. -
How to keep training with a busy schedule? Help!!!
SBN Doug replied to Fat Donkey's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My article is my first reply: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=14047 Secondly, if you are not in deperate need for the extra money, don't pick up as much of the overtime. I remember almost working myself to death back when I was on a rotating shift schedule. All that overtime made for a nifty bank statement. However, I was sacrificing everything else I enjojed to do it. -

Sorry, I don't know Korean geography. Here's a quick link to the official KSW site with school listings in Korea. http://www.kuksoolwon.com/schools02.html You'll have to click on each of the regional listings at the top to see the individual school listings. Hope this helps, and enjoy your trip. -

Yeah, I only got it with the "one push-up" at one test. It hurt. Anyway, the knee issue is a real one. Just ask ZR440. That's why he had to change arts. At KJN Harmon's dojang, we do not have students start working on low stances until DBN. Even then it is occational. It really doesn't become a focus until JKN. The meditation for under black belt comes at the end of every single class. However, while in CT, the dojang I trained at almost never did meditations. I've seen JSN in a low stance, but only in pictures, and not all the way to 90 degrees.
