Longevity
Thuggish replied to cross's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
i imagine id be able to... but i dont know if i still will be. so long as i dont have any major injuries that bother me forever im sure ill be able to- the shape im in now, all young and stuff, im not about to give up. i may slow down a little (im sure i will when im fify, sheez...) but ill still kick someones * if they mess with me, hehehe. i think ill have to be careful with my joings at that age, as well as train less time-wise, and not hit things so hard or push myself so hard so to not mess up my bones. also, i dont think contact sparring would be in my best interest. who knows though, some of the top boxers are around their forties, and still beatin everyone down professionally. -
all contact sports have the element of danger to them, like football and hockey, even basketball- people get injured all the time. kickboxing is no different, but id dare to say injuries (of serious kind) arent really common. you might pull something etc, but youre not going to get paralyzed, know what i mean? broken bones are always a possibility, but most people i know havent had that happen. there will however be wear and tear on your body. thing is, really, youre gonna feel a lotta pain from time to time- ever been kicked in the head? also, tring, learn how to speak in single coherent sentences for us, well respond better to your questions.

Which MA for fighting in groups?
Thuggish replied to Treebranch's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
sounds kind of like war in ancient times on a battle field. if it wound up anything like that (though probably weaponless...) itd end up being kind of random. for instance, watching gladiator in the beginning sequence i realized that no matter how good a soldier may have been, some other guy running by could kill you and youd never see it coming cause you were fighting someone else. anyway, yea... i think they should start something like that. -
oh ive done traditional martial arts, as have several of my friends... styles ranging from judo to tkd and karate to kung fu... and they just dont compare to what type of conditioning boxers and wrestlers and such combatants do. have you ever done modern martial arts?

At home MT preparation
Thuggish replied to WhiteBelt's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
for now id just make sure i had the endurance by running a good deal every day. also, just do a good amount of bagwork to get your punching and kicking skills back. -
you want some physically demanding stuff, do MMA, BJJ, boxing, muay thai or kickboxing, things like that. not to burn everyone else, but people in karate classes doing katas arent going to push their bodies like people sparring and hitting heavy bags for the same amount of time, or doing drills like those people do.

Jump roping = weak? correct me plz
Thuggish replied to YoungGrasshopper's topic in Health and Fitness
jumping rope is the one cardio exercise that actually burns more calories than jogging. must use a lot of energy, dont you think? why dont you try doing it for 20 or 30 minutes and see how you feel? also- its an exercise most every boxer (professionals i mean) do regularly. that ought to convince you theres something to it. -
upper and lower back strength is as important as every other muscle. actually, lower back strength is probably more important.

i have a bag that is packed full of cut up denim (sp?). its quite heavy and very hard (had to get thicker gloves to pound on it).

When & Why To Fight or Surrender?
Thuggish replied to bigpopparob2000's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
yea... i wasnt talking about something so complex. i was merely responding to these people who say, if a gun is pulled on you assume hes gonna shoot you and fight! thats no way to be thinking unless you really do wanna be shot- cause you will, and probably unnecessarily. -
When & Why To Fight or Surrender?
Thuggish replied to bigpopparob2000's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
nooooo no no no. most people who point a gun at you arent going to use it unless you give them reason. many wouldnt even use it if you refused to give them your wallet (not that id take the chance.) but why why why would you think to yourself- gee, he has a gun, hes gonna use it i better fight him? believe me- hes a lot more likely to use it if you come at him rather than give him your wallet. thinking that hes gonna shoot you so you have to do something will be a self fullfilling prophecy- cause youll get your @#$ shot. compliance is the best course of action. as far as the female is concerned, thats up to you and the situation. if you think she can escape maybe youll take some damage for her. if shes freaking out and you know she wont run, dont waste your own well being by getting shot so he can take her anyway. if youre 99% sure you can get the gun (no such thing as 100) go for it, if youre not, dont get more people shot than have to be. be smart- living people can still help, dead people cant- and if you attack him, assume hell shoot you. personally though, id tell the woman to run as soon as i saw the gun and give my wallet up. also, since no one brought it up, you can always try to talk your way out of a situation, who knows maybe youll improve it just that much. remember guys, guns beat everything except bombs and missiles, and you dont wanna get shot. go with the odds and obey. -
even if someone is a master and kicking someones head off, such a high kick puts you in an unbalanced disadvantageous situation. if you miss, or dont finish him, or whatever, bad things can happen. and let me tell you, a grappler who has a foot flying at his head will duck it and then take the guy down, and out. come to think of it, all kicks put you at somewhat of a disadvantage in some ways- guess the power and range is a tradeoff for the vulnerability.

