Even though you may not have a lot of posts, that doesn't mean you haven't supported the community. It is rare when a member sticks around for as long as you have. Some members just stop by when they need something, some mostly read, some post a lot, etc. But being a part of this community as long as you have and still being here today... it's a pretty important thing for this community. As time passes, I only grow more proud of what we have here and more thankful for those who have helped to make it happen - members who contribute in good faith and those who have joined me on staff, past and present. Hey unknownstyle, Opinions will vary and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think it's important to accept that. Having managed this community for 13 years, I've seen plenty of martial artists who have trouble doing so, especially in relation to other schools. For example: if someone prefers another school, they lack experience and taste. Perhaps they just like that school better than yours. Or they like the people at that school better than you. It's a bitter thing to have to accept. Your post here indicates that you are angry that this other school received recognition while yours (or another school) did not. Assuming this is a legitimate award, and not something made up, I would research how the top 3 schools are selected. I would then channel this energy into attempting to get that school recognized. For example, if it is a readers choice award, that implies that there is a specific period where readers can write into whatever publication publishes the results to vote. Contact the publication and find out when that is. Check with the rules of the competition, but there is a fair chance that they want organizations to encourage their customers to write in or vote. That would be your next step. When the time comes for the 2015 Readers Choice awards, be ready and with luck, maybe your school will be honored similarly. If it's not your school, then work with the owner of it. When someone wins an award, if you ask most people, the majority will say that someone else should have won it. If you win, the same will be true of you. Good luck. Patrick

The Browns came away looking like geniuses. Though I don't really understand why they are publicly announcing that they told him to "act like a backup." You drafted Johnny Manziel. That brings some fanfare. If you want him to change, you should have drafted someone else. I feel like he knows that he's a backup right now, but he's also a young guy who will try his best to win that job. And if you feel like you need to tell him to "act like a backup," don't tell the press about it. But that's just me. I thought the Dolphins draft was fine. We did pick players that a bunch of people felt we reached for. But we did draft to needs and to support Tannehill. I'm optimistic. Even though I think Tannehill played better last year than a lot of people give credit for (because of the awful final 2 games), this is a big year for him.

Hey Danielle, It's all about choice. A school can choose to have closed testings, but a parent does not need to accept it or delay testing. They can go elsewhere if they are made to feel uncomfortable. Just because parents may leave their children alone with other people does not mean that they wish to do so with you or with as many people as possible. For example, they may trust others more or they may be legally required to leave their children in some settings (like a classroom). They may have to leave them with a babysitter or at a daycare because they have to work. Have to. Not necessarily want to. And just because they might want their child to have a healthy extra-curricular hobby also doesn't mean they are looking for a babysitter. I think background checks are good, but I suspect that most martial arts schools do not perform background checks on every single person who may have access to their child - from employees to volunteers to a contractor working in the next room. Yours might, but I suspect most do not. And, at some point, everyone had a clean background check. If I were a school owner, I would think long and hard about just how necessary it is to keep a parent from seeing their child. It's not a decision that should be made lightly or made because you feel like it would make your job a little bit easier. Patrick

I think Danielle's advice is great. As an aside, I just wanted to point out a separate aspect of this question, which is that many parents will feel uncomfortable not being able to see their child - especially a younger child. Many parents (and rightfully so, better to be too careful than not careful enough) will simply not allow you to take their child "behind closed doors." My parents were always careful about that. You didn't indicate any ages here and the older the child is, the less this becomes an issue. But if we're talking about elementary school age kids, it's especially true. Good luck! Patrick
