tangsoodo VS taekwondo
tufrthanu replied to tsdshep's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
YMCA Kwon Bup = Ji Do Kwan. The original kwans were all formed between 1944 and 1947. Choi's Oh Do Kwan was not formed until 1954. -

footing/leg stance question..
tufrthanu replied to osuperu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes I have problems with that stance as well...my one of my legs is extroverted which I think may cause me problems. I can get my feet to point forward by my knees tend to bend inward...alternately I can point my toes out a little and have the knees properly...which is usually what I opt for. I also can't get as low as some people. I have seen people do a horse stance with their thighs parallel to the ground. This causes me extreme discomfort in my hips so I usually do it with my thighs at about a 45 to the floor. -
footing/leg stance question..
tufrthanu replied to osuperu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You misunderstood my point. In a traditional back stance the position of the body and hence the weight is over the back foot. By centering the weight and hence your body you lessen the degree to which the front leg is stretched out. Another thing to try is to be more upright...not bend the legs as much. And you may feel that you have to do everything perfectly but that is actually unrealistic. Even grandmasters have quirks in their posture and techniques. They may ask you to fly to the moon and you should try...but you will only get so far no matter how badly you want it. -
footing/leg stance question..
tufrthanu replied to osuperu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I am of the school that says if it hurts dont do it...and if you have to do it modify it. Try centering your body more over your legs so that the stretch isnt all coming out of one leg. -
It's very simple really Packer. Building muscle burns fat. Now I assume that you want to get muscular and strong but not bulky. For instance are you aiming to look like a bodybuilder i.e. schwarzenegger or an olympic weightlifter. If you just want to get more muscular what you are doing is fine. Once you start lifting the weights you will probably not lose alot of weight at first because the muscle growth will take up for the fat loss. The guys that are eating thousands and thousands of calories a day are either very very very muscular or very stocky. Best bet is to eat fairly normally...carbs proteins fats. Start lifting weights...if you start to feel week you can add back in more protein and carbs...aka musclebuilders and energy source.

3 day workout - Which muscles to work on each day?
tufrthanu replied to BritNoob's topic in Health and Fitness
Bent over rows work your lats mostly... plus maybe your forarms and shoulders a little bit. There is another back exercise you can do with dumbbells im not sure of the name but you hang your arm down while bent over then lift the weight straight to the side. That will work the muscles between the shoulder blades. Then there is one called a good morning...which i think is basically just standing straight up then bending forward at the hips and then straightening again. Remember to be careful with your back. Shrugs will build your traps. thos are the muscles that run between your shoulders on the back of your neck. Not sure anything will increase whats in your collarbone area. Just excercises for pecs and delts. -
I disagree.

Then you did indeed misstate yourself. It becomes not a case of the techniques being a grapplers but of the knowlege of positioning being a grapplers. Given the same position a striker could implement any of those techniques.

UFC/NHB illegal in California?
tufrthanu replied to PackerManDan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
As of the new issue of Black Belt magazine it is reported that on Feb 22 2005 it was voted 4-1 to allow MMA in California by the board. They are currently working on the ruleset. -
Pure TKD is not sport. That is an aberration brought on by trying to get it into the olympics. Even in a sport karate school like the one I got my dan at they tought finger pokes and throat strikes which could be used for self defense. Now I am at an even more traditional tkd school which mixes in hapkido/ho shin sool. If you look at Gen. Choi's 1965 book Taekwon-Do you will find in the back hoshinsool techniques. Defenses to wrist grabs, bear hugs, knife attacks and so on. They don't involve wrist locks or any thing of that sort basically just common sense and striking but it is still effective SD.

To say that kicks and elbows and head butts are not a strikers weapons but a grapplers is not to understand striking at all.

3 day workout - Which muscles to work on each day?
tufrthanu replied to BritNoob's topic in Health and Fitness
Tom Kurz in his book has a workout plan that covers 4 days with each group being worked twice. Every basic plan i have ever studied including in high school and college weight rooms has been based on a 2-3 day cycle. -
Well I agree that "full contact anything (sorta) goes" type competitions do favor a grappler over a striker for some of the reasons above...safer to choke than punch to the throat for instance. I also think that alot of those rules involve a safety component...alot of them drastically increase the chances of lasting damage. But its a point nonetheless that alot of a strikers most effective blows are eliminated. And I think whether with the rules or without this applies. If you notice in no form of full contact striking are many of those techniques allowed...while their grappling equivalents are used frequently. But whether from design or not alot of them do lead to a safer fighting environment.

That's an interesting point. Does anyone know what the official rule set was that the Gracies first used for UFC?

3 day workout - Which muscles to work on each day?
tufrthanu replied to BritNoob's topic in Health and Fitness
Well brit you have to work every group at least twice a week. If Liams routine has some of that you could use that. Remember almost every exercise you can do with a barbell you can do with a dumbbell. I would bet the reason the seated military press is much harder is because your arms are having to work individually with the dumbbells instead of complementing each other like they did on the machine. Free weights also utilize alot of stablizer muscles that arent required on a machine which can make them harder. Here are some exercises you can try that work with dumbbells: Back...Bentover Rows Pecs...Dumbbell Press or Butterfly Press Legs...Squats, this is about the only exercise you can do with dumbbells and you will be limited with how much you can get from the floor onto your back...if you have a machine for leg press or leg lifts and leg curls use that instead. Calves...Calf Raises...same deal as the squat except that calves can take a ton of weight relatively speaking. Triceps...French Curls but pully and weights with a Tricep extension works too. You can also do Dumbbell kick outs. Biceps...Preacher curls work the best but are much harder than regular curls. -
2 step flying side kick. From your left foot forward backstance, step forward and out at about 45 degrees with the right foot, then step back into line with the left foot jump and kick with the right leg.

3 day workout - Which muscles to work on each day?
tufrthanu replied to BritNoob's topic in Health and Fitness
Well honestly Brit if you are only gonna work out 2-3 days a week you should probably hit everything each time. I mean if you do three different routines that means you are only going to hit the same group once a week which isnt nearly enough to build muscle. Basically if you just want to do a general weightliftin program you only need several exercises. One for the lats, pecs, abdominals, quads, hamstrings, calves, biceps and forearms. Bench press can work both the pecs and the triceps.and you might be able to hit the traps and delts with standing dumbbell raises to the side. But basically if you are only weight training 2-3 times a week you need to do a whole routine. -
You should look and see if you can find either an XMA website or a gymnastics website...both will tell you how to do hand springs and flips and stuff.

I always use a T Square and a power saw to make my circles.

You should be icing it not heating it. In case there is a slight tear you want to reduce the bleeding as much as possible. But the best advice for all injuries is RICE. Rest Ice Compression Elevation Pulled muscles can keep you out for a week or more depending on severity...if you are just starting tkd ask your sabum if he can test you at a later date. If you try to test with a pulled muscle you will probably be able to fight through the pain however you will make the injury much worse.

TKD Round Kicks
tufrthanu replied to Superfoot's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
It's a great striking tool against the right target and for those of us not able to do one with the ball of the foot. Because realistically you could do a ball of the foot round kick in a tournament is easily as one with the instep so thats not really a very good way of explaining the difference.
