3 benchpressing related questions
TheDevilAside replied to Exponential's topic in Health and Fitness
I doubt this is good for me, but I do that and it works pretty well. -
Scared? Some people like using kicks because they can strike and keep themselves at a fairly safe distance from their opponent.

Yeap, I've got all of the episodes.

Video games
TheDevilAside replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
the Dead or Alive series hands down. Easy controls. Fun gameplay. Sweet choreography. And most importantly, very very very nice.... visuals Edit: "the Dear or Alice series" ..wow, bad typo. -
If I were you, I'd just download a program called Open Office. It's "open source" (part of the whole 'Linux revolution'), free, compatiable with Windows, and is just as good, if not better, than Microsoft Office. Also, I'm pretty sure it's cross-compatiable with Microsoft Word, so you shouldn't have problems with transfering the text files between the two programs. Here's a link: http://www.openoffice.org/

Your Chance for Immortality
TheDevilAside replied to Writer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Why is she a SWAT operative? From your description your character seems to be pretty incredible in just about every aspect. So why would she join a SWAT team? In comparison to the scale of your character, the SWAT Team seems to be a bit low for her (no disrespect to any SWAT officers), she seems to be 'overqualified'. SWAT Teams are a "paramilitary" unit, which means they aren't part of the US Military, but 'paralells' can be drawn, like the name suggests. For instance, they're heavily armed with assault rifles and other sorts of weaponry that are meant to do a lot of damage. However, they are not military. This means that they only operate in secured locations (unlike the military). This means that SWAT Teams are NEVER called in BEFORE police arrives. The Police always arrive first to analyze the situation and secure the location. If the situation calls for a more severe use of force and tactical precision (if there were hostages involved, for instance) then a SWAT team is called in. So, from that you gather that they have very strict rules and codes they abide. Yes... there's a point to all of this, just hold on... Your character, as you said, "delivers final justice without trials, and it bothers her." You didn't elaborate much, but that kind of sounds to me like she's ruthless. If that's not what you meant, disregard both of these paragraphs. A SWAT team really can't afford to have ruthless, vengeful team members because all of their operations will be and are covered by the News and observed by the public. So... that means no heorics, no killing out of veangence or any other reasons except for that the target posed an immediate, deadly threat. I would think that limits your character by a lot. Also, from your description again, she sounds like kind of a "lone wolf" type of bad * heroine. But SWAT teams act strictly as a team. A pretty popular quote in the military is, "There's 'I' in 'Team'!" And, again, your character is "the best we've got to offer." So, why a SWAT team? One member will maybe encounter a situation where there's dangerous, trained hostiles once in a lifetime. And even then, it probably won't be anything like in the movie SWAT with Colin Farrel. Usually they deal with drug busts (storming into meth labs, etc.), gangs (and some angry punk with a pistol isn't much of a match for a trained officer with a kevlar vest, helmet and M4 Carbine), and things like that. And the LAPD SWAT (which is where SWAT originated from, Los Angeles) has a very good track record, rarely does blood-shed occur. And these teams usually comprise of ex-SEALs, retired Marines, and police officers with good credentials. So, SWAT Teams are really, really, really, really good, but they're not "the best we've got to offer." If I were part of a government body in charge of recruiting people like her... I think I would make her an assassin for the CIA or some secret agency with unlimited funds that "doesn't exist". Hehe. By the way... this chick sounds pretty cool. She got a name? Can I get her number? Or could you at least name the computer geek Gabe? ...So I can.. you know.. read about myself getting a girl like that? -
Your Chance for Immortality
TheDevilAside replied to Writer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Why not have her fighting ability come from some elite military training program? Like Jason Bourne, the character in the Bourne series by Robert Ludlum (sweet movies, too ). Or kind of like that movie Equilibrium. I don't know, "Dragon-Scale Kung Fu Blackbelt" (heh, or something) and "Special Weapons and Tactics operative" just doesn't mix too well, in my opinion. As for naming rank, I would leave that out. Most of the time rank is as diverse as the martial art itself. A purple belt means very little in one, and the world in another. I would have the file say something like "She trained extensively and excelled in X forms of combat." -
Do your friends get involved?
TheDevilAside replied to dancin_ash's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have friends that would jump in immediately and friends who would probably run the opposite direction and try to get help. I hang around a lot of different types of people, and frankly, it'd be better for some of them to not get directly involved. ...I hope I don't have any friends that would just walk away and say "it wasn't my problem." -
Hm, those are hard. I'll stick with just one clap for now.
-
lol, they might be a little bit too much. If it's gotta be deleted, go ahead. ...I thought it was funny, anyway :/

