  1. Martial Artists Art The Worst Self Defence Experts
  2. To my way of thinking is that, martial arts is no good for fighting on the streets due to not training for it realistically. As on the streets there is no belt level to try to obtain or tournament to reach for. Where on the streets there other things to consider and reach for, such as a weapon or the nearest exit; fight or flight. Street fights contain unpredictability, confusion and chaos where as in martial arts it contains order, rules and familiarity. Street fights are usually quick, intense full of anger and hate, whereas in martial arts, respect, sportsmanship behaviour is required. As there is alot of mixing martial arts exposure, as this is the fashion thing at this time, perhaps mixing with the street styles makes more sense. As in defending against hay makers and kicks to the groin, if having long hair or a beard then how to realistically work with them to use as an advantage if possible. With classes held wearing street wear apparel and not stretching out before sparring, with low lighting, objects scattered on the ground as hazards or used as improvised weapons. Training to my mind should be as close to the real thing as possible. As on the streets thugs look at martial arts as entertainment and as a hobby. With the growing popularity of MMA (ground and pound) is looking more thug like contrary to old school (pound for pound) MA. The exposure of street thug fighting methods in popular culture has surpassed out dated class room self defence martial arts. Perhaps the solution is, street thugs giving self defence classes or advise supervised by police officer, prison guards, military MP'S, well anyone who is responsible enough to intervene if the situation becomes dangerous or unsafe. Ok perhaps just thug advise BIGGESt self defence myth Bottom line... Martial artists need to learn how to be also street smart
  3. Starting with... Why martial arts doesn't work on the streets??? Is it perhaps due to too many variables? Everything is happening too fast? No rules apply for the streets therefore no referee? Being prepared for everything is not possible perhaps? There is no time to get prepared such as warming up may be? Hidden weapons are suddenly being enabled? Being out numbered or not recognising the difference between bystanders and would be attackers? You win the fight so vengeance is taken out on some one you care about? Too many obstacles obstructing or hindering techniques? The ground is not safe enough to fight on? The weather conditions outside are causing poor visibility? The opponent has a vicious dog on a leash? Being taken by surprise? The opponent is on self prescribed medication? The opponent is an experienced street fighter? Now your turn... Why martial arts works on the streets???

  5. It should be noted that not all martial art places or events are nicey nicey hospitality places in both Eastern or Western hemispheres. East West As tutelage in overseas marital art camps, schools or academies can be considered to be very harsh compared to western standards. In the west have adapted the martial art fighting skills from the east and have made it suitable for many types of environments from military to none contact sparring matches, to the absolutely absurd. For western martial art values and judgements upone eastern one's could be considered cruel from an outsider perspective.   7. Thanks for sharing Empty Force and welcome to the forum. The silent video surveillance camera clips , does show something of a person being accosted by a group of men. Reading between the lines and to assume why this is taking place is anyone's guess. Mine is... Seems to me that... Assuming that the girl in the video was being bothered with a man and later on, he is getting a beating for it.

  10. Learning from failure in Sparring. In a Sparring class (some time ago) JKD Was sparring with the top student, no matter what I did, he shut me down. I didn't understand why and what was happening to me. Before I could do anything, he has their, before setting anything up, he was their to shut me down, time after time. Must admit I was becoming discouraged, confused and disappointed in my self, as wasn't use to being out gunned so easily; becoming more and more frustrated as time went on. Was just hoping to change Sparring partners soon, as I was feeling very uncomfortably and humiliated as the seconds of time slowly ticked by. Sure he was younger, taller, faster, stronger but me being older, there was an element of experience on my side as with having many strategies. Why wasn't my Strategising working for me? As it was due to "The Sand Castle Effect" Perhaps this will of use to you in your next Sparring class?

  13. Well I find it funny anyhow, as I don't teach one day self defence classes, reason being... Ironically Due to I can't remember the last day I didn't train in martial arts, as I took today off to do some cleaning. Must admit it feels odd not practicing MA today. As yesterday I had three work outs, that in total lasted about 10 hours, which is why I cut myself some slack today with a day off. Was hitting borderline cramps in my calves on the last 1 of 3. Really deep down I believe learning self defence in one day is not possible. But perhaps it is more about teaching a person confidence in actually doing something, if attacked, than just falling in to being a helpless victim. As a first class in Wing Chun could start off with an introduction to developing, Blading defensive skills Perhaps self defence gadget's might work better for some than others Truth about bullet proof backpacks, tested, for self defence use.

