  1. I had a real arnis class with a real Guro. It blow my mind. I've been doing sticks for a short time and have trained with different teachers but it wasn't until recently that I found a good teacher and now see why so many flock to learn. If you ever get a chance, try arnis.
  2. I found Rob Kaman's video's on Kazaa, but the guilt set in and I'm going to order the set.
  3. http://home.wxs.nl/~poel0383/tekko_kata.html Above is a link to a video clip. The kata we learned is only a little different.
  4. Just got my first set of tekko at a seminar on Maezato no tekko. Anyone else study this kata? It's a long one, but very powerful. OSU! PS: They look like these. http://www.msisshinryu.com/weapons/images/tekko.gif
  5. You'll love kyokushin. It's a different style for sure, but many things are similar. In my dojo we are influanced by full contact karate but stick to our shotokan syllabus. I say go for it, even if they make you wear white, it won't be for long.
  6. They are most different in kumite, a little in stance and yes, the kata are different. Both have merits.
  7. I know, I know, you can't learn from a video. I agree, but I'm looking for new ideas' for my dojo. Can anyone suggest a good title?
  8. I picked kumite. I didn't start karate to learn how to perform kata, I like them and they have a purpose but kata are a means to an end. Kumite.
  9. I've never heard that. Maybe email them, it's still listed on JKA sites and in JKA books.
  10. Just wondering what part of karate you like best...
  11. I've found Shotokan to be more aggressive then goju and shorin. I believe it has something to do with the time period (WW II) in which it's roots are found.
  12. My sensei is always saying, "Time to shut up and train."
  13. To hype yourself up and take a shot isn't a style of fighting...
  14. I will try to keep up, with you being so helpful it won't be a problem.
  15. Thank you, that was so helpful.
  16. I watched the videos on there site and they seem to be a very grappling based karate, lots of throws and wrist locks.
  17. http://www.jukokai.com/index.php Anyone belong to this group or know anything about it? OSU!
  18. We grade when a person is ready.
  19. Anyone here a Nichiren Buddhist?
  20. lol
  21. Anyone know more about Mas Oyama and his religious beliefs in Nichiren Buddhism? Did he belong to Sokka Gakki, Nichiren Shu, etc?
  22. I have to agree, shotokan has the greatest amount of students but that means it also has the greatest amount of McDojo's. In Canada and the U. S. American Kenpo has a large following...
  23. Arnis is a great tool in combat, and a short stick is more likely found in the street then say, a pair of sai.
  24. Why do you think you only spar once in a while? Do you find kata helps your sparring?
  25. I teach shotokan and we spar full contact (or about as close as you can get). We have boxing gloves and make use of them often. If your not wearing boxing gloves, you can't hit to the head with your heads. Kyokushin rules for those without gloves. It changes the way you use your shotokan basic's for sure.
