Evaluating Martial Arts Programs
TheDevilAside replied to Phanixis's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I knew that sounded fimiliar! I remember that someone posted a topic a long time ago about this "martial art" and the grandmaster. Equaninimus is right, it really is a cult and "Iron" Kim Style is a fraud. I suggest, like all others have, that you leave this school immediately. Even despite all of this, such a price is outrageous, especially since they're making it a long-term contract. I've heard of "mcdojos" ripping people off by roping them into expensive, long term commitments, but I've never heard of anything that severe. -
I'm with Rich on this one. But I suppose it's a personal preference, it all depends on your goals.
-
If you don't mind me asking, why exactly do you want to gain strength but not gain muscle mass?
-
Hey there, enjoy your time here.
-
(this will probably be moved to the health + fitness section) To get a body like a bodybuilder is pretty much impossible unless you not only lift weights in a certain manner, but follow a strict diet as well. So, don't worry about looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger just from doing a couple of pushups every evening. Now, I'm sorry, but I don't believe that there's any way of building your strength without having your muscles get bigger. I'm not really sure what you're looking for, but I am relatively strong for my age and size, but I don't look like the increduble hulk. If you want to just look "fit" instead of "strong", then I suggest you do a lot of swimming, running or jump roping, and maybe do a few pushups every now and then, or if you want to, lift light-weight dumbbells (maybe start with a 20-40 lbs set).

I'm sure that if the instructor is aware of the students' learning disability, he would understand.

Like Delta1 said, fighting like a maniac doesn't give you a lot of power, plus it will get you off of balance easily. The one thing that does make it hard to defend against though, is that it's scary. It's a very tempting offer to run screaming or go into fetal position when someone's charging at you with their fists swinging all over the place as if they're on PCP. That's how I always won fights when I was a little kid, because the person I was attacking would either run away or just curl up into a little ball and wait for me to get it over with. But once you get used to fighting, and aren't afraid of taking hits, then all you have to do is come in with some controlled contact, try to get him off balance and he'll pretty much be yours. Or, just side step and laugh as he trips over himself.

racism in the martial arts
TheDevilAside replied to blaze78_9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've never noticed any racism for the short time period that I've been involved in the martial arts. If anything, I've noticed that the enveironment where I train is the most respectful and friendly place I've ever encountered. -
yeah, I can't really tell you much unless you tell us if you're using dumbbells (55lbs on each arm) or a barbell. I'm assuming you're doing barbells.. because, man, you need to be pretty strong to do 10x4 curls with a 55 dumbbell on each hand.. and you said you weigh around 130 lbs? =-0

hey wait! I AM an orange belt! Cool!! I didn't even realize.. all the more reason to stick to this crappy screen name.
-
I have no idea what my screen name means :/ I was an idiot back when I made this screen name and I figured having a screen name with the word "devil" in it would be cool... eh, whatever. Now I don't want to change it because I'm almost an orange belt

How to train yourself for taking the hits to the shins?
TheDevilAside replied to Dijita's topic in Health and Fitness
That actually does work, but I'd say the best way to 'condition' yourself for pain is to just learn how to ignore it. Try this, whenever you get hurt, if you cut your thumb, you fall and scrape open your knee (I miss those injuries, that hasn't happened to me since I was 10) or whatever, try just ignoring the pain, almost as if nothing had happened. Eventually, you will have conditioned yourself mentally instead of just physically, and you still feel the pain, but you will be able to remain focused. Keep on practicing in your dojo, after about a year, you'll become accostumed to taking hits almost anywhere. (I say almost because I still can't take hits to the groin and I don't really think any male here wants to 'condition' that area with an escrima stick or broom.) ...yeap, that's 100% true. Sorry, I know that question isn't directed at me, but I might as well answer it if I can, right? Escrima is a filippino martial art. Escrima sticks are 2 ft. long, wooden (apx. a little less than 2 ft.) sticks that escrima practicioners use as their weapon. That's a pretty simple description. -
Poll: How frequently do you stretch?
TheDevilAside replied to OrenJuMok's topic in Health and Fitness
I hate stretching, especially because I can barely touch my toes. But I still try to stretch atleast every other day. -
An Idea for a Grading System
TheDevilAside replied to Tal's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I wish people would just be more honest with themselves when they join a martial art. Or the instructors would be more honest, for that matter. -
lol! Close, I was in PE and we were playing street hockey. The puck was in the air, and this idiot decides he's going to hit it while it's in the air. So, he swung as hard as he could and hit the side of my face instead of the puck.
-
...this stuff looks complicated :/ I'll stick to the neanderthal method of lifting heavy objects repetitively, hehe.

I've been lifting free weights for a little over half of a year now, and my muscle mass and strength has increased significantly. But, one of the things I've noticed, is that I don't seem to feel as much pain. I used to skateboard a lot when I was younger, so I was used to feeling pain, and I could ignore it and move on.. but that didn't mean that it didn't hurt. But now, a couple of times, I've noticed that when I get hit or something, I feel much less pain than I used to. I've noticed this a couple of times, one time someone hit me in the head as hard as he could with a hockey stick. Other times, uncoordinated and wreckless students at my dojo have accidently elbowed me, punched me and kicked me with quite a bit of force to my face, ribs and ribs again. But, I didn't really feel any pain :/ I mean, I could feel the impact... but it didn't hurt as badly as I thought it would. Is this because of weight lifting or am I just a lunatic?

You are worth exactly: $2,252,344.00 *Can't touch dis plays*

Heh, I do bo techniques with rakes all the time when I'm outside helping my dad in the garden. People look at me weird though, when they see a 6'1" 16 year old fighting off garden gnomes with a rake.

I wonder what he was trying to say.. "and a nice thing about these practice katana's..." is that they're very durable? Yeap. Serves them right for selling a cheap product like that. If they were display swords, I could understand, but if they're *practice* katana's, you'd think they wouldn't snap in half that easily.
-
I used to have my own style when I was around 10 and 13 years old. Seriously, me and my friend made up a whole array of different techniques and practiced them on each other. It was fun. But our little martial art sucked beyond belief, half of the techniques involved backlfips, running along side walls and shooting fire out of our hands. But, heh, it was fun. I suggest you join a martial arts school, any martial art that seems to attract you. Then become proficient in it, and start making it your own. You know, everyone in the United States can speak English (err.. atleast it used to be that way) but we all have different accents and ways of pronouncing words that give it our own "style". Man.. I'm not sure how much of what I said made sense :/ but, I hope you get the general idea.

How about a Filippino martial art? Maybe modern Arnis/Arnis De Mano? (Boy, did I spell that right?) Pretty much all martial arts will risk finger injury, but I took about a month of Arnis (didn't like it :/) and I didn't really notice much that could hurt your fingers. Then again, I only took it for a month, I could be completely wrong.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're talking about handwraps, etc. You can get them at karatedepot.com or any store that sells weight training/boxing equiptment... and, hey, I got my handwraps at Wal*Mart, just look wherever you see punching bags and gloves.
