Nope. We train to hit pressure points, from multiple directions, using multiple parts of our bodies. But the only aspect I wish KSW would expand on is ground fighting. On the other hand, I have had the opportunity to spar around with some BJJ friends, and we were able to show each other some weakneses in each of our defenses.

I didn't say I'd take you to your back. But point taken.

Interesting. I thought HRD was close to KSW, and we are almost never under their hip, or have them off balance, before grabbing their arm. We are typically trapping the arm, getting a lock on the joints, and then stepping in and pulling the arm to get them off balance. We are also taught to drop our wieght to counter attempted throws (in certain situations) For those of you in KSW, that would be Bahng Too Ki set when you get to brown. However, to counter 1kickKOs point, if you drop into horse stance, after I have your arm locked properly, you could possibly either dislocate a joint on yourself or allow me to simple take you straight down with the lock. (Depending on which lock is applied)

Inspirational to say the least. Have you had a chance to read Sai's article? http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=4858&highlight=wheel+chair

Dee Eue Bohk Soo #20, for one example.

I seem to recall the same thing. There are a few outcasts out there, that just didn't want to play by the Grandmaster's rules any more. However, that's the same in most other arts as well.

KSW BB testing this week
SBN Doug replied to krzychicano's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I'm sore, but doing fine. There were only 8 of us testing for 3rd, and Master Alex lead our testing. A whole mess of testees for 2nd and 1st. And that's only the brown/blacks that were promoting today. There was another testing at 1:30 for all the other DBNs. 2 hrs straight of non-stop everything. I did well on everything, except of all things, my under black stuff. I just haven't been practicing that material enough lately. Esspecially when we skipped through all the sets. Oh well, I have my homework for May. -

Nahh, he's too mild mannered. You want some shots of beatings, wait 'till Master Sims is demonstrating on me. Now there's some bruises. -

Yep. It demonstrates the 2 P's, and gives you plenty of time to make all the previous material second nature. They also like you to begin teaching (or just helping out in class), which also makes your basics much more solid. -
Yeah, that's pretty much my sentiment as well. 1st degree usually means you've a solid grasp of the basics. Then you start your martial arts training. If your particular dojang doesn't teach anything new after 1st degree, then a Hapkido, KSW, or TSD school would blend well.

After 1st - Wait two years. After 2nd - Wait another three years After 3rd - Wait another 4 years After that, it's entirely up to Kuk Sa Nim. Because the next step is Master. -

Mrs. Suh (Mrs. Kuk Sa Nim) But I may still not have the middle word spelled right. I've never seen it written down, only spoken. -
Difference in Korea and The US
SBN Doug replied to Carnage's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
One of our Masters came back from a Korean trip a couple years ago, and was absolutely enranged at how sloppy a lot of our Korean colleagues techniques were. Of course, this was only his opinion, and he has high standards. But he definately broke the myth for me. -

When you apply for a permit to open a KSW school, you have to sign a document that states you will teach KSW in the same manner as is outlined in their policies. They might not complain about adding a sprinkle of non-standard teachings in, like extra ki "exercises" or stretching. However, you better not show or allow your students to show, any of it in the presence of Kuk Sa Nim. That would just be disrespectful. On the thought of an additional school, that's a little more tricky. I doubt they would look farvorably on you running two arts out of the same school, while having the KSW logo on it. However, these are all things to be discussed with Kuk Sa Nim and Sa Mo Nim when you get closer to being ready to open something. -

Yeah, that can sometimes be the case. I did learn new material right away, because there is a lot to learn between 1st and 2nd. However, you always have to wait the same number of years as the next belt level, before you can start testing again. 2yrs before testing for 2nd 3 before third etc. I knew all the material for 3rd a few months after 2nd (long story), but I'm just now starting to test. They like you to be solid in what you already know. -

Uh, yeah. I'd like some of your viniswashi and we'll try some eskargots. Got any tarter sauce for those? Oh yeah and bring us some of your Bejorlet wine, with some sprite on the side. -

If that's the case, we might all three be testing together. The more the merrier. -
Nothing picks you up from an exhausting test faster than your Master's compliments. Congratulations.

That describes my whole school, most especially my Master. It also helps that KSW has additional material to learn at every belt level. Eventually, I hope to get to the healing techniques at Master level. -

Oooo mama! I started my training under SBN Mike. He was KSN at KJN Harmon's dojang when I started. He's always had great elevation on his aerial techniques. He left when I was around Red to start the Meyerland school. -

taiji fajin, I've heard it's typically Master Dickson, Master Alex, or even Master Harmon if a lot of us from his dojang are testing. The DBNs used to always be lead by Master Roper, but I don't know if he still does. In that case, good luck to you as well. -

SBN Doug replied to krzychicano's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Yeah, I'll be there. I've been informed that the black belts usually go outside for testing. So, you'll see me dieing, I mean testing, out there. Actually, since they changed the format, and put the promotions between the morning and afternoon tests, I'm not too concerned. -
A very valid point, taiji fajin. I think you should bring that up to Master Sims before a test you take with him presiding. (He loves starting us off with 5 min. of that stance in "the valley of pain".) Just make sure I'm behind the desk, and not testing. Honestly, I never did a 90 degree horse stance until after first degree. Before that, they only taught us to make our stance strong enough to hold a person standing on each leg.
