  1. I agree that ATA is definitely business oriented...however that doesnt mean they dont produce quality martial artists as well.
  2. There are other reasons besides multiple opponents for not going to the ground. Things such as debris and any mystery liquids that may be on the ground. It also takes away a persons most valuable asset. Mobility. Once you are tangling with someone on the ground you have lost your ability to run away if things get bad. Alot of martial artists feel that if you are taken to the ground you have already made too many mistakes in a street fight...but assuming you end up there your first goal should be to defend so that you are able to get back to your feet. Family members may be restrained without tackling them in some fashion...they may fall down...but it isnt necessary to put them on the ground. Personally...I could care less if you want to roll around on the ground...do what you want it's your self defense system. And if you'll notice in my original post I said that I like the techniques just not the policies.
  3. First off its not a generalization of anything. The gracie strategy has always been to take someone down to the ground and grapple with them. And that is a bad idea in a street fight. I don't have a problem with learning defense from the ground...I have a problem with making the ground your first priority.
  4. Going to the ground in a street fight is a bad idea.
  5. I've got a couple I'm partial to. I like Hwa Rang...and Empi the most I guess. Even though I'm not sure what the hand presses are supposed to be in Empi.
  6. Whatever tickles your pickle!
  7. When my father took TKD back in 1973-4 there were only 8 gups. And they only had 5 belt colors. 8. White 7. Yellow 6. Green 5. Blue 4. Blue 3. Brown 2. Brown 1. Brown Personally I don't think it really matters what colors the belts are as long as there is some order.
  8. I agree with martial man I personally know two former head instructors in the USSD system and both of them admitted that they were mcdojo's. If you want to do open tourney sparring and flips/tricks...try looking into an XMA oriented karate or taekwondo school. Unfortunately alot of these also tend to be mcdojos as well.
  9. I agree. It sounds as though your instructor is trying to switch from a karate school to a kickboxing school. The only reason he still has karate is cause you still teach it. Better to move to a new school where you will be respected and trained by your instructor.
  10. 80 dollars a month for 4 classes a week in MA is ok. Its probably on the low end for that area...especially if you happen to be near any of the big cities. The private lessons seem a bit expensive...personally I don't think you need them unless you find yourself falling behind on a regular basis. If so you really shouldnt need more than one private class per month to keep up.
  11. Perhaps the confusion comes in because there are both TKD and TSD Moo Duk Kwan schools...I don't know when that split happened but perhaps that was in the 60's.
  12. Taekwondo's history is Shotokan karate so its perfectly reasonable that their form sets would resemble it. Also many of the original kwans had their own form sets that arent used much today...in addition to the ones we've all stated.
  13. ATA used to do Chang Hon set.
  14. What are the names of those forms?
  15. Once again the term Taekwondo was officially adopted in 1955 NOT the 60's.
  16. I guess it depends on which forms your ata does...some of them do Chang Hon forms and some of them do their own forms. Personally I think the Chang Hon formset is the best...but it probably follows more closely with traditional karate. Personally I feel that the Tae Geuk set are too simplistic. Currently I am learning the Chung Bong set of forms...most of them are fairly basic as well but they seem to use a progression in skill which I like.
  17. I got it from a differnet source but thats the text I use. I have it on wordpad. That one you showed has been highly edited however and from what my version shows it was the late 50's when the various kwans started stealing each others names.
  18. Randori is like free sparring...but for grapplers. I think.
  19. Tae Kwon Do was the official name adopted by the kwans in 1955 so I'd like to know where you got your proof that they didn't use it til the early 1960's. And yes taesoodo was the name used prior to 1955 by some schools that is not the same as Tang Soo Do.
  20. Well someone posted the rules on UFC somewhere else here and there were like 33 of them so you'd probably be better off just looking it up on their related websites. Basically though UFC and Pride are grapple/striking competitions whereas K-1 is basically just kickboxing...however K-1 also has Romanex which is their MMA segment and various other "seperate rules" events.
  21. Well first off...if it takes you 10 years to get to black belt you are doing something seriously wrong. And once again it's not just the school but the individual. Some of the worlds best fighters got their 1st dan in little time...not because they went to a mcdojo but because they practiced all the time.
  22. You are correct. I was confusing it with the Choson Yun Moo Kwan Kong Soo Do Bu (Ji Do Kwan). But my point was the YMCA Kwon Bup was one of the five kwans I listed...in this case Chang Moo Kwan instead of what I put.
  23. Depends...how often does he go?...does he have alot of aptitude for it? Bill Wallace got to black belt in a year and Joe Lewis did it in 7 months.
