  1. As with other things the state of how your belt is tied matters more the higher in rank you rise. When trying to teach kids how to tie their belt it is easier to have them find the middle of the belt than but than over their belly button so that the belt is bound to wind oup crossing in the back.
  2. Many of the deep fried thing found in oriental resturants are not true oriental specialties. True traditional wok cooking uses very little oil. And is heavy on veggies.
  3. If you are contagious training is not a good idea. And overexting oneself while under the weather can dramatically extend the recovery time. Training when you are so sick you can barely stand up is not a good idea. I think it is much better to wait until the flu is over and you are at least 50 % to return.
  4. I practice at my gym. An empty racketball court is great. Karate pants are great to work out in. I have never gotten any funny looks when I have worn mine to work out in.
  5. Welcome to the forum.

  7. Welcome to the forum. Actually there is a bit of a compromise between medium and heavy weight gi's - there is a 10 oz gi.
  8. Welcome to the forum.
  9. I used to add snaps to the inside of my gi's.
  10. The underbelt, colored belt, ranks are called kyu grades. Every successive test becomes more difficult. At the early tests most schools allow a student an opportunity to do a skill or a kata over again if they made a mistake to prove that they know the material. The higher one rises in rank the more difficult the test. The higer the rank of the test the fewer mistakes, bad stances and the like are tolerated. At that point if people are passing tests with lots of mistakes I would find another school.
  11. It is really annoying. I can't take my guinea pigs outside for an outing in the grass because it is always too wet. The one day I caught it warm enough outside and dry they had cut the grass and my girls came in with green bellies.
  12. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=8307&start=10 There is another active thread that covers this topic.
  13. There are other posts asking this question in the grappling section of the forum.
  14. It is just one of the many branches of shotokan.
  15. Very rarely. Maybe just at festivals. I live near an art institute that hosts a fall Octoberfest and a Greek Orthodox Church that hosts an annual Greek festival. Then not enough to get drunk.
  16. Please remember to keep the tone of the posts respectful and non-insulting in nature.
  17. Welcome to the forum.
  18. Generally one starts a new style as a white belt. However when there are similarities between styles there may be schools who accept the old rank.
  19. I think it is a rare for a beginning student to not have trouble with power.
  20. There have been enough disrespectful posts in this thread to warrant it's closing.
  21. Congratulations. Sparring was always my weakest area too.
  22. People tend to forget that there is an inherent physcial risk in what we do. And don't really think enough about those risks and what level of training and sparring they want to do. People may disagree with me but there are many different reasons to train. And to train to go full contact and learn how to beat the stuffings out of someone is not the only reason to train.
  23. I looked at one form out of curiosity and then kept looking at them because I was seeing so much I recognized. Funny I find the more I learn the more similarities I see between the arts.
  24. Most musical katas you see done in competition were created by the person peforming with help from their instructors.
