  1. AND THE WINNERS ARE................??
  2. Yes and how an introduction should be......... Shorin-ryu Sensei, by concepts I was just looking for a simple summing up of your style i.e "a relaxed style concentrating mainly in body evasion with upright stances." Or something like that. It was kinda difficult to understand some of what you were trying to say, seems pretty "standard" stuff. Relaxing throughout the technique until impact. Perhaps I am over simplyfying what you said. Anyway thank-you for taking the time to share all that with us. It made for an interesting read and allowed us further insight into your karate. I look forward to your further contributions.
  3. What kind of "info" do you require? Would you like to tell us a bit about yourself in the introductions forum. I see you're a full time instructor, but where are you?
  4. I don't understand this comment. You are only likely to practice it wrong if you are taught it wrong. Why should you wait until you are an advanced grade to start? I am aware that performed incorrectly it is harmful, however, it has been modified over the years to make it more "user-friendly" for want of a better term. Atleast it has been with the association I am with.
  5. I started karate at 11 and am still doing it now 17 years later. I was mature for my age. I am now teaching my daughter, 5 years old, karate because she wants be be like me!!!!!?????? When I start my own dojo again I am unsure as to whether I will teach kids at all. If I do I will only take in a few as they can be extremely trying to teach, although extremely rewarding. The thing with teaching kids is that you can really only teach the superficial stuff, basically how to compete. I do think that they will benefit given the right instruction but the moral side of the arts is probably the most beneficial area on offer to them. Obviously if a child starts young and maintains their training all the superficial techniques will eventually become skillfull moves with depth. Should a club take on a 5 year old? Well they can become very skilled in their movement and benefit greatly from training, so yes I think so. If the instructor is comfortable with it. Although as stated above it is unlikely that I will take any younger than 10. Should they receive BB at a young age? Erm......no, I don't think they can show the responsibility required for the grade............or can they?
  6. Seisan - Nidan in Goju Sanchin - varies, but should be taught from day 1, as it is the "essence" of the Goju style.
  7. I'm glad you agree
  8. Well the comp. never happened, but I would've won it!! I didn't stick with the JJ. I have finished the living room but the debt is going to take a while. NEW SHORT TERM MA GOALS Achieve 2nd dan at end of November. Establish MA connections within my area, train at local clubs. Drive myself forward in my association.
  9. I was once told: ITF - In The Face WTF - Watch The Face Which implies that ITF allows hits to the face and the WTF do not. As I am naive in these matters I do not know how much truth there is in it. Probably not much
  10. Yes - when there is no threat of testing. No - you would have to be a complete idiot.
  11. I also dabble in JJ but, like you, I cannot give it the dedication required to become competent. I have brought various books on the art but generally find the intricacies difficult to follow from a book. It is also very beneficial to have a partner!! I do not recommend books to train from. Their good for a few tips, etc and you will benefit from them to an extent but any book that makes promises is generally a rip off and reserved for the naive. My advice to you would be to stick with the shotokan karate. Perhaps buy a few JJ books and videos. Train at a JJ dojo whenever you can and find a like minded friend that you can practice with. As you get further in your karate studies you should find further locks, chokes and simple throws (more sweeps, actually. But takedowns none-the-less) being incorporated making a later transition to JJ quite easy. Patience my friend
  12. Welcome Paul. I for one value your input to the forum, your experience is apparent in your posts. I am humbled by your presence. It's nice to finally have some background on you. I cannot confess to knowing much about Shorin-ryu. Would you care to brief us it's concepts?
  13. I agree with delta1. An impressive kick to watch but not practical. Learn it so that you can show off.
  14. I cannot believe that you require the opinion of others as to whether this is a good idea, am I missing something? What I do believe is that you would like everybody to know what a great opportunity you have available to you
  15. Okinawan Goju - Power comes from the ground initially. Hips play a major part (of course), Body has a heavy, but relaxed feel moving towards target. Focus is primarily in the tanden realised by correct breathing and contraction. Obviously if you are quick with good technique you will be powerful. Or if you are naturally strong you will be powerful............if you are big, strong and fast with good technique then lookout
  16. You could try this Freestanding Punchbag Frame http://www.martialart-superstore.starwebz.com/product-9.html Bit costly but it fits the bill............
  17. You think the first paragraph dissed karate? You wait till you have read the whole biography. He is reknown for his skill in karate but as you will see he resents this. The reason that I thought of you was that he is a true rebel. But I suppose that in hind sight he is quite the opposite to you!! He has absolute disrespect for tradition and etiquette and most definately does not believe in the value of karate. Makes for a good read though. Enjoy!!! (or not as the case may be)

    Club opinion

Are my posts visible???? Perhaps I am a little harsh on the club I suppose it's not that bad but it has nothing to offer me.

    Club opinion

Urmmm? I presume that you have not read my post just above yours. I know the club and it really is as bad as it's website.............
  20. Fireka alot of things will probably change when you enter the navy. I am sure that you will have lots of opportunity to train in combat. Good luck to you. When you train just train for the sake of it. We all have idealisms but we make the most of what we've got. Train because you love to train. I was reading something the other day and thought of you. It does not seem so relevant now but please take the time to read it (it's quite lengthy). You may relate to the guy you may disaprove, but he is rebelious and a legend. http://www.morrisnoholdsbarred.co.uk/biography.htm
  21. What part of London Robin? Would she only be interested in karate or any MA? I am more than happy to help, there are many superb schools in London and they cover the majority of styles.
  22. Wanting to be awarded a black belt is not exactly a rank rebellion. I have been a 1st dan for ten years, I would be a 3rd dan now if I stuck to the association I was with, but I didn't. Now needless to say I am one of the better 1st dans in my chosen association and none of my peers ever believe that I am "just" shodan. However I am no different from them, I get no special treatment from my seniors. If I want a grade I will have to take the grade. Your expectations of others are high. I think that your rebellion will end in dissapointment.
  23. Apparently this http://www.karategoju.com/ is not a very good example of a website, which is quite fitting. As I have it in mind to develop a website or two (eventually, one day) could you guys give some advice as to what makes a good site. Please submit your advice in the following ways: 1. Rip the above site to bits, so I know what not to do. 2. Give some general advice as to what does make a good site. 3. Post links to sites that you think are impressive, with an explanation as to why you think so. 4. Anything else. Also if you have your own m/a website for your club or association, how successful has it been?
  24. So where exactly are you, near London? Who you training under?
  25. Hey Robin What's a beautiful lady like you doing with a sense of humor like that? Honestly it did make me chuckle ...........a bit!
