  1. I KOed a guy in the street with suki nage. They work real well
  2. Isshin ryu is big in my area for full contact karate. They spar with head punches and all types of throws and take downs. They also have a black belt in judo and a boxing coach come in and teach...
  3. If I'm not mistaken all the Gracies have a loss now.
  4. BJJ does have a ground game, the best ground game in MMA. But don't sleep Bjj also has stand up striking as well. Bjj is jiu jitsu don't forget it's just the ground game is at it's heights right now so it's being played up.
  5. I love kyokushin but in general Okinawan kata and training makes a lot more sense to me.
  6. Shotokan karateka who have been training for many, many years have "stepped up" and got beat by jiu jitsu guys with a couple of years training. Don't take my word for it, https://www.sherdog.com in the forums section you'll find threads that have video links.
  7. I didn't see any posts saying it didn't work. What I did see were posts saying it wasn't effective in the cage. I have been doing karate for 15 years and jiu jitsu for 9 and admitt that karate isn't all it's cracked up to be, but nothing is. Shotokan was designed for a different purpose, that's all. I do firmly believe that you have to alter Shotokan kumite only a little to have a much more effective style. That is why in my dojo we train with kyokushin rules and thai rules once a week.
  8. I get along well with all the other clubs in the area so I'm able to stop in and use mat space to roll or floor space for kata. It's kinda nice having imput from people of other styles. As for the local gym, sure. I usally do weapons at the gym in a racketball court.
  9. We train 2 x a week for 2 hours. 3 x 1hour sounds better.
  10. Take a look at https://www.subfighter.com, download Genki Sudo's clip and watch how he uses the triangle to sub guys from all angles. The slickest is when he jumps a guys guard, throws on a triangle and rolls to his back. I turn to the side once it's sunk in.
  11. I think standard shotokan wouldn't do well. The wide base and the way we carry our hands is perfect for shooting in on. Besides that Shotokan has very little ground work. If a kyokushin karateka learns to sprawl they end up doing well. K-1 is a very good sport. Last one in Vegas had a karateka that basicly used a mawashi and dusted his first fighter. He got KOed in the next fight.
  12. The Japanese karateka in UFC 2 was a kyokushin off shoot, not shotokan. I'm not sure but I think the black guy that fought Ruas in UFC 7 (???) had a black belt in shotokan but he was more of a kick boxer. Hackney boxed for years before doing kempo.
  13. Welcome. What kyu is blue belt?
  14. Kata, Kihon and kumite. But most important is kata, kihon and kumite.
  15. I find no problems with sanchin or hangetsu dachi.
  16. I'm not sure how many kata Motobu did but I know he like naihanchi kata's.
  17. It's not Gojushiho it is a different kata. A home made one at that...
  18. I had a chance to roll and spar with the Combat Hapkido teacher. Subed him real quick even though he was bigger then me by 45lbs.
  19. Judo stand up does rely on the gi. Sambo has a lot of live practice. It's just like wrestling. What I did when I couldn't make it to grappling is find wrestlers to roll with. Set up mats at the local Y and post flyers. I ended up with 25 people who did some type of grappling in the past and we would roll freestyle submissions. We did it for two months and I learn alot without paying alot.
  20. You know what's really funny...I learn Shotokan from a Scottish Sensei that was once under Enoda(?) in the UK. My Japanese has a Scottish flavor.
  21. It could be it!
  22. Anyone train in it and what is the dif between it and other styles of shotokan?
  23. I have read (I think it was shotokan planet) that hangetsu is older then most sesan kata, anyone know if this is true?
  24. "Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him."
