Good point Yoda.

Personally I had been training in karate for about 9 months to a year before I began kobudo training. In my school weapons are taught as a seperate class and students must be of 8th kyu rank to start and have sensei's permission. We start with the bo and rotate sai, nunchaku and tonfa every year.

They were generally used singly. Many were very ornate and more ceremonial than anything. It seems they were an ornamentation of rank in the civil services.

Someplace running around here are a few threads on makiwara, complete with links to how to make or buy one. Personally I do much of what others have traditionally done on a makiwara on my wavemaster. I find the way it moves across the floor an indication of how much power is being used. And the way the way that it bounces back is different than that of a hanging punching bag. The link to Makawari work is http://www.karateforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=2052&forum=13&23 _________________ KarateForums Sempai Shotokan Karate, bo, sai Karate means a better life [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-04-29 18:04 ] [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-04-29 18:05 ] [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-04-29 18:08 ] [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-04-29 18:09 ]

Help I am addicted to Martial arts!
SaiFightsMS replied to Taokara's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You would not believe how much my cat hates it when I wake her up in the middle of the night because I am practicing kata in my sleep. -
Spinninggumby I like the way you think on this topic. And by the way, many females regardless of age do not like to be thought of as chicks.

emmm so what is done in the ceremony in which a thai boxer pays homage to his teacher? Very curious. ty

Girls in Kung fu?
SaiFightsMS replied to rabid hamster's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Hiya your experience is typical of females practicing in many areas of the martial arts. I trained for several years as the only female in class. -
Maybe the returning wave kick is raising a knee to prepare for pushing away an attacker on another bike who wants to knock you over.

The rage should be channeled. Preferably into training. This is where traditional training philosophy differs from more modern training. In striving for perfection of character. The longer we train the better we should become at channeling the rage. And maybe one day even not having the rage.

Age and when you began
SaiFightsMS replied to rabid hamster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was like 37 when I started training seriously. When I was 18-19 I did a bit of training but did not stick with it. It is really never to late to start training. -
Welcome to the forum. I have noticed several posts about capoeroira recently.

I found this great game in the bargain box at the computer shop and immediately got hooked. Diablo is great. I had to get the battle chest with Diablo II and the expansion. Has anyone else ever played and done battle with the dark side?

I think that many who really get into working with a bo have more than one. A bo they like to use for kata and forms. and another one for banging around and making contact. We tend to sand our bo's and keep them smooth.

Shiko dachi Bitseah? Kiba dachi (horse stance has the feet facing straight forward. Shiko dachi has the feet facing out at a 45 degree angle and ideally the thighs parallel to the floor.
-
Lets's not forget going into kosa dachi (crossing the legs) can indicate taking a turn. So if you want to do a bicycle kata don't cross your legs just turn. Any kicks in a bicycle kata would pretty much have to be done to a low level or you fall off your bike. Tekki done from horse back one of the myths of karate. It is just a term used to describe the position of the feet.

Life is better with a sense of humor and the ability to laugh at oneself. -
Hello Tessone welcome to the forum. I have to say I really didn't know when I started training that I had the right art. But after training a short time I became hooked.
