which one?
Thuggish replied to ShadowGoomba's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
screw those other ones, do mma! -
i dont know if this topic belongs here, in the boxing section, or in the health/training section; but im putting it here because i always hear it said in this forum that boxers train with gloves and dont know how to punch correctly without them. ive never had this problem, but apparently some people do. anyway, i recently got those gloves not unlike the ufc fighters use- the small bag gloves that have individual finger slots and holes at the ends. that glove feels a lot more like a natural fist to me- as it keeps the normal shape of the hand, and i think if one used those instead of those big bulky boxing gloves, one would be more prepared to throw a punch without any gloves on. anyone else have this experience, any thoughts, etc? personally id recommend them for anyone with a heavy bag who wants to prepare for something other than ring fighting.

on the street the good ol one-two is very effective. most people cant block a hard punch to the face without gloves on or anything, so just hit the bastard. if youre outnumbered though, forget it and just run.

ow... i wanna be able to do that... but im curious- why do you want to do a 180 degree kick?
-
id say strength and power- theyre pretty hand in hand.

weights, though i prefer a gym where they have more stuff than you could possibly fit in your place. its not necessarily impossible to get a bag in an appartment though.. -
im gonna be the oddball here and get back on subject.... while endurance is certainly a good thing, and cardio fitness is the best thing for your body... in a fight its all about brute strength. sure in the ring you need to last... on the street a fight is decided in 30 seconds. just about anyone can last that long, you need some explosive power to take your opponent out before youre taken out.

tips on mind conditioning

okay, maybe i took my rant a little too far, i didnt mean love your enemy and all that, and i didnt mean you should lose your head completely. but perception is nothing more than instinct, things happen to quick in a fight to think about. "calmness and no emotion" is impossible in a twenty second fight (which is how long a street fight oughta last.) -
yea its better to start too slow than too fast in any sort of weight training. your joints should never be sore after a workout. slow down, and as for you muscles- soreness is okay... but if its ever so sore that it interferes with what youre doing in your normal day-to-day stuff (meaning you can feel it just moving around, basically) youre pushing your muscles too hard and it will catch up with you. also, at 250, you should concentrate most on cardio and losing all that extra weight.

im gonna go ahead and make everyone mad at me again- because this keep a "cool head when you get punched in the face" crap is not realistic. at all. fighting is violent, and violence comes from anger, not love or understanding. you cant be some zen master like in the movies and vanquish your enemy all the while experiencing no emotions. you dont have time to contimplate nature or the world when youre in a fight. why waste your time trying to be something other than human? human is what you are. if you find yourself in a fight, get pissed off, kick his *, and kick it hard enough to make him think twice about fuckin with you again. sevenstar is right- full contact training is what you need. experience is what you really need... because you dont even have time to think (much less meditate like you zero state people) you just react. instinct. practice practice practice builds instinct. and a little rage never hurts. im not going to be presumptuous so ill just ask- how many of you have been in a real fight or really been assaulted? -

hooray for bjj! hooray for wrestling! hooray for asskicking! -
rule number one of bar fights (streetfights too) is that the bigger guy wins. (rule two is anything can happen, but thats not relevant.) power is what makes punches hurt, for those of you saying power is not as useful as speed or only for grappling or whatever. my favorate example: oscar de la hoya is faster, more accurate, and surely more skilled than tyson... but who do you think wins the brawl?

what, white belt? muscles are important in anything involving fighting.

pushups are only useful in building mass when youre about to start a weight lifting routine. once you get into it a bit, forget them and hit the weights.

BJJShotose wrote: BJJShotose, im gonna have to disagree here. when it comes to a confrontation on the street, if some guys going to try to punch you in the face, you shouldnt do the bare minimum to stop him, you should garuntee you stop him. why risk doing any less than everything you can? in other words, if its me and some guys throwing a punch, theres no way in hell im going to stop with dodging/blocking/whatever and punching him. theres no way im going to stop at knocking him down even. (unless he has friends who are closing in). me, im going to kick and stomp him on the ground, break his arm, or somehow else disable him from doing a damn thing to me- and then get the hell out of there. if someone else enters into a street fight with you, you have every right to hospitalize the *; and if you ask me, it would be unwise to do less. thats not to say that i pick fights or want to kill someone or something, or even want to hurt people... but you dont treat the symptoms you treat the disease.

choosing a MA
Thuggish replied to GhostFighter's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
id say even with multiple opponents id rather know grappling if it had to be one of the two. someones bound to tackle your *, afterall... and once that happens youre in a whole mess of trouble. still though against multiple opponents youre pretty much screwed anyway, unless you have a serious advantage like being twice their size or something. maybe sprinting is the most ignored aspects of martial arts. -

i dont know italian guy- strictly grappling vs strictly striking on the street... id give it to the grappler. especially if its one of the two vs untrained opponents. -

lots of damage eh? id recommend some sort of hard striking art, boxing, kickboxing, muay thai.... and yea, some grappling would be great, because on the street if you can grapple, you can control a lot of things and do a lot of damage. lift some weights while youre at it- muscles are very important.