  16. Came across this video about the "Thumb up left hook" worth a look at. As there are other videos out there that are missing the point by using a "Palm down hook" saying that it is stronger and less chance of injury to the wrist; for me personally this is just plain and simple awkward. Watching a trainer and boxer doing palm down hooks, leaves a nice Opening for the ribs to be struck, with that elbow raised higher than necessary. Body mechanics dictates what is right or wrong for each individual as style and technique are not set in stone; this is something to keep in mind; as there are those that prefer something in between thumb up and palm down. My preferred way is tilting the upper body that produces the palms up or thumb down, also horizontal pivoting for torque and power. Where actually shots fired have more to do with how I'm leaning and pivoting combined with knees and feet. Throwing punches/limbs, can gets very tiring, quickly for the arms without using any body hip rotation and legs. Throwing combination punches from multiple directions needs addressing the issue of thumb and palm placement; as this is another beauty in utilising correct wrist rotation and positions. What I see is that there is a confusion, when mixing an over hand with a hook, two different types of punches that can seem similar one as a thumb up and the other as a palm down and thumb down. The palm down hook is a specially cultivated hook punch, intended to get right around a guard hand and strike. Then to pull down on that guard hand, after the strike, to make an opening for another strike with the other hand. Therfore a palm down hook, is a wide hook to strike behind the guard hand, with the intent to continue on to hook the guard hand to make an opening for another strike with the other hand or for MMA purposes towards making a Grappling manouevre. Whereas a thumb up hook's intent is to knock the opponent out, primarily for stand alone boxing purposes.

For me it is the: Uninhibited Punch = fong3 kuen4 AKA Lizard licking punch Practicing the llizard licking punch, has greatly improved my focus, speed, accuracy and to be conciencous, of to be none telegraphing. Of course keep this to yourself, where ever your sparring takes place, as it might be better kept with you alone, than to give away an advantage such as this is not advisable. With a little imagination, lizard licking punching might help you catch your opponent off the fly. Recommend getting this concept licked and loaded first, then let it fly. What element from nature inspires you and why so?

Another requirement when teaching is to get across the idea of not bending one's self out of shape, as this is what you want the opponent to do; especially where the skull or head is involved. Also being able to separate the opponents centre of mass from their compensating balance. Sinking quickly whilst maintaining one's own mass with the compensating balance makes for a usable structure. Strength and endurance is another factor as without it, balance cannot be maintained for very long. Keeping structure while also being dynamic and agile keeping that flow within one's self connected, enabling balance and coordination to happen. Kicking definitely needs to maintain balance to be able to recover from landing and or missing stikes same goes for punches. Consistency in balance, as in keeping and maintaining it with fine compensating adjustments but not over or under doing it, as this is where mistakes can be capitalized upon. All techniques work more effectively with proper balance, as this is where talent, skill, ability seem to favour some more than others. Tai chi is excellent for understanding and improving balance as this one reason why doctors refer elderly people to practice it. Balance physically also needs addressing the right attitude to be effective. Could also introduce strategic balance to this topic, where being in a better position structurally than the opponent's and creating continuing opportunities abound.

  20. Am all up for structural integrity something to keep one's own and attack the opponent's.This is one of my priorities staying balanced. We have in Wing Chun, what is called inside and outside bracing. Outside Bracing, consist of a step to the outside of the opponent and then turning inward; a mini flanking manouevre that could include a bumping action (attacking the structure), including, deflecting or pulling and striking. Inside Bracing, consist of being on the inside of the opponent and turning further inward with a step closer, again with a slight bump (attacking the structure) a type of crowding, closing the gap, enabling close range striking. Both bracing movements, upsets the balance of the opponent, combined with silmutanious defending and attacking, momentarily puts the opponent off balance, opening a window of opportunity, enabling the strikes to land. As the opponent is momentarily looking for balance that isn't necessarily there. Pulling Pushing Passing is another aspect of Upsetting the opponent's structure. Therfore in Wing Chun "make structure, take structure" is an important concept. It is a very important ingredient and factor, when the opponent possesses perhaps other advantages, such as size, strength, aesthetism, speed or youth, to attack their structure first. This is one Wing Chun example.
  21. Having a reasonable idea of Boxing and Wing Chun Merging them together confidently is not difficult. First understanding that both disciplines were developed independently of each other world's apart. Using and developed from body mechanics that suited the culture they were developed in. Eventually boxing and Wing chun exchanged punches with one another and learned that even though both use fists they are both very different from each other. There was a time when the element of surprise against each other existed but today there are hardly no more secrets to be found. There are similarities in both boxing and in Wing chun but primarily they are both fundamentally very different. So different in fact that they compliment each other if merging them is successful. Boxing has been successfully merged with predominantly kicking styles/systems creating kick boxing. Merging boxing and Wing chun for street applications fills a gaps that each respectively put a blind spot towards. As for boxing in a clinch range, is where boxing usually gets broken up and restarted, appropriately this is where in Wing Chun is the place to be, up close in a confined space. However Wing chun against an experienced boxer is at a great disadvantage, due the boxer being able to strike with combinations quickly from many angles and distances which is something which Wing chun is not trained to defend against. Point being, it is essential for Wing chun to spar against boxers to develop the necessary qualities and skills that are truly important factors. One point is to get hit and hit back with resistance from someone with real boxing experience and secondly to prioritise more on physical athleticism and body conditioning. This athleticism was needed for kickboxing to take place in physically demanding bouts. As all boxers knowing that NOT being in shape is a surefire thing towards becoming ineffective, where appropriately dedication towards fitness is a part of becoming proficient at fighting. Of course there is the standpoint that both boxing and Wing chun both lack ground fighting skills where fights mostly end up on the ground, but not forgetting most fights start off standing. Where merging boxing and Wing chun can help win towards the stand up game of winning while standing. Where than looking at which is better boxing or Wing chun, it would be more advantageous to adopt from both, where both sides can help a fighter become more effective in the stand up game.
