  3. Which kata are included in Isshin Ryu? Do they all contain the vertial fist punch? What is the reason for punching this way? I've heard a couple of reasons but not sure which one is correct.

    Hyakuhachiho

I know what the site has but SKI shotokan does include all of them.

Sensei Funakoshi in his book Karate do Kyohan makes mention of this change of names: The list of original 24 kata are as follows: Chinte Chinto (Gankaku) Lorei (Meikyo) Jiin Jion Jutte (Jitte) Kururunfa Kushanku (Kanku) Matsukase (Wankan) Naihanchi (Tekki) Niseishi (Nijushiho) Ouseishi (Gojushiho) Passai (Bassai) Saifa Sanchin Sanseru Seienchin (Saipa) Seipai Seisan (Hengetsu) Shisochin Sochin Suparumpei Unsu Wanshu (Enpi) http://www.hmaainc.com/kata.html Funakoshi changed the names and shotokan people have been studying them ever since.

Check your mail, I pm'ed you.
  7. If that was directed at me, you got the wrong guy. I was looking for kata online for personal viewing...

    Saifa

No such thing as a stupid question... Saifa is a kata that means 'to smash and tear.' Nice huh!

    Saifa

P.S. I have seen other groups of shotokan return to their roots and include saifa, etc. SKI is big on this. They use saifa because the stances are easlier on the body then empi, kanku. I also know of shorin sub styles that use more naha te kata as well. IYO, do you think this is a good thing? IMO, I find it very useful and learning other kata improved my kumite overall. Mas Oyama's kyokushin includes both.

    Saifa

Shotokan is my style but have also taken Meibukan Goju Ryu and have learned both sanchin and saifa. I was looking into it as a personal study, outside of the normal shotokan syllabus.

    Hyakuhachiho

It’s my understanding that Funakoshi listed this kata and had changed the name. It’s not an original shotokan kata but in the early days shotokan was much more eclectic.
  13. Same here. We kick to the legs, head and body. We punch to the body and head when boxing gloves are worn. For the most part we wear light cloth gear, mouth guard and head gear. Sweeps are used and forward throws. OSU!

Anyone know if there is an online video?

Here's a little blurb... http://www.ozwebart.com.au/kua/kata.htm This Kata is known on Okinawa as Superinpi and the name means "one hundred and eight steps". Morio Higaonna said that the name really means 108 Masters as that is the number that it took to create it. It is also called "Petchurin".
  16. I'm looking for goju katas, Saifa for sure...any online?
  17. My shotokan sensei was from Scotland so that would make sense. Thanks. I was recently told that the kick could be used as bunkai but that would depend on the attacks head height during the wrist lock from yoi. Tekkis are the best kata...
  18. Anyone do this kata? Is the shotokan much different then the goju?
  19. Does anyone know of kata video online?
  20. I was watching a link that has Funakoshi doing tekki but he doesn't use any mai geri at all. Does anyone know when they were added and by who? Is the mai geri better then the stomp? Does it change the rest of the kata if you are adding in a front mai geri? http://www.kc-shotokan.com/kata/tekki1.htm

    Kota Kitia

Kirves, thanks for the tip. I have only seen it written the way I spelled it.
  22. Thanks Drunken Monkey. The only Wing Chun I have seen was done by Sifu Philp Redmond and his stuff is awsome.

Do you like doing makuso? Do you find it useful or helpful?
