I have done the research, thank you. We must agree to disagree religion is always a touchy topic.

As you will see Budo is directly related to Buddhism and Daoism, pls read the following: As a Christian we are not to mix religious beliefs or follow alternative paths. I take that as a personal attack on me and my faith. It sounds like you are saying I do not understand my own beliefs??? To me it sounds as if you are only seeing the superficial similarities between the two. From a Biblical bases the Christian believer is to be motivated by his/her love for God. This is the centre of his/her life. In the martial arts the underlying philosophy is to live your life in accord with the way. Sure, martial arts foster a determined effort and spiritual endurance but if that eclipses Christ in any way then you have set up an idol. I don’t want to debate Protestant theology vs. Catholic theology or dispensationism vs. covenant theology either. I was searching for the opinion of Christians who train in the martial arts. This so called post, modern fundamentalist belief you speak of is only 70 years younger then the point of view you are expressing in catholic covenant theology. Both being born out of the reformation. Sho-ju

If a skilled karateka is defending himself against a bigger unskilled person I would bet on the karateka. Growing up in and around a boxing club I have seen many smaller men out box/k.o. bigger people. I think it comes down to the individual.

1. How many here fight full contact in their dojo? 2. What style is it you study? In the shotokan dojo I teach at we do, just wondering how many here do as well.

Book review: Hapkido by Tedeschi
Sho-ju posted a topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
For anyone that has never seen the book titled, "Hapkido: Traditions*Philosoply*Technique" this is a huge book. Over 1100 pages huge. Hapkido is an eclectic martial art, meaning it includes many aspects of many different martial arts. With over 9000 photos this book is a must for anyone wanting to expand their knowledge of martial arts in general. In Shotokan we sometimes have bunkai that exists in kata that is not part of our normal training. Wristlocks, standing arm bars, throws, etc. This book helped me to refine some of the bunkai techniques that I had known existed but didn’t perform properly. I found this book to be a great buy on amazon.com and suggest it to anyone wanting a massive missive on martial training. Sho-ju -

I train and teach karate as a jitsu or fighting art. As a Christian, Christ is my way of life karate is not. Anyone else fell this way? Sho-ju

1. I found an old phone book and nail it to a tree with 4" nails. 2. I drink six packs and never do the sit ups 3. It's really very hard to "going over the top." If your resting and eating the rights foods push yourself and see just how far you can go. 4. Work your kata and kihon to have a good understanding of kumite. Kumite will help make kihon and kata real. PS. Train hard, fight hard and never say the sicking words, "I can't."

I only asked because my doctor assured me that with age and my condition I would be on a cane in my late forties. I thought it would be nice to learn an art that I could study now well I'm still 95% healthy.

I've asked TKD instructors and they don't know either...that's all.

The bounce looks funny but what's funnier is no one knows why they bounce.
-
What is the reason for the bounce in TKD forms and patterns?

At my shotokan dojo it takes a minimum of 3 and a half years. No one has ever done it in that amount of time, it took me almost 6 years. You have to be at least 16 to wear a black belt...if your that level before your 16 you simply wait.

How many here take a break in the middle of the class? I've never seen that before. -
I seen someone do a demo using the brim of his ball cap. He used it to hit under the nose and to the eyes. It sounds silly and looked even funnier.

Cane is a very interesting weapon. I hope to learn a little soon. Has anyone here heard of "Cane Masters?" https://www.canemasters.com/ What is it they teach? Are there kata?

In my club we have a shorin/shogen sensei come in to teach bunkai from the Okinawan Kata. It just makes more sense then the JKA bunkai is b.s. We do struggle with the shotokan bunkai but it just won't work in the street.

I always find the lighter guys are hard as nails. All bone and muscle. Shotokan's my background but we mix it up to kyokushin rules with throws and ground work and yes the lighter guys do very well.

Does anyone here make their own weapons? I have a buddy that makes mine for me. Nothing fancy, just heavy hard wood. He's made me arnis sticks, tongfa, jo and bo. He's working up to making a pair of kama. Anyone have tips on weapon making? Sho-ju
