  1. Should shotokan karateka learn kata from other styles (as it once did) and teach and use them as shotokan? (we do)
  2. It's more like 5000... It's similar to TJJ (tradition Japanese Jiu jitsu) but some school have added a lot of TKD to it. Other schools added more judo type throws.
  3. I never could use cat stance in a fight and never had a hard time with anyone who liked to use it. It's great for moving into another stance but that's about it for me. (IMO) When I'm getting pounded I like sanchin but for the most part I like a boxer's stance. Both feet pointing forward not to low or far apart. Sho
  4. Thanks Hohan.
  5. Not as much as I use to.
  6. Nice one. The fight only stops when someone is knocked down, turns there back or gives up.
  7. Sometimes mine, most of the time it belongs to others. My wife is sick of clean the blood and I have no idea how to get it out. (don't want to learn either) I think I'm going to buy a black gi, my sensei said it doesn't matter to him what I wear after shodan.
  8. Kizami tsuki jodan, yaka tsuki chudan, migi mawash geri jodan, hadari moroto ashi barri. OSU!
  9. Which do you prefer and why? I'm a shotokan karateka and wear a white gi. I'm tried of the blood, pit stains, etc. I'm thinking about buying and wearing a black gi. Your thoughts?
  10. In the street you can't call foul. This guy is just a gun-ho karateka and is doing you a favour by attacking aggressively. In the long run you’ll be better able to handle a real fight situation. Next time he goes to throw you, try one of your own, its not dirty it’s bunkai. OSU!

    Chito ryu

Chito ryu, anyone here study it?
  12. ask on sherdog.com in the grappling part of the forum.
  13. Anyone else have a link for kata online?
  14. Drop him hard next time your tori.
  15. All the kata are found on this link...enjoy. http://www.shorinryu.dk/html/download.htm
  16. An online manual with clips...it's a mix of shotokan and Okinawan karate. http://www.karate.org.yu/program.htm
  17. Train shotokan 100% of the time. Fight Kyokushin rules. That's how we mix it up.
  18. It's nice to see so much attention given to bunkai, in the school of shotokan I trained we didn't do very much bunkai. One oyo bunaki pre kata. I've had to go outside the dojo to a more traditional Okinawan club and train. I make sure my students understand what the kata is all about.
  19. We train 2x a week. Adults 2 hours a class and kids under 12 1.5 hours. We also have formal training with different dans form different clubs. This formal training is 4 hours long and cost an extra $20, we do this every other month.
  20. for karate a month? At my dojo we charge $20 a person and $10 for each additional family member...
  21. Karate and judo make for a good combo, I say go for it. That's what I did and both my karate and judo improved.
  22. No 10th dans are alive, it's a rank given to dead judoka's out of respect for O'sensei Kano. To compete you have to know Japanese all the scoring is in Japanese, how did you get by? How long did you train to reach 5th dan? I've trained with the Open Japanese Judo Champ and he was only a 3rd dan and he's trained since the time he was 6. (over 20 years)
  23. Don't forget precept 19, ""Beginners must master low stance and posture, natural body positions are for the advanced." The shotokan we see today is the work of JKA and the SKI not Funakoshi. It's based on Funakoshi's karate but taken a bit futher.
