help chosing a martial art
King of Fighters replied to King of Fighters's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
also i think that there might be an aikido dojo. -
For about a year now i have been taking muay thai. I love it, its a great, effiective martial art. The only problem is that to go to the muay thai classes you need to pay the full price gym membership and it is very expensive, and once my contract runs up i dont think that my parents will pay for it again. I still have like 10 months on my contract, so i have lots of time to think of what other art i would do. These are the other martial arts tought im my city. there are about 5 different karate dojos, and only 1 is good from what i have heard and besides i dont really want to take karate, judo (i took it for a few months and didnt like it), a class that combines tae kwon do and hapkido, kickboxing, boxing, traditional jui jutsu, brazillian juijutsu, kobudo, tai chi and ki kong ho hup (a korean version of tai chi) . Which do you think would be best for me? Im fairly tall for my age, skinny (but not like really skinny), and i want an art similar to kung fu, wing chun, muay thai or jeet kune do. Am i too picky? anyways tell me what you think i should do.

I think that Muay thai is a pretty effictive style. Some people say that we dont learn any defence things but this is not true, at my school we learn some self defence stuff and attacks that you would use in the street, but it doesnt focus as much on that aspect as other martial arts (like kung fu or krav maga) do. As for learning muay thai, it doesnt take very long to learn how to use it effictivly. Ive been taking it for about a year and i pretty much all the attacks and how to use them, but there is stil learning how to put all of them together and timing work and stuff like that.

I saw this show on TNT and it was called the top ten, and each week, it shows the top ten in stuff (like most dangerous snakes, best martial arts, ect.). It was a pretty cool show, i dont think that tae kwon do should have been on the list and i dont think that karate deserved #2 but most of the arts still deserve their place. 10. brazilian juijutsu 9. kali/escrima (basically the same art just from different parts of indoneissa) 8. krav maga 7. tae kwon do 6. aikido 5. The MA in rank 5 wasnt a very popular art, and i think it had a long name so i dont remember it. 4. Ninjutsu 3. Muay thai 2. karate 1. kung fu

board breaking
King of Fighters replied to Shotokan_Fighter's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Personally i think that board breaking is usless. They way they hold the boards make it easier to break them and like bruce lee said " boards dont hit back". using a heavy bag is a much more effective training method. -
Hapkido?
King of Fighters replied to King of Fighters's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Also any links to videos of hapkido guys fighting (winning or losing) would be great. -
East vs West
King of Fighters replied to Ghost's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I wouldnt say that muay thai is western because it comes from thailand and is more popular there then soccer, baseball, and football put together over there. Also krav maga is also from the east. And bkj1216, 2pac aint dead man, hes hiding on his privite island laughing at us all. -
hey everybody. I was wondering what you guys could tell me about hapkido. what type of attacks it has, how it stacks up against other martial arts, how it is against muay thai, against karate, against kung fu, against ju jutsu, and what styles are similar to it. Any information you have is welcomed.

GI REVIEW
King of Fighters replied to coltmakai's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
i dont wear gi's, i used to wear them when i took judo and i hated them!!!! i think that the kung fu outfits look pretty cool but to muay thai i just wear shorts and a t-shirt. -
This is back to BkJ1216. Its kinda hard to explain but il try, you should really see the movie, its really awesome. Jet Li took 2 chopsticks, made a fist, and put 1 between his index finger and his middle figer, and one between his baby finger ( or whatever you call it) and the one beside that (which i also dont know what to call), The chopsticks stickout and looked kinda like wolverine claws. Then he punched a guy and stuck the 2 chopsticks into his neck. it was prettey damn sweet. And i like chopsticks better, there just as easy to use as a fork while eating, but they look better.

chopsticks, did you see what jet li did with them in kiss of the dragon! that was pretty cool.

What kinda music does everyone listen to??
King of Fighters replied to boogiedownbronx's topic in General Chat
I like a few different types of music but i like rap the best. -
I dont think that you have to be in competitions to be a good street fighter, but fighting in the ring certainly does help you to be a better fighter.

heres a potential situation ,
King of Fighters replied to jiu-jitsu fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I say if you have to fight, hit the biggest guy in the throat then kick him in the groin. Follow through emedently well the others are still surprised and strike the closest guy to you as hard as you can. Now it would only be 8 on 3, which would still be hard. while you are fighting, go for the vunerable areas that wil take a guy out fast (groin, neck, eyes, kidney area). Also never fall to the ground or ground fight because his freinds will surround you and kick you to death, and try to run once you get the chance. -
Sorry perrow, i dont live in england so i cant help you, but i know how you feel. I really wanted to take either wing chun kung fu or jeet kune do but i couldnt find a school that tought 1 of them in my city. So i was looking around for martial arts, i found many karate schools but i didnt want to take that because its too main stream (no offence, but i like to be different), so i came across an art called mauy thai. so i was like " muay thai, what the hell is that". So i looked into it and took a class and i loved it. It was just what i was looking for and its great for me. So the point of this message is to not get your heart set on just 1 art that you want to do, and look into other ma's. Take some classes, find out whats best for you, and dont just dismess a MA because its not the one that you want. Good luck hunting.

I think that Mt would win over boxing and kickboxing for sure. Mt just has so many more atacks and its much more effiective. Mt fighters are good boxers, actually alote of Thailand Mt fighters come to america and box in the lighter wieght devisions and become champions. and ninjamaster, do you live in kitchener, ontairo, canada? because thats where lennox louis did all of his training before he bacame world heavy wieght champion, actually my old Mt instcuctor trained at the same boxing/ mt gym as him.

should young kids do a martial art?
King of Fighters replied to kickbuttnat's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I dont think that children should start learning martial arts at a really young age. I think the earliest they schould start straining is age 7, but personally i dont think they should start until they are like 9 to 11 because at that age they wont have short attension spands and they will be able to under stand what martial arts are all about. You dont have to start young to be good though, Bruce Lee didnt start taking Wing Chun until he was 13 years old, when you think about it that is quite old compared to all the kids that start when they are like 6.
