Aerobic Kickboxing
Valn replied to KickChick's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I don't really like the fact that a lot of places simply put "Kickboxing" instead of aerobick kickboxing. You see walk into the place believing you will do kickboxing but you end up doing aerobic, so I think a lot of places should change their adds. My dojo is one example. They teach karate and have a big sign saying kickboxing but in reality its nothing more than aerobic. -

Here is another thing that I hate about sparring. *My sensei doesn't tell me all the combination that works. *I never seem to practice a lot of technique since its all about hitting. *Sparring doesn't like karate at all. Here is a quote from Nakayama [ This Message was edited by: Valn on 2001-08-28 06:24 ]

I will only say this "Boards don't hit back" by Bruce Lee

Jeet Kune Do
Valn replied to Iron Arahat's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
"absorb what is useful" sounds right, but how many people really know what is useful. In order for a technique to be useful it has to be tested in the street and see how good it works. -
In my dojo the sparring goes like that: Once you have yellow belt you suppose to go spar with just anybody. You can get hit anywhere above the belt. They say don't hit the face area such as the nose, teeth and so on, but in reality it seems my sensei ends hitting me in the nose, temple and jaw. In addition, I never liked sparring with my sensei that much because he says "I'm not punching hard" but in reality in puts in way more force necessary to get the job done. Do you guys think its fair when you are yellow belt and spar with brown belt and a 7 degree black belt? On the good side you learn faster but you tend to lose a lot. Finally one thing that piss me off is that I never hit people in the nose or jaw because I know where I'm aiming, but somehow the other guys with higher ranks seems careless.

Jiu-Jitsu Introduction
Valn replied to Lars's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Thanks for the information man. -
I don't know about the banana thing considering I eat a lot of them, but I'm sure extremely sore from that intense abdominal work out we had to do.

I know that in my previous post I was a little upset because it seems that I have wasted my time since I will have to start from zero in karate for the third time. However, I once heard a chinese saying that in order to learn a new art you must empty your cup and start clean and empty. What is done is done.

Jeet Kune Do
Valn replied to Iron Arahat's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Jeet kune do is an incomplete art when Bruce Lee unfortunately died too soon and he wasn't able to give it the finishing touch. Lets remember that Bruce Lee first started in the Wing Chun kung fu style, but Yip Man the great master didn't finish his training, so Bruce came up with his own martial arts. In addition, Jeet kune do fighter will never reach the skills of Bruce Lee because they lack "core" which is Wing Chun with all its important concept. good luck man -
I guess your rank doesn't transfer from one karate style to another. The shotokan sensei said if you want to keep your current rank leave the dojo or start as a beginner. Now, one thing that I find a bit ridiculous is that you can beat a black belt and yet you start as a beginner. I think belt should be based on skills rather than the time that you stay at a dojo. In the end, it is all about the money.
-
I would like to think that a black belt would be an awesome fighter but in reality this is far from the truth. Now, I'm not saying that every black are bad fighters, but it's not the belt that makes the fighter. In short, the pretty black belt will not be here to fight for you in a street fight, and it is the skills of the fighter that will save him. Finally, I don't mean to offend people that really cares about the belt ranking as this only reflect my opinion.

Funakoshi was only a 5th dan and yet he was considered a great master.
-
I guess if you shuffle around instead of bouncing would sound like a pretty fair compromise.
-
Therefore, Wado ryu do not meet force with force as much as in shotokan.
-
From various instructor and styles of martial arts I have heard two different answers. Some said that bouncing is bad thing because it waste energy, but on the otherhand I've heard other instructor said that bouncing is the key in sparring and fighting.

Pros for sparring. *You get to see what works and what doesn't *This is the closest thing that you will get to a fight. Cons of sparring. *Tag game. A simple tag in the street will cost you dearly. *Strikes are done above the belt. In a street fight kicks are done below the belt because they are far quicker. *There are rules, but in street fight everything goes and this may lead martial artist to bad habits. *In conclusion, sparring has become too much of a sport and away from the real thing.

I don't believe in giving black belt to kidds. I think after 15 years old I wouldn't mind seeing a black belt but beyond that nope.
-
If there was a club of kyokushin then yeah I would have continued in that style.
-
My goju ryu club I'm starting to get sick of it. Reasons: * Issue with belt promotion. *Sparring isn't all that fun. EX: Sensei says practice your technique and no need to strike hard but he is doing just the opposite. The rules, says no strike to the face and yet I got hit in the nose, jaw, and teeth. Note, I'm a blue belt and yet I can aim. *Lots of other subtle reasons. I loved my kyokushin club far better.
