exactly - the cons outweigh the pros, IMO.

Scissor Hold
SevenStar replied to sansoouser's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I wouldn't call it a new technique - merely a variation of an old one... it sounds like just a variation of hadaka jime -
regardless of size issues or sport connotation - it's very martial. It actually bears some similarities to chinese shuai chiao.

the problem with MA today is that there are still people who think like this...of course size matters. I was 5'8 150 at one point. I was slow and weak. I'm 5'9 135 now. I'm quick, strong, explosive, and MUCH more Technical http://img24.photobucket.com/albums/v71/soulfighting/SOUL%20SONIC%20STYLE/Jab1.jpg I'm 5'9 and hover around 220. Skill being equal, I would crush you. That's why they have weight classes. you were slow and weak because you were slow and weak. That's a training issue, not a size issue. http://www.geocities.com/kalistawarrior/sevenstar.jpg

Unless you're trainign for strength. I bench 280. There's no way I could do another serious set after only 90 seconds of rest.

LOL, they probably only learned to chain punch and callied it wing chun. I prefer MT over WC based on my experiences in both, but the blatant generalizations that soul is making are wrong. Also, WW is right - most CMA styles take longer to learn by design. That's why sport fighters can produce a competent fighter in a shorter amount of time. However, that doesn't mean that these styles are not effective.

It wasn't a specific "you", but all inclusive to anyone who may feel that way. It wasn't geared toward you because of your post. -
I wouldn't make a habit of fighting with my front hand down.

If the jujitsuka has the karateka and is 'about to toss him', the karateka doesn't stand much of a chance. The karateka has to win the fight before it reaches that stage. Gotcha. My bad... -

look at the last line... "once he has you and is ready to throw"... like I said, it's a timing issue. Alot of judo throws aren't gonna be countered once it in motion either. Same goes for a bjj submission. countering is all in the timing. No throw is inherently impossible to counter. -

three basics of a judo throw kazushi tskuri kake UNBALACE, fit in, execution. Judo seeks to unbalance first. the unbalance and the fit in are ideally done in what seems to be one motion. -
Striking Vs. Grappling
SevenStar replied to cross's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I don't consider trapping as grappling, as you are not clinched. I define stand up grappling as locking, throwing and clinchwork. You can transition from trapping to grappling, but I don't consider them the same. Also, WC locking, chin na, etc. will not directly translate. I've grappled with people who have tried it. If you do regular training on the ground, you can play with your mechanics and figure out the adjustments you need to make, but it won't directly transfer. -
