I too am a big guy. My new job is more active and have already have to tighten my belt more. Now that school is out for my kid we can exercise and practice at home more. I am planning to test for yellow next month. I started in February. I started at almost 250. I am now around 230.

I realize you are not teaching business, but a couple of the basic classes woild not hurt in the running of the business. -
Degree in martial arts studies?!
LLLEARNER replied to username19853's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Both, if possible! However, I'd select taking business over PhysEd, but only if you're wanting to run a school. If not, then PhysEd would compliment the major quite well. Imho! You don't need a business degree to run a small business. Just take a few of the basics. Accounting I and II, Business Law I and II. Marketing, and a professional writing course or advanced grammar (even this is not necessary, but could prove useful). Try getting into nursing and working in sports medicine, or orthopedics. Good paying, in demand jobs, and you can start with a 2 year degree from a community college for lower entry cost. Many hospitals will pay for you to go to get a 4 year nursing degree after you are already working for them. Then side gig Martial Arts. Maybe teach in a dojo as a fun side job. I work with many people who do this. If you found a degree similar to Phys Ed but a more medical focus then you have a larger pool of employment opportunities. Just some thoughts. I see my and later generations being sold into mountains of debt for hollow promises. Side gigging in a Dojo would provide valuable real world experience which is much better than classroom theory. If you were in an medical/exercise related field skills would transition easily. If you are into business go into accounting. Break the stereotype and be a combat accountant. -
Degree in martial arts studies?!

Even after devaluing the trades and putting a degree on a pedestal we are now even telling kids that it does not matter what you study. We are putting soft sciences (________ Studies) on equal footing with hard science degrees (STEM). We need to train our kids to look ahead and consider the economics of their degree. Study what interests you, be an artist or musician but put food on the table first. Take care of your family first. How many tradesmen have their own successful business or work for one. An electrician or plumber can make a damn good living. And the training is much cheaper. The bar is being raised even in "Professional" fields. A physical therapist used to need just a B S. Now they need an MS and soon to be Doctorate. -
On my best kicks (I am still new) I am getting my foot fully sideways. Not sure if I am describing it correctly. I am also leaning back in the kick..

I have had some training and other athletic endeavors to wonder why I get the pain on one side and not the other, but I have not taken any martial arts before. I know stretching takes time but I want to kick higher.
-
I have been taking a Shotokan class for a few months now and am still having trouble with hip and leg flexibility. Most of the problem stems from not being able to stretch as much as I want. The outside of my right hip is the worst. It actually causes sharp pain when I stretch to far or try to kick much above belt level. My left hip does not have that problem. I can feel it most days even when not stretching or kicking. It does not feel like normal stretching pains. I am 38 so a bit older than most white belts. Does anyone have any idea of what to do or what it could be?

I am fortunate to live in Maine, except for the winters. No Concealed Permit needed, open carry as desired (except for a few areas). The only restrictions we have are Federal. I keep a .45 in my vehicle.

The other half has the Hallmark channel on non-stop.
-
. I am a bit confused here. City police do not need a conceal carry permit and may take their weapons into any establishment. Many LEOs do have a civilian CCP for CYA while off duty.
-
I will definitely look in to this.

Thanks much Iceman. I so want to make a Top Gun joke now. But I am not quick enough at the moment for a good one.

What ancillary part of MA do you LOVE?
LLLEARNER replied to IcemanSK's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have always enjoyed history, mostly 20th century Anglo-European, but recently I have been branching out. I also enjoy the exercise, and it helps to fulfill my need for a little violence in my life. -
dumb self defense laws
LLLEARNER replied to DominikDoherty's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It depends. In your home you may not have a duty to retreat. Separate from that ... When there is a duty to retreat you only have to retreat as far as is practical. This could be environmental (dead end) reasons, or if your retreat puts someone else between you and the attacker. -

I saw this in the theater. It had a limited release and I had to drive an hour to see it. Time well spent. I love this movie. -

Legal problems due to belt rank?
LLLEARNER replied to joesteph's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have not had a chance to read the whole thread, but here is my .02. This is USA based. It is all based on the subjective standard of the reasonable man test. Are the actions taken by the victim reasonable in the situation as it was happening at the time. An action that is reasonable my not be reasonable for your grandmother. Based on the situation, your skill, age, physical condition, size, experience against the assailant's, skill, age, physical condition, size, experience what was the force NECESSARY to stop the action. Was pistol whipping the assailant necessary after he was on the ground begging for mercy? Maybe he is verbally complying but not physically complying (you better be able to articulate it). But would a wrist lock or some such have worked. Most police training includes verbal commands. Get down, stop hitting me, drop the knife, etc. This is done for 3 major reasons. It tells bystanders what is going on. This is important when witness statements are taken, the witnesses are being told a knife is involved even if they cannot see it depending on viewing angle, it also looks less like the Po-Po are beating up a "disadvantaged" citizen for no reason. It continually instructs the perpetrator of what to do, they may start complying. And it keeps the officer breathing, making him/her more effective in the situation. All these reasons are valid and should be used by anyone in a self-defense situation. Also never move the body even if it falls outside unless it is necessary to move the body for continued safety (the body is between you and a safe exit from another assailant). It opens you to tampering with evidence charges and makes you look guilty. Just because the perpetrator was shot in the back or falls outside does not make what the victim did wrong. I would shoot a guy in the back if he was between me and my family (putting them in danger). Okay, I shoot the guy in the back (he was moving toward my daughter), my shot does not instantly neutralize him. He runs outside then his blood pressure drops to low to maintain mobility and he expires on my lawn. I am 100% justified with that explanation of how a dead guy is now my new lawn ornament. After calling the police, do not talk to them. The emotional and hormonal high will over ride your rational brain. Get your lawyer. Only answer questions with your lawyer present. Your lawyer is your rational brain, and guide through the legal hell that will come. Also be prepared for the civil suit that his family will bring for killing their special snowflake altar boy. Be prepared for the press to be against you. They will run pictures of the perpetrator that are of his 8th grade graduation when he is all smiles, sweetness, and full of potential. Never talk to them either, the press is evil incarnate. -

I would bet he is one of the most careful men out there. being both an attorney and BB. Both his job and hobby call for a high degree of detail and CYA. -
Thanks for the advise on lighter classes and the women fights. Is there a season to fight sports like football or baseball?

I am not not really watching to see how different styles match up. Just to watch.