Christianity and the whole "ki" issue
TheDevilAside replied to nathanjusko's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
lol.. That's a good one, I need to remember that. Anyway.. I don't have a problem with 'meditating' (in this context). But I don't consider it to be something such as... connecting with external (internal?) supernatural forces, or becoming 'one' with the universe. I see it more as a means of simply calming down and focusing. I know each of us have a different perception of what meditation really is or does, and I think depending on your religious beliefs (or lack thereof) it varies. That brings me to my next point... Be very careful. Finding the Christian equivalent to things isn't always a good idea. Take Christmas, for instance: December 25 isn't Jesus Christ's birthdate. Long before Christianity even existed, it was a Northern Europe Pagan holiday known as Yule, which is dedicated to Winter Solstice or Saturnalia, the Roman worship of Saturn, the god of agriculture. It was also a holiday in Ancient Babylon which was called 'the Feast of Isis', the goddess of nature. In 350, a Pope Julius officially declared that Jesus Christ's birthday was to be celebrated on December 25, in order to allow of "easy conversion" of Roman Pagans. He kept all of the major traditions, such as the tree (pagan) the giving of gifts (pagan - although that worked out quite nicely, considering Christ also received gifts from the three wise men) and the mistletoe. Eventually, this caught on everywhere and after a few hundred years, people were no longer aware of its Pagan roots and believed everything, even the tree, to have Christian significance. Personally, that bothers me. Finding the Christian equivalent to things I don't believe is always a very smart thing to do, it confuses and distorts. And when it comes down to it, it's simply a compromise of your faith. Also, unfortunately just about every other Christian holiday has pagan roots, and the date and practices were also adapted by the Christian authority of the time (Catholics, mainly) in order to allow for easier conversion of the Romans, Druids, and so on. Easter (where'd the bunny rabbit come from?) St. John's day (originally the celebration of Summer Solstice) All Saints Day (And Halloween, was a Roman holiday first) The list goes on.. -
If I were 14, and a girl, I think I would be glad to have an instructor who understands and can relate. TheDevilAside replied to prajna79's topic in Introduce Yourself
Welcome to the forums I take American Kenpo, but I don't know much about Chinese Kempo. However, like Gheinisch said, you might want to post your questions in another section (the Getting Started in the Martial Arts section would be a good place to start as well, if you have any other questions) and I'm sure you'll get the answers you need. -

Welcome to the forums, buddy. This is a great place, especially if you're new to the whole martial arts scene. Feel free to start a thread about any question you might have.

Some exercises are meant to be 'explosive' and some really aren't. Please don't do Good Mornings quickly, and I would reccomend bench pressing at a moderate speed, no matter what weight you've got on there.

There's around 10 techniques for yellow belt, which is where a lot of AK school start out at. I remember my instructors saying that they added the "introductory belt" because some people were too challenged with the yellow belt techniqes and they became frusturated and just quit. You know, some people just want to see a sign of achievement quickly, and they couldn't stand being the same belt for 3-6 months.

do you need to diet while doing martial arts?
TheDevilAside replied to ang_soo_do_guy's topic in Health and Fitness
That is a great post, Shorin. I've noticed the exact same thing. I cut out pop/soda (Coke, basically) signficantly and replaced it with water (smart, huh?) and the great thing is I haven't really craved good ol' coca cola at all, now I actually prefer water over Coca Cola because now drinking it almost makes me kind of sick. It's waayy too sweet for me. Didn't used to be, but it is now. Same goes for fast-food. Also, I'd reccomend flipping your lunch with your dinner. Eat a larger, more nutritious lunch and a smaller dinner. -
what tricks can YOU do?
TheDevilAside replied to The_Devil_In_Disguise's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Tricks.... I can like.... Hm..... Let's see.... ....uh.... I don't gotta prove nothin' to nobody! I'm a sempai! No seriously, I can't do any of that stuff. I can do a kip-up if I'm lucky. That's about it. Oh, and I can kick and do a 360 jump... but not at the same time! -
Things aren't 100% the democratic way, because we aren't a 100% democracy. We're more of a 'representational democracy' or democratic republic. If we were a complete democracy, we would vote on Everything, but instead we elect people who we trust will represent our opinion and vote accordingly, for the most part. Vote anyway. Your vote will help your candiate win the electoral points and the popular vote. That way, if your candidate wins (or won..) both, the other side won't have as much of an excuse to dispute the results and sue. I think that's really annoying. Yeah, plus you can complain all you want and justify it. And who doesn't enjoy complaining? Speaking of... my cable connection sucks so bad!
