Advanced techniques are a better understanding of basic techniques, putting basic techniques together can make an advanced combination. The "nice" moves are to be found in kata bunkai. Look to your kata if you are looking for "new" moves.

That really is nigh on impossible to answer!! Find yourself a very good instructor is the best advice that anybody can offer For speed: the main thing is to relax and practice speed drills. To learn to move fast you must train fast. For power: Technique, technique, erm did I say technique? This is why you need good instruction. Obviously if you are of a strong build you will have stronger technique. As you progress and your technique is coming along you should try to develop the power in your tanden (lower stomach area). I hope your instructor is upto the job

Training at the dojo is available 3 times a week, but due to shiftwork I can only attend an average of twice a week. I try to train at home whenever I can, even if it's only 30 minutes. My life is soooo frustrating.........I want to train all the time!!!!!!!!!!

Hello again everybody!!! I was on the forum for a while until my pc gave up on me. I was right in there reaching towards my BB in karateforum, straining my brain to give a valuble answer to as many posts as I could........... Sometimes blessings come in disguises, as the Biblical saying goes. Without my pc keeping me glued to a chair all day I realised that I had time for other stuff, training, reading, being with the family. I realised that I was addicted to my pc and to this forum. Not a good thing. So now I have a new pc. I will still use it but in other areas and sparingly. Everything in moderation. I will stear clear from forums through fear of addiction. Don't get me wrong I will visit. Patrick has done a superb job with the site and it really is a valuble training aid. Use it wisely. So I guess it's good bye Or maybe it's more of a see you around. Remember as valuble as knowledge is, it is practice that will make you great. Train hard, relax easy

Well a friend will soon have a copy of Macromedia studio MX 2004 which includes Dreamweaver, or so I am told. As I stated b4 I am completely naive, so I have a couple more questions: What are domain names? What is web hosting? How do I get a site online? Can a site generate money or will it only cost me money? Anything else that you think maybe relevant will be much appreciated. Please excuse my innocence

The hook kick is a weak kick do not expect to develop significant power with it.

Well what do you know? Last time I visited the forum this thread had been locked I wanted to highlight that the fact that some people are so single minded in the pursuit of martial excellence is not a bad thing. Sure there is much to be learnt from other styles and arts but being the master of one style is a major achievement. As competent (or should that be incompetent) as I am I would not wish to take on a master of any style!! I guess it's the old Jack or Master debate, but noone can deny that a master is worth much admiration.

Karate Kid marathon!!!

I believe it too be Goju. Since Master Chojun Miyagi was the founder of the Goju style and also in part 3 (I think) he performs a Goju kata Saunchin, I believe. Daniel was a geek, I would've been so much better The films are full of simple karate wisdom: "belt hold up pants........, karate do yes, karate do no, karate do guess so, squish just like grape". Mr Miyagi is full of it....... The Cobracons were superb and Daniels girlfriend was probably my first love!! -
You're right Cheeks, give Tai-chi a chance you may indeed be missing out on something. I did Shotokan before moving to Goju. When I started Goju I thought if only I had spent the last 4 years studying this instead of Shotokan!!! And now with my current instructor I can only wish that I could turn back the clock and study with him from day one. Sometimes I feel that I have wasted 13 years of my training life................

A wise man treats everyone as a worthy opponent It would seem that you have an advantage but others may be doing the same or have some history. you just don't know. Don't let over confidence spoil your chances. Good luck though and I assume that you will post your achievements........ -
Hello Melinda Just how old was/are you?

Bob Breens JKD school springs to mind. Dartford and London. -
The higher stance is actually stornger than the low stance. The legs shoud be 45 deg to the floor this will ad strength to you stance. If you liken it to a squat; when squating you are at your weakest point at the bottom. If you push back up when your just halway down you will find you have alot more strength in your legs. Back to the stance. Assume a low kiba/shiko dachi and get someone to push down on your shoulders, resist. Now try the same exercise with a higher stance and resist. The answer should now be obvious. The thing I always hated about kiba dachi was turning the toes in. I found this to be most uncomfortable. Shiko dachi is much more natural.

Isle of Sheppey. You? -
Excuse me as I have not read all responses Firstly I was training with the seniors when I was 13. No allowances were made for me I just had to keep up with them. My skill was on par with theirs and as far as I am aware no problems ever arose from me being there. It seems that you debating whether a 14 year old can take a class. Well I do agree with GrrArg. If I walked into a dojo and saw someone heading the class I would turn around and walk straight again. Sorry but I think that you would find that most people would react this way. Even if the young instructor is talented I don't think that they command the respect of the seniors. On the flip side as an assistant instructor I think that they will do fine but again the respect wil lnot be the same as for a senior.

Just the way he is. -
Apparently there were dangers to the body in the way sanchin was performed. Over the years it has evolved to make it a little less taxing on the body. So you're only 9% bodyfat stencil, thats impressive and i was going to start using sanchin as an excuse for this gut i seem to be developing!!! Never mind i'll have to just keep watching my diet.

Hey Cheeky I have forgotten why you said you wish to train in 2 styles. It was due to the Shotokan class not being regular enough wasn't it? Anyhow. I'm afraid that I disagree with most of the other posts. Yes shotokan and tai chi will compliment each other but I think that you need a deep understanding of one for the other to compliment it. You will understand soft (tai chi) but will not appreciate it's value. So in respect of the arts complimenting each other yes I do agree. But studying them at the same time this early in your martial career will not benefit you as a martial artist, as much as it would if you had a strong foundation in one of the arts. A bit controversial, but it is just my opinion................

telsun replied to Smiler's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I am not the only one Kev, they pop up here and there, infact there are actually quite a few. Jujitsu ties in lovely with Goju you are lucky that your instructor teaches JJ as well as Goju. Where are you? -
Never ordered from playwell. What you after cheeky? I might be able to help.

Too old to start?
telsun replied to The Red Guy's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I think that you are too old. Give up on the whole martial arts idea you'lll never be any good. You need to start training below the age of 10 if you really want to reach any serious level of competence........ Now do you really believe any of that As others have said you are never too old and at 15 really you are still very young to be starting. Now what would you have done if eveyone said "yes you're too old." Could you give up the idea of training in MA? Don't let anything restrict what you want from life
