TKD Blocking...
granmasterchen replied to Dijita's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
i use the sideways stance....yet i manage to block kicks with my shins with no problem, its just something that you get used to doing , you learn to adapt to what ever stance that you are comfortable with.....i have fought individuals that use the straight on boxer stance and i have been able to fight very effectively using that stance even with the low kicks....it may just be me, but it is something that i simply got used to over the years of training i supposse/. -

i recently went back to the states for a visit and stopped by and spent a class with my old blackbelts that are still there....after going through the various katas, we got up to a kata that no one there could tell me about, since the two head instructors weren't there....the name of it was the korean kicking kata...i am guessing that it is up in the fourth degree range or higher....just curious if anyone has info on it that they can share....

i did that back in my old days of training, two 5o lbs bags of sand over each shoulder, i would run through the hills and forests around where i lived and ended up carrying them everywhere i went, it did wonders for me and didnt cause me any problems, when i worked out with them...i would run and hike and such, then once i got into the hills a good distance i would find a nice tree with a decent branch, break out some rope that i had, easy to wrap around your waist, and then i tied the bags up and used them as a punching and kicking bag suspended from the tree branch,....i still think that it was great training till this day....but thats just me.....others may disagree greatly....but i liked it...

The Dynamics of A Street Fight
granmasterchen replied to cymry's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
its all true what you guys say. 1.the best way to prepare is by training hard. 2.The moves that you use most often in practice will be the ones that come natural to you in a real fight. 3. you will be high on adrenaline, if you have the bad luck to be in more than one fight, you may learn to start to control this element...so as not to black out and have more thinking and strategy( this is not a good reason to go start street fights) 4. real fights have no rules, bite, groin, eye gouge, fish hook, rip off ears, what ever it takes 5. be prepared for anything, there is a great chance that your opponent may have a weapon and friends to back him up 6. in a street fight, due to the fact that your opponent may have friends, it is not good to go to the ground... 7.hit hard and hit fast, move around, dont make yourself an easy target and take out your opponent as quickly as possible, this is not a game remember 8.when training , wear clothes that you would wear in real life...jeans, a suit.. etc. not all people travel to and from work in a gi, or sweat pants, i myself have all my work outfits checked before purchase to make sure that i can kick and move fully in them, even my suits 9. nothing flashy, this means no jump spinning kicks...unless you are really fast and good with them....but generally a big no 10. dont worry much about pressure points in a street fight 11. the only time you will be using submission holds is if there is only one attacker...so dont bother in a group unless you have already knocked them out 12.never stop the attack, keep striking until it is over and the opponent can not defend himself, you dont want to run the risk of him getting back up or pulling a gun....end it fast.... i will stop there....just some things to remember...on the street there is no judge no referee and no rules....no one is going to stop the fight for excessive contact...this is your life ...you either keep yours or you lose it....i myself like my life and i will do what ever it takes to keep the bad guy from taking mine....and he wont ever like it. -
KAJUKENBO
granmasterchen replied to mack530's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
well the only reason that it is taught here(with this instructor at least) is due to the military base located in the area. I am stationed at Misawa Air Base on the northern part of the main island of Honshu about 400 miles north of Tokyo. The base consists of Japanese Military known as Japanese Self Defense along with mostly Air Force and Navy...there are some Marines and Army as well, just not many. The instructor for the KajuKenbo here on the base is a high ranking enlisted navy man that was originally taught in Hawaii. He has his third degree and takes his students down to Hawaii at least once a year for a tournament there. This same instructor is teaching an escrima and knife seminar come june ...right before he leaves to go somewhere else....but that is the way of the military ...maybe if you are lucky he will pop up at a location near one of you. He is a very good instructor and our martial arts community here will greatly miss him. -

yep, i have been studying it here in japan for almost 2 yrs, under a 3rd dan, the style originates from hawaii from several masters that were friends and got together to make a hybrid style,...very nice in my opinion...but thats just me, if you have any questions i would be happy to forward them to the instructor here, just drop me a message -

Celebrity fighter-The Best?
granmasterchen replied to Rich_2k3's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Chuck Norris Jet Li Jackie Chan Stephen Segal Bruce Lee Jean Claude Van Damme Royce Gracie Weslie Snipes Dolph Lungdren Jason Stratham???? I dont know who that last guy is ...sorry I am a big fan of the old Jackie Chan and Jet Li ...Bruce Lee and Royce Gracie just dont do it for me....Chuck Norris was Great back in the day...and Stephen Segal was pretty good to , just not too well rounded to my knowledge...And Van Damme was actually pretty good before he became famous....well i guess that goes for most of the celebrity martial artists.... -
i can do complete splits and straddles all the way to the floor, when seated with legs out wide i can lean forward and touch my forehead and when standing straight legged i can bend down and touch my palms and still bend my elbows....i am pretty flexible for a guy that was told 4 yrs ago that i would be paralysed and bed ridden for the rest of my life....

i learned it for brown... if you can send me the bunkai on it through a private message i would really appreciate it..

belt color changes with the number of your posts..... -
i agree, unfortunately i trained some of this "combat hapkido" in california, monterey area back in the late 90s, it was taught by some people that really sucked...i would have maybe given the instructos a yellow belt instead of black they were teaching things like charging into combat with your head down and go straight for them like a foot ball player.....man did i have fun with some throws and sweeps with those guys....

granmasterchen replied to stl_karateka's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i study everything i can get my hands on, i work with the military so i travel alot and get to experience many different styles....and i take what i like and toss what i dont, i cross train hard core. i started off with boxing, and moodukkwon taekwondo, then went to asahi ryu karate, shotokan karate, kickboxing and 13 weapons system, then combat hapkido, then kuksool won, then kaju kenbo, ninpo budo taijutsu, moodukkwon tang so do, itf and wtf taekwon do, then some kyokushin karate....that about sums it about, i have done alot of training and practicing with individual trainers outside of a class for judo, juijutsu, wrestling, aikido, capoera, tiger and mantis kungfus and a little bit of this and that..... -

granmasterchen replied to Sho-ju's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
i'll agree with both views ..... many of the oriental arts originated with chinese influence and kung fu...... alot of the european arts came from the egyptians, the greece and romans..... but what most people associate with martial arts today has been strongly influenced by ancient chinese travelers........thats how they spread, a japanese traveler here a chinese there, a korean here and there until they became more popular....and of course i didnt forget the indians either, buddidharma i believe was his name, made a big change for martial arts way back then....so neither of you are wrong , you are both right, but just remember that the original knowledge came from outerspace...the aliens are behind it all!!!! does it really matter exactly where the very first part of martial arts was started at???? i understand the debate of the chinese influence....but we discussed that....so all is good right? -

lets face it you're all wrong martial arts came from an advanced alien species that bought a martial arts book at their local alien wal mart and left it on earth by chance, an animal tore into and the pages scattered to different areas of the world that is why we all have different martial arts in different ancient cultures and they all can relate to each other in a way yet are still different.....good thing those pages were waterproof...... -