Striking Vs. Grappling
Thuggish replied to cross's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
studying both, id prefer striking to grappling just because i can hit someone (love doing that) hurt then enough to end the fight, and its a little 'cleaner' if you will. however, if i had to choose just one to rely on in a streetfight, id say grappling. ground fighting is the last step in a fight- you dont see people taking it to the ground then getting back up. ive seen teachers at mma schools beaten by their students because the student could grapple and the teacher couldnt (he was a DAMN good striker). far as cross is concerned, i think, at least for me, that grappling puts you in more control because you control where your opponents body goes, and injur him accordingly. on feet both people move, but when i throw you to the ground im goin in for the kill. -
+'s and -'s of Hapkido
Thuggish replied to Arys's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
don't know much about the art- also depends on your teacher and all that... but if there is no ground fighting techniques that is one significant minus. -
i always like to think about certain simple things to do in a street fight. things like.. punch them in the throat, take out their knee, maybe punch the bridge of the nose. its the first thing that comes to mind now. think easy targets that will essentially end the fight right there for you. the rest is just instinct. most important, though- be prepared to get the hell out of there either before or right after the * goes down... idiots have friends, and i dont care to meet them all.

Conditioning
Thuggish replied to Sho-ju's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
assuming your legs are strong hard muscle... well- taking kicks will condition you to take kicks. im sure jogging cant hurt. -
i think weve all forgotten the point of this post. the question was what are the kicks that are effective on the street. presumably, these are the ones youd practice and get good at so to be ready for that street situation. that is why we answere which types would work, and which wouldnt. the thing really had nothing to do with our psychological mindsets- someone start a post about that. the question is which kicks will actually work on the street- i answered, a few others did... anyone else want to just answer the question?

god you people... being cut is not just 'about body fat % period,' theres more to it. no ones saying you can be cut if youre really fat, thats obvious. but if you do lots of cardio and have 4% bodyfat YOU ARE NOT GARUNTEED TO BE CUT. cut as just as much to do with what the muscles look like. take the lines between them- for instance where the bicep end and the tricep begins. on some people you can see them without flexing, clearly. infact, you could even see all three parts of the tricep. on other people, their arm may be big, but even when flexed you can hardly tell where the muscle is- where exaclty the lines are and all that. the former is cut, the latter is not. both these cases can happen to people who have no extra fat on their arms.

not quite, wolverinewhatever. if you want to bulk up, you have to do higher weight at lower reps, keeping up the intensity of course. for definition, more reps are necessary. and yes- doing a lot of reps will tone your muscles, giving them better overall shape, more defining stridations and all that. while it is true that without enough cardio to keep the fat off, you wont be able to tell- doing high reps (and the right exercises and all that) will get your muscles more cut.

Is JKD too complicated?
Thuggish replied to cymry's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
okay, i think we can all agee that sano is an idiot. yes this is a 'burn' post- on sano. because hes an idiot. hey sano, shut up. idiot. anyway, jkd is not a style. am i going to fast? its a concept, a philosophy. the only reason bruce lee even gave it that name is because everyone just wouldnt shut up untill he named it (kind of like sano!) jkd is just a concept of fighting freely- without any one style in mind. fighting involves punching, kicking, tackeling, joint locks, yada yada yada. jkd is nothing more than bruce lees concept of fighting without any limitations- doing whatever works. technically- anyone who trains in martial arts and doesnt limit themselves to say, rules of the ring, a tournament, or whatever- simply trains to be a better fighter, follows the concepts of jkd. so to reiterate- jkd is not a style, and one cant compare jkd to some other style. also, sano, shut up. idiot. -
ohhh. yea, ignore that profile, its old and im too lazy to change it. i have some stand up grappling skill, but i still prefer a takedown, maybe a hold that results in a break or a takedown where im still standing (throw i guess youd call it.) that is, if i cant just knock him down with striking. rich is right though, in most situations its best to get the hell out of there- idiots who start * usually have friends near by.

pushups with your hands on a chair each, and your feet on another chair, so that your body can dip down (a little beneath the chairs) lower than where it would go if you were on the ground (the ground getting in the way and all) theyre not recommended for the newbie, but if youve been exercising try those out.
-
both are important for their own reasons. dont neglect any muscle in your body.
