Ooops Oh yeah, sorry. Guess I had a "brain fart!!" When I trained Japanese Goju we did not do Chishi either. Infact I had never even heard of it until I started Okinawan Goju.
-
Chishi=Power stone: The chishi is traditionally a concrete or stone weight at the end of a wooden handle, like a dumbell with a weight on only one end. It is mainly used to strengthen the grip, as well as the joints of the elbows, wrists and shoulders. The exercises develop the muscles used in blocking, striking and grappling techniques. This a basic description. Chishi is commonly used within Okinawan Karate styles. As you do Okinawan Goju-ryu RedDragon I am surprised that you are not familiar with it. Although it is not essential training so some schools have probably dropped it. SaiFightsMS: Patience is a virtue..........that I have most of the time

The owner of these forums and the person you just quoted. Oh thanks Kyle-san very informative And there was me thinking that he might be some kinda martial artist -
Kata bunkai is the backbone of our training. We learn, develop and train them extensively. I will use the moves in sparring although not in competition type sparring. I could teach kata and nothing else. It is all in there. Study your styles kata and bunkai and you will achieve untold depth in your style.

Master Morio Higoanna splays his toes when he kicks. I think that this is due to these guys training so much in gripping the floor with their feet. When gripping the floor you splay your toes and grap the ground like you would with your hand! Erm that doesn't really make much sense does it? I can do it, Sensei can't!!!!!!!!!!!

What is your sensei's attitude towards this guy? It maybe worth having a word with him. Tell him you do not like to partner with egoboy. Sensei may insure that you no longer do. Worth a try, if a student of mine expressed such concerns I would feel that it was my duty to keep you happy.

Mmmmm Nightshade are you "her" Don't be shy we don't know who you are.....hehehehe Seriously (that was a joke above) I would never be able to convince my better half to attend a MA class it's just not her. As the person you are talking about (lets call her Mary) has been training before you may have a better chance. But bare in mind that was 30years ago. I presume that you train? Don't think that taking Mary along to your class will be good because it will probably only raise her embarrassment. I would suggest doing a little training with her at home this may get her in the right frame of mind. If not maybe you should just accept her for what she has become. Maybe Mary has become more of a stroll along the beach type woman, or a little keep fit together at home. Maybe she would enjoy something relaxing like yoga. Why don't you talk to her

The colour belt you wear should represent your ability. If this guy is better than a white w/stripe then he should be allowed the opportunity to earn it. In regard to putting himself forward rather than being selected. I think that all depends on his attitude. If he tells sensei he is ready for yellow rather than ask I would not even consider it as he has much to learn. As he reminds you of Tommy I guess he is not asking. My own sensei has failed people on their attitude despite their skill being adequate for the grade.

I trained at a TKD mainstream club a couple of times, just out of interest. It was okay but it promoted the kind of stuff that people like to "bash". The thing is I still picked up a couple of things. People should look for the good in things............ Later I done some training with my friend and his mate, they are both ex army. Apparently they had trained TKD with the Gurhka's and I tell you what it was something else. If people saw what they did as TKD it would not get bashed at all. Or would it..............

If this is where you feel you have the advantage then this is where you should be placing yourself when you spar.

Who is Patrick O'Keefe anyway No disrespect meant -
I was fighting adults when I was your age as well. Some general advice: Make the most of your speed. Sidestep if you can. In then back out again. Dance about like Muhammed Ali. Wait for the opponent rather than attack. more anybody...............

Well that answers a few questions that I raised myself about the evolvement of the karate Gi in another thread. Thanks for sharing it with us

Hey Gino. Yes I have seen your reply and am most grateful. I am in awe of your opportunity to train under Hanshi Steve Arniel and am most humbled by your presence on the forum. It would seem that the closest club to me is Gravesend. Not the easiest place to get to from here. But one day............. Do not be concerned with being a "know it all". You must have a great deal of knowledge to share and I am sure that noone will complain of you sharing it with us. If we already know then that's all very well, however there are many lower grades/ beginners on the forum. Indeed, I for one would be interested in how to tie my belt to be used as a weapon. Let's see if you can describe how to do it better than I can describe how to fold a gi.................
-
Yes that's why I said "initiate the power".
-
I may be wrong in saying this but most if not all high ranking karateka will use the rear leg to initiate the power in a technique. It is a fundamental part of the technique. A master like Mas Oyama would undoubtedly use the rear leg to maximise his power. The more you train the more you will understand.
-
Yes it is. Could you describe how to fold it? This is how I do mine: Lay the jacket out on the floor. Fold the pants in two (one leg on the other) and tuck it into the jacket. Fold the left sleeve to the right shoulder and the right sleeve to the left. Fold the Jacket left to right and then roll the whole suit up. Use the belt to tie into a nice parcel. The belt also doubles as a handle. I've done it this may since I read a book by Frank Perry, who described this as the "proper" way to fold your gi. How does this compare with your method?
-
So what cars are you considering now? That VW Lupo 1.4 Tdi Sport is looking to be ideal for you now isn't it Insurance. I hunted around for ages for quotes and I must say that Directline came up cheapest I was very surprised I thought they would be quite expensive. Give 'em a call, they are a superb company to deal with.

Yeah keep close inside of the swing. Alternatively keep your distance and allow the swing to pass, or intercept the swing. JUST AVOID THE BAT. Then finish him with strikes to vunerable points, get the bat if you can, use it if you know how or get it well away so that he may not use it again.

Hello. What does the 'azn' stand for 'cause theres an aznkarateboi on the forum as well.
