Movie night
LLLEARNER replied to LLLEARNER's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I know it may be tough for some dojos when considering the mix of clientele. There can be large age groups that need accommodation as well as personal schedules. Like I said, my brain does not have enough to do. -
Has anyone tried doing a regular movie night at their dojo for martial arts films? I am sorry, I have random thoughts throughout the day. I figure my brain does not have enough to do.

I want to see both the Original 7 Samurai and the new Magnificant Seven

Ooooh. Food controversy. Let me get the popcorn and beer.

It will be some time before my current gi is worn out. I hope.

Maybe for my next gi I will look into the K-11 What is the price point? I might try some oxyclean directly on it for a treat. I am hesitant to use bleach because I don't want the fabric to degrade faster than normal. I must have super sweat glands because you should see some of my undershirts. lol.

I wear an under armour.

I have read the same. It sounds like it is the aluminium reacting with sweat. I have seen home made remedies for this. Yes, i still want to wear deodorant. I just did not know if you knww of a way to clean it out. I am nervous with home brew remedies.

I have a question. I have taken care of my gi well. It is a 14 oz Pro Force. I wash it immediately when getting home and hang dry it after the wash. I Iron it a few days later. While the gi has stayed white I noticed that the armpits are yellowing. I do wear a shirt under it. Has anyone been successful with eliminating the yellowing? And if so, how?

In other words, KISS (Keep it Stupid Simple). It also tends to be a very Western answer to problem solving. Many Eastern cultures worry more about saving face.

How can i start martial arts as a new person?
LLLEARNER replied to mominacrmc's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree with the above posts. Try each club a couple of times. Talk to the Instructors and students about what the like. See which group you mesh best with. Join whichever one fits your budget, schedule, personality, and style preferences. For me, I wanted something I could do with my daughter, and fit my evening work schedule and day school schedule. My Sensei also happens to be one of my supervisors at work, but he is amazing with kids and adults. He really has a heart to teach. The only thing lacking now is he needs his own space. -
Maybe I read this wrong, but I understood it to be more of a letter grading system like what is already used in school. Traditional belts really don't translate to letter grades because they are pass or fail and test next time.

Interesting. I do understand that when you are dealing within an educational bureaucracy the seems to push kids through there needs to be something that indicates progress for "civilian" minds to digest. I like how you distinguish it from your ranking system so if the kids transition from school to you there is no sense of starting all over again but more of a partial credit earned.

I would not want to live in NYC, although I can see the appeal. My only complaint and I am not sure if I can really complain as it seemed to be how most places were. The lack of air conditioning. Unless there was a product that would suffer from excessive heat everywhere seemed not to really bother with AC.

One of the reasons I started karate was for my back. Almost 2 years ago I fell and ended up with what I think is a herniated disk. I never did go to a doctor about it. I probably should get it checked at some point. I figured the movement in martial arts would help. It still messes with my coordination sometimes and my feet and legs go numb.

Tai Chi for exercise
LLLEARNER replied to LLLEARNER's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I kinda was hoping to have a mix. I have also seen the deep flowing movements of Tai Ch and thought that it would help my flexibility (especially the hips) with a lower impact. I have never been called graceful so I thought it might help that too. I feel like I am Godzilla stomping around the mat. -
Etiquette at your dojo
LLLEARNER replied to Nidan Melbourne's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I noticed the same thing when I tried the Renzo Gracie Academy on a mini-vacation. For warm-ups the Sensei would count to 5 and the class finished to 10, they also did the fist-bump high fives and handshake at the end. I am not familiar with other schools, so I don't have anything to compare it to. -
