  1. It is a KI/CHI in the fact that it requires proper breathing, stance and movment in a flow from your feet to your knees to your hips to your shoulder to your elow to your fist. The training I take refers to it as a wave form. Once you get good you can use other weapons such as your elbow, palm, forearm and generate alot of power.
  2. Take your time , do not rush thru the KATAs it is not a race. Breath and kiai properly. These are thwo biggest things I see when people test thru the KYU 's
  3. STARCHILD IS A CLOWN . do not buy into his *. also COMBAT KI is the brain child of a person who has LIED about his training. Do search on E-BUDO.COM and read the proof for yourself. The stuff they teach will never work in combat it is a carnival side show. This I put in the same arena as NO TOUCH KNOOCKOUTS taht some people are selling at seminars. I study the application of TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE to the martial arts. and would love for someone to try to knockme out without touching me. I would touch them , alot and it would hurt alot.
  4. I do not doubt ability, I was stating preference for myself. I have seen my coach pull a jump spinning back kick while holding my Gi so distance has little to do with it it you are good at the technique. Good at the technique is the key. However DISTANCE is very important to good technique. Also if someone grabs my gi I lock the arm/wrist up asap and start working on the joints to cause pain and break balance. This is what OKINAWAN karate calls TUITE JUTSU. As always IMHO
  5. Yes , if you are 15 and she is 22, trust me she sees you as a good kid who helps her. If you stare at her she will think you are wierd. If you only train with her and I am sure you take it easy on her you will look the fool when everyone else who trains hard kicks your *.
  6. battousai16 - The great thing about these forums is to see how others would do it. I stay real close , always pressing so I would keep on top of the person as they are stumbling. Also since we do alot with grappling we would have a hold of them looking for a chance to break something. We also stress kicking low so I would also be taking his knees at that point. As always IMHO
  7. you just had to but in did you. darn rookie. If this was directed towards me , I have been training over 20 years. I would not call that a rookie.
  8. NO since I study an OKINAWAN style.
  9. Also, "well, we've always been told that flying kicks are used in the off chance that someone is stumbling off balance. one you've taken their balance, their amount of available counters are slimmed down, and a flying kick always looks pretty in said situation. and intimidating for anyone else watching" If thay are already off balance. The amount of counters start building when they are off balance just drop them with a throw or strike. why risk a move where you have your feet off the ground , or give them the chance to gain thier balance. And if one of those watching is a friend of thiers they will blast you as you land. see above comments. As always IMHO
  10. 1. TEKKEN IS A GAME , NOTHING IS REAL, They used the guys in the green suits because it was cheaper than programming that moves. 2. JET LI DOES NOT FIGHT HE IS A WUSHU DANCER. HE SAYS SO HIMSELF, JACKIE CHAN USES WIRES. 3. In a point sparring situation like TKD tounaments Jump Spinng kicks may work. In any other situation once you go up you will be dropped by anyone who stays within arms length. In the style of KEMPO I train in we stay real close and even spinng is very hard to pull off. In any real fight nobody is going to stay far enough away to pull one off. That is also only on games, tv and the movies. As always INMHO
  11. Angel - I would suggest that you look for a dojo who teachs these concepts to self defense. As stated there is more than just knowing where they are to make use of them. Prehaps if you give your general location we could recommend a good school in your area that would help you with the information you seek.
  12. I tend to stay real close when sparring , I find that jump/flying kicks are not that effective given the way we spar in the dojo where I train.
  13. I think that not being stable with feet on the ground is a pretty big opening, step off blast when they land.
  14. Fact is they were ment for taking riders off of horses. Same as some of the KUNG FU weapons that are swords with very long handles. These kicks were devloped many years ago. In a sparring match I would step to the side and blast they person as they landed.
  15. Sasori_Te - well said, my thoughts exactly.

    Bunkai

Yes it is at the core of the style I study. not only the the techniques already pulled, but you need to do your own BUNKAI and be able to show its effectivness. You can find that some major movements can be interpeted many ways. Example, I have a great book by Rick Clark called " 75 down strikes " He shows shows 75 quality uses for a down block/strike.
