  1. Merry Christmas to you all.
  2. I wonder if it serves the same purpose as punching your opponent while down in the UFC. Your goal is to get a tap or KO. It seems to serve as a distraction/wearing your opponent down for a submission hold, like a choke or triangle. It appears less harmful than punching as well. I am just guessing. I am sure wiser members can provide a more solid answer.
  3. You can't be that old. I figured you for 40 ish.
  4. I am so glad you posted this. I need to get my goals written down. My place of work has a pedometer based reward system. I am saving the money I earn on that to buy a muay tai bag for my basement. Currently I am almost 3 months into having my yellow belt. My training has suffered some due to being a full-time student, parent, and worker. I am not by nature a rank chaser. I decided to do this for time with my daughter, self-improvement, and fun. That being said, I would like to earn my blue belt, have my daughter pass for yellow next go around, and dedicate more time to training, at least 4 hours/week during the semester, and 7 hours/week when school is not in session. Regardless of time I would like to do 10 reps of kata a day. In addition I want to do more history and philosophy reading pertaining to MA during school breaks. I also need to create my textbook. I do better when I write things down in steps with pictures. It helps my brain retain the steps in a kata, or Judo throw. I have a little notebook I carry with me at work so that I can always have something to study. I need to finish my blue belt one with short descriptions and diagrams. It helped when I studied for my yellow.
  5. I am not sure it is possible in your case or what hoops you might have to go through but it might be nice to train for a day as part of your trip in an Okinawan Dojo. I am new to MA and have decided that when I travel, which is rare, I would try to train in a local dojo at least once. In October I had the chance to go to NYC and took an intro class at Renzo Gracie's BJJ Academy. I chose them because it was something not really available locally to me, and I thought it would be fun. This summer during any non-local internships I may get, I will try to train at least once in something new. When my daughter is old enough to accompany I will try to find something for her to try that is not her normal thing to do, whether it is MA related or not.
  6. If I am not being impolite, may I ask what the cost is? ShureidoUSA does not seem to post the prices. I think it was around $125-135 or so. I bought it years ago. That is not as bad as I thought.

  8. I'm afraid these are really no good for makiwara training--they don't have the right type of resistance. All they are good for is making a nice clacking sound and doing a little knuckle conditioning. I always recommend people build a proper makiwara instead of resorting to these. Thank you Wastelander. I am glad for the feedback. I only want to buy something one time even if it costs a bit more.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these?
  10. Agree 100% Lupin. Tactics like you discuss are often the best way to prevent something from even happening. It is best to have a confrontation not even begin than to try deescalating or fighting. Other options include finding a buddy if you are alone, ask the building security to escort you to your car type stuff.
  11. Congrats. I know in my short time here you have provided great insight and valuable assistance.
  12. He is also one of my supervisors at work although I rarely work with him.
  13. Thanks for the quick response, and for the tip on colors. It is all new territory.
  14. I am considering getting my Sensei a hanbo made from hardwood from his native Dominica for Christmas. Is there anything that would be considered offensive in that? I understand gifts of knives can be offensive to someone from Japan, but was not sure on this.
  15. I am looking forward to it!
  16. This is a good thing. There will be more time available for me to train. He already said he wants to run it so you can drop by to practice individually.
  17. Just to keep people informed. I used oxy clean spray on the stains. It worked. Mostly. The stains while not gone are greatly diminished. I do not plan on using it after every use, but when the staining starts to get bad.
  18. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Even if you are not in the USA, I hope you have time to be thankful for the blessings in life. Also, I hope you are not a turkey.
  19. Since I started less than a year ago, I would probably be watching Netflix instead.
  20. how do you know insects don't taste as good as a steak? Deep fried cicadas for example are supposed be pretty close to lobster (which coincidentally were once upon a time the food of poverty). ....and, have you substantiated this yet???? Never had the opportunity but I'll give anything a go at least once. Fried cicadas, locusts, even tarantulas are popular street food in places like China and Thailand so if I ever get to go to that part of the world I wouldn't say no to trying them. Though actually thinking about it, I would bet nearly everyone on this forum has enjoyed insects as part of their food at some point in their life. Anyone who has had foods containing the red colouring E120 or Carmine has as it is made from ground cochineal insects. Also shellac (used as a glazing for sweets and pills etc.) is sourced from bug excretions. There are a lot of things popular in the orient that I do not plan to put in my mouth.
  21. I think a remake of it could work well.
