https://www.kickboxing.com (sponsor of this site) has a decent list to the left of here. https://www.mastyles.com (i think thats the right name) has a good list too. read up, then go do muay thai, mwaha. -
you can do them with dumbells instead of a barbell- just lift them to just about meet at the top so theres barely a curve in the movement. i like those.

keep doin your exercises and dont sweat it.

no. your lungs do not heal themselves- the damage smoking has done to them (the little tiny air sacs that there are thousands of that actually collect the oxygen to put into your blood that have burst from smoking) do not grow back. theyre gone. i dont know about feeling recovered or anything like that, but your lung capacity can never be what it could have been after smoking. it is possible for some to (after stopping smoking) get their cardiovascular system into good enough shape that it seems better than before you even started smoking, eventually. but the damage done is done and nothing can change that.

i meant professional fighting career, as in, kicking the shit out of each other in the ring. personally id rather study muay thai than TKD, i just plan on avoiding kicking the shit out of someone while they do the same; i.e. no full contact/no gear/professional fighting for me. i like my body in working order

How far are movies from????
Thuggish replied to yireses's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
the most realistic movie ive ever seen- for the most part- was kickboxer with jean claude van damme (you have to ignore the horrible shots with the guy jsut standing there and getting kicked, of course.) also, the action sequences in the bourne identity- the firts two ones where he tears into the cops, could actually work; assuming of course everyone was positioned right where they were. watch it in slow mo, its quite brilliant i think. thats about it- although the count of monte cristo comes to mind; it seemed pretty real, but i dont know much about fencing. oh! old kurasawa films werent too bad, like seven samurai. -
everyone can have visible abs but some have to work harder than others, naturally. if you cant see them but theyre there and you can feel them, you either need to shed a little fat in the mid section, or build them a little more- which could mean either more situps/crunches without weights OR more of them with weights, it depends on why theyre not visible... either theyre very strong/dense and not very big (more with weights), or theyre big but not at all cut (many hundreds of reps). does that make sense?

yea kidna- the idea behind a tkd of kung fu snap kick is to connect for as little time as possible, same principal behind a wet towel snapping actually, and cause a lot of damage that way. thing is, its either one of those, or a thai boxer with huge muscular legs who is also incredibly fast whos kick is designed to hit as hard as possible. and other than hard kicks, whoever asked, all of muay thai is based upon maximum damage. the knees, the elbows, all that isnt for points- its for destroying your opponent's body before he destroys yours. i read somewhere, and wouldnt be surprised, that the average career of a muay thai fighter (the hard core guys in thai land) is five years because after that your body is finished.

two cops, one angry dude
Thuggish replied to Thuggish's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
first time offender- with the reputation of a really good kid among his teachers and fellow church-goers. -
basically, muay thai is known for the hardest kicks in the world. the way they kick and train for the kicks and condition for the kicks makes them kick you as if they were swinging a baseball bat. then there's the rest of the brutal tecnhiques they use- elbows and so on. i mean, except for the no punch face and no kick below belt rule, tkd is close to kickboxing- but it just doesnt compare.

two cops, one angry dude
Thuggish replied to Thuggish's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
yea... definitely stupid id have to agree. but still good enough at MA's to do that to two people who are trained in ways of taking people down. i dunno, when you hear a story like that it just makes you take a second thought about how good you think you are compared to some shmoe on the street. oh, and if youre curious, the kid did get off easy because he was a great student, and a mormon believe it or not, so they marched in all these character witnesses or something like that and they apparently got a really lenient judge. lucky him. -
little story i heard from a reliable source, rest assured, about a guy who was in no mood to be harassed by two cops in cali (they were, however, within their rights in doing what they did.) hes riding his bike to the gym and the two cops go to stop him, kid figures man i didnt do nothin leave me alone im not cooperatin at all. cops wont have it, one goes to grab him so the kid- trained in jiujitsu and kickboxing (and was wearing no shirt, but harley boots with the steel plate in the bottom) grabs the cops arm and twists it around- thumb grab kinda thing- and kicks the other cop side-kick style with his harley boots on. ended up four cops had to take him down. the kid was lucky enough to eventually get away with it on account of bein a good kid every other day of his life... and im not condoning the act, but its kind of a funny story when a judge more or less laughs at the cops. anyway, it just goes to show you never know who knows how to do what- this kid really wasnt that big a guy or anything... just good.

uh, thats not exactly where todays kickboxing came from anyway, boxing is effective because it does one thing more than anything else- it teaches you to punch. street fights involve mostly those and wrestling like stuff, so if you can punch like a boxer you can cause some damage- hopefully not to your own fist. either way, its good for fighting if youre a strong person. ever seen a serious boxer outside of the ring go nuts? i hope i never do from a first person perspective....

