  1. No, too much was learned in Vietnam to prevent it from happening again.
  2. People really misunderstand that going to class with smelly feet is really poor etiquite.
  3. Itosu preceded the so called styles. He was taught by Matsumura who was trained in the shuri tradition. It was called tode at the time.
  4. I wouldn't do that if I were you. That would be extremely disrespectful. When you start class that is how you will be addressed. It is very traditional.
  5. Pet smart Four men were talking about their pet cats. The first man was an Engineer, the second man was an Accountant, the third man was a Chemist, the fourth was a Government Worker. To show off, the Engineer called to his cat," T-square, do your stuff." T-square pranced over to a desk, took out some paper and a pen and promptly drew a circle, a square, and a triangle. Everyone agreed that was pretty smart. But the Accountant said his cat could do better. He called his cat and said, "Spreadsheet, do your stuff." Spreadsheet went out into the kitchen and returned with a dozen cookies. He divided them into four equal piles of three cookies each. Everyone agreed that was good. But the Chemist said his cat could do better. He called his cat and said, "Measure, do your stuff. Measure got up, walked over to the fridge, took out a quart of milk, got a ten ounce glass from the cupboard and poured exactly eight ounces without spilling a drop. Everyone agreed that was good. Then the three men turned to the Government Worker and said, What can YOUR cat do? The Government Worker called to his cat and said, "Coffee Break, do your stuff" Coffee Break jumped to his feet, ate the cookies, drank the milk, peed on the paper, sexually harassed the other three cats, claimed he injured his back while doing so, filed a grievance report for unsafe working conditions, put in for Workers Compensation and went home for the rest of the day on sick leave.
  6. Many women were brought up not to be aggressive. It is hard to break through what has been ingrained since childhood. Maybe starting them off with more one, three and five step drills to learn how to make contact, block and begin to learn control.
  7. Welcome to the forum. And, believe it or not, you are not the only over 40 here. It is much better to start now than to have never trained at all.
  8. Here are some links on the Chinese dragon. http://www.crystalinks.com/chinadragons.html http://www.q-net.net.au/~dazsal/dragonspage.html http://library.thinkquest.org/CR0215373/ Try these to start.
  9. Best thing is to go in and get started.
  10. Do you mean something like Casey Marks is the best female competitor with the bo in her hands?
  11. I can't remember how many times I swept the floor before class. My pet peeve was that I was the only one who shook the dust mop out afterwards. There were times I would go get the dustmop only to find it allready full of ropes of dust.
  12. Here are links to some other discussions about belts that have taken place here. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1716&highlight=belt+colors http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=325&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 Here is a link to a site with some information on the history of belt colors. http://www.24fightingchickens.com/shotokan/101/19_belts.html
  13. Welcome to the forum.
  14. The addition of the -San suffix at the end of names is a sign of respect. I have been at schools that use it and some that don't.
  15. Oh man, and I think the guy is such an a$$. Actually a brown belt can be a 3rd, 2nd or 1st kyu depending on the school.
  16. I forgot what the purpose of this thread is. Let's see what do I find I like about shotokan? I think it is one style that has the free-est exchange of information of the Japanese/Okinawan styles. And with the popularity of the style there are more of both McDojo's and good dojo's. It is easy to find someone to train with in different areas.
  17. Sad to see how one man can ruin the future of a generation.
  18. Pack your lunch the night before. And include snacks that can be consumed between classes.
  19. A pushup is moving more of your body weight than a crunch.
  20. I was reading else where about someones third kyu test. It seems they had this problem. Their pants kept falling down while they were sparring. So there they were with the full splendor of their red bvd's showing while someone was trying to take their head off. A reall delima - stop and pull up the pants and get killed? Or, ignore the pants and keep going.
  21. Continue with a physical training regimen at home.
  22. Sure they will probably even have them to sell to you right there.
  23. Congratulations. In many ways the first test is one of the most important.