  17. I study Ryukyu KEMPO ( okinawan ) our testing goes as follows. white- yellow-orange-green- blue-purple-brown-BB,canidate, black belt WARMUP lots of pushups, jumping jacks situps, horse stances. Black Belts do these non stop between other requirements, no stopping just 30 second water breaks if they feel kind. kATA , all needed for the belt, purple and above SANCHIN includes being kicked punched and pushed. Higher the belt harder the contact KICKS , STRIKES-COMBINATIONS needed for the belt level KATA breakdown, self defense move for each major movement of each KATA. Brown and above need to show some knowledge of the Preassure Points involved. BLACK BELT needs to be able to explain the Preassure Points, Five Element theory, yin-yang theory behind the technique ARNIS, erscrima stick- patterns, disarms for belt level, Brown Belt and higher two person sparring drills SPARRING. This is not Point Sparring. There is no break in the sparring because of contact . White - blue 1 on 1 . purple and above spar 1 on 1 and 2 on 1. Black Belt Canidate and above non testing high ranking students/instructors come in to help spar (beat up on you ). They all Line up and one at a time come at you, every 45 seconds the one you are sparring drops out and a new one comes in all rested up. Depending on how many you may spar the each one two or three times.
  18. no , it was RKA ( ryukyu kempo america )in Flemington NJ, when frank moved to VA. he changed it to AMERIQUEST. I am so so on the name, but it just a name the training is what matters. I like Rick Moneymakers TORITE and Ray Hobson who trained under frank works closley with Frank Annease and Rick to maintain the training level.
  19. Vital point striking plays a major role in my training. I also use them in grappling/ self defense techniques. For those new to "POINTS" angle of the strike is very important as well. In regards to setup we use the concepts laid out in YIN-YANG and FIVE ELEMENT theories.
  20. The one that gets me is the person who starts a school of a new style because he knew better than anyone who has taught him, jumps from 2nd dan to 5th dan in the process. Then the STUDENTS promote him to 9th or 10th dan of his new style.
  21. Sasori_Te I also train in TORITE under Rick Moneymakers lianage. One of my instructors Frank Annease prchased the DRAGON SOCIETY home dojo in WAYNESBORO VA. at Ricks request and works closly with Rick and Tom Muncy. I agree Ricks approach differs from DILLMAN'S. In the late 80's I trained under one of OYATAS senior students he was a 7th dan in 1988 I met MASTER OYATA on several occasions and agree with you. If you ever come to New Jersey send me a message, theres always room on the floor. RYUKYU KEMPO is not based on DILLMANS teaching, rather DILLMANS are based on RYUKYU KEMPO as many other versions of RYUKYU KEMPO are.
  22. It depends on the lifestyle they are living , type of cars , homes , vacations etc. to answer part of this. The proshop is a good idea if they are not raising the price to excessive amounts. Does the cost per month cover all classes are are there charges for each type of class. The training is a simple one, If they know the level of knowledge is not at the level they would pay for then the are not as regretful as they say. If this is the only job the have then they need to get on the floor and teach more. They need to watch the classes and make sure the senior students are qaulified to teach. Teaching is not something everyone can do, I know fourth and fifth degree BB who can not teach at all, they can fight like a demon but can not teach. So ask them flat out " Would you as a trained MA pay this price for yourself or one of you family to take this class, as taught by these instructors? The look on thier face will answer the question, I think the fact they asked you to do this already does.
  23. My issue with MMA schols is who is teaching there. alot of them are as follows. not all mind you. the person trains a couple of arts , but does not stay with any one for more than a year. He learns nothing but basics. Then he opens a MMA school mixing these styles. This just like the Blue belt who open his new self breated style and makes himself 5th dan of that new style. The moral of this story is contact the people who taught the instructor and find out what they think of him. then check these guys out as well.
  24. I think the point was made treebranchm with "that was then, this is now. I don't hear much Gracie activity in UFC anymore. Fighters have learned how to handle grapplers now, so now it's all about who the best fighter is. Not what the best style is. " They were not at PRIDE, not listed on the card for K1. question for the GRACIE purists Do you actually train MMA or do you just bore people with it at parties and message boards? If you did you would know your standup striking /kicking is as important as your ground skill.
  25. This is a very popular subject lately. UFC IS A SPORT COMPETITION, for all the BJJ purests did you watch PRIDE this weekend. It was not a grappler defeats all . K1 will have much more striking. The point is you need both because the only reality is you do not know how it will go. Remember the GRACIES SELL BJJ TAPES and BOOKS so the say all fights go to the ground because they take it there. Just like DILLMAN sells BOOKS ON PREASSURE POINTS so he says it is all you need being narrow minded will get you nothing but pain sometimes alot of it.