Punches to a big tough guy?
Thuggish replied to sansoouser's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
heres the thing- a good strike to the groin, the knees, the throat (if you can reach it on lewis) the temple or any vital point is going to hurt- possibly severely injur a huge boxer just like anyone else, maybe more so if they weigh a whole lot. but- the odds of you doing that before they seriously mess you up are quite slim unless youre damn good- even then, a big guy with not fighting experience, just 300lbs of muscle, has a tremendous edge in messing you up anyway. SOL indeed.... -
there are hundreds of pressure points in the body, and most of them, when propoerly stimulted, can make someone drop to their knees- cause that sh!t hurts. if there was a touch that actually killed someone though, they were palming a tiny poison needle or something.

much like weight lifting at home vs at a gym, when you actually go somewhere its like putting out a commitment- ive taken the time to drive to the gym, ima make sure to work out good; as opposed to i have a home gym, but look another episode of law and order is on.... also, in martial arts, unless you have another MAist around who knows what theyre doing, you might be making mistakes. but of course, the more practice you get, the better. but remember- practice doesnt make perfect. good practice makes perfect.
-
of course not, nor would i use the sais like neo on the matrix. but anyway, i personally like the sais better- theyre good for weapon vs weapon, and weapon vs no weapon (what weapon isnt?). and yea, you can throw them if you practice enough- and pcam16 the nature of physics would make a spin in air if you threw it, the heavier side wouldnt just take over and be in front. the trick is to get good enough so to make the point it at whatever distance youre throwing (althoug the handle will hurt plenty). like tomohawks, i htink you aim for a complete rotation every 15 feet or something? i dunno, who does exactly?

reason?
Thuggish replied to sansoouser's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
first its fun... also, though, i like the fact that i can kick someones as-s. i dont have any intention of doing so, in fact id rather not, but if the sh!t hits the fan i can (hopefully) handle myself in a bad situation. growin up as a skinny guy, its nice to be bigger now and have the confidence of knowing if someone messes with you you can do somethign about it. -
yes. or, like i prefer, do crunches, where you curl up your stomache and your lower back never leaves the ground. easier on lower back, and burns abs like crazy. also do leg lifts; you cant neglect those lower abs!!! eventually you can use small weights on your chest, but not for a while- you ought to do a couple hundred a day if you really want those abs, and it does take a little while so be patient. abs need many many repitions so do as many as you can, then rest, and repeat as necessary and try to do a few hundred of both leglifts and crunches/situps. have fun.

charging
Thuggish replied to jushin's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
depends on what they leave open and what theyre trying to do, but just about any straight attack will do in the right situation. front push kick, front snap kick (to groin if street fight), a knee if theyre coming in low like a wrestler, or step in with an elbow to the face if coming in high... even a jab could work. also, you can dodge it, maybe throwing off their momentum or balance or just position. -
haha- forget muay thai sparring, take him on in a real fight and youll see. it has only strikes, which is limited if you also want to do grappling and joint stuff... but as a striking art it hits harder and hurts more than just about anything else. ask a MT fighter to kick you in the leg, not even full force, youll understand. when you sparred the guy maybe it didnt seem effective, but if you fought the guy im sure you would think different.

is kung fu effective?
Thuggish replied to aznkarateboi's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
i studied shaolin kung fu for a short amount of time, and from my own experiences and the other more advanced students, it seems to take at least a year and a half before one would even have a chance of using it in a street fight effectively- probably more. after 5-10 years they seem to get pretty good. my instructor had done other martial arts, but had done shaolin kungfu for ten years, and hes a guy i wouldnt go up against for sure.... however, in the first couple of months under my own instruction i did learn a lot of things that could be useful, for instance 30 holds involving joint manipluation (called chin na's), and how to get out of them- so it does have a few benifits that are almost immediate. still, its a style that takes a long time to learn to use because it hasnt changed all that much since the old shaolin monks learned it- compared to other styles at least. -
SAN SOO!?!?!?
Thuggish replied to sansoouser's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
hahaha, thats funny. really though, how would one describe the style of san soo? (like tkd is much flashy high kicks, muay thai is kickboxing with knees and elbows and super powerful kicks, BJJ is grappling that takes it to the ground a lot, etc etc)
