While sparring in shotokan do you guys wear protection such as helmet, gloves and so on? Right now, I have only sparred in goju ryu and our sensei makes us wear gear. I guess that give him a good reason to strike hard.
-
If you move from one style of karate to another, should you be able to keep your current belt or must you restart from scratch.
-
Hey Goose, Thanks I'll definitely look for that book.
-
If that is the case, then shi-to ryu has more hard element then goju ryu.
-
I know that ****o ryu is similar to Goju ryu and that we have quite a few kata in common, but I can't remember what is main difference between the two styles.
-
How important is sparring in comparison to working on your moves. What is the most essential and has the most benefit to your training. Also, how often should you spar per week? I usually spar once a week.

Blue dragon could you tell me or give me a link to 14 kyokushin kata. In the goju ryu style I have learn Geki sai dai ichi, seisan, and saifa. Goju Ryu kata list: Gekisai dai ichi, Gekisai dai ni, saifa, seiyunchin, shisochin, sanseru, sepai, kururunfa, sesan, suparinpei, tensho, sanchin.

I don't know if I will ever wear a black belt since I currently unsure about continuing in karate. However, I expect a black belt to have a good mastery of the basic and he/she should know quite a few things about the art. My original goal was to reach black belt not so much for getting the black belt but being self suficient and being able to continue to work on my own and work on my own.

50 kata! That's crazy! I don't see how you can remember and perform each kata to perfection. If you really have 50 kata, I wonder how often you learn a new one.

At the moment I own the series "Best karate" by Nakayam and "Dynamic karate" by Nakayama. Is there some better books which are worthy of buying?
-
To be honest, I feel cheated considering my goju ryu sensei made me wait so long to get my yellow belt since I had already had four months of Kyokushin karate. (kyokushin= shotokan +goju ryu). I could have advanced faster if I had gone to the all night work out, but I felt it was cheating, so I never did any. By the way, you do get free pizza if you do the all night work out.

Do you believe that having 26 kata in shotokan is too much? At the moment I know Heian 1-5, Tekki 1-3, and Hangetsu. Tekki 2 and 3 aren't necessarily important if you consider the similarity with the first Tekki. In fact, all the Tekki will improve your strength in your legs, so I don't really see the point of doing two other kata which are really working on the same thing.

Imagine you go to an all night work out for $50 and the next day you received a belt promotion. Does this sound fair to you? This makes me very upset and I completely lost faith in my dojo. Basically you are simply buying your new belt. To be more specific. Belt rank in my dojo: white, yellow, orange, blue, green, purple, brown, brown black stripe, red, and black belt. -I did four months of Kyokushin karate and then moved on to goju ryu karate. -I started goju ryu in my dojo september 2 2000 and I am a blue belt. -I go to my dojo 4-5 times a week and I practice everyday at home. In conclusion, I moved up in rank every four months. On the other hand another guy at my dojo started in november and that was his first martial art ever. -He is now a purple belt. -He shows up 1-2 times a week -He did two all night work out and moved up a belt everytime. In conclusion, every two months he moved a rank. The bottom line is that I think it is totally unfair and it makes the whole idea of belt useless. I would appreciate your feedbacks. Thanks.

Kata have their benefit, but not when it comes to street fighting.

Because of Bruce Lee I will always be amazed by Nunchaku. Man I love those things.
-
I love the escrima sticks because they are easy to use and you can easily find some on the streets. For example, grab two car antena and you are ready to rock

I like the lawyer comment I also think that Bruce Lee would win due to his martial background. The lightning speed and effectiveness of wing chun and the addition of the best of every martial arts Bruce became in contact with. -
About Sparring
Valn replied to Valn's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I know footwork is important, but what I'm really looking for is what type of combinations seems to work best. For instance, back fist reverse punch and so on. -
I think one of the sad part about kata is when the interpretation of the move is lost.

For the short term I will continue Karate in shotokan and goju ryu until december. After that I will quit both of them and concentrate on Wing Chun. Right now, I kind of regret investing all this time in karate because in terms of fighting skills I would have been far higher if I done wing chun. Wing Chun: Block and strike at the same time. This art is made for street fight. Accuracy and perfect timing is what this art is all about.

Shotokan is like a mix of shorei ryu karate and shorin ryu karate so there is no way it would have been one of the oldest style. I know some of the more recent type of karate are Wado ryu which was created by one of Funakoshi student and its shotokan with some grapling. Kyokushin was created by Oyama and it is a mix of Shotokan and Goju ryu.
-
Footwork is extremely important and especially in sparring. I can't give you some advice since I have yet to perfect my footwork but good luck.
-
I do find you sensei abusive. Life is short, so if you don't like his way, don't give up and look around for other dojo.

Bruce lee because he was the a real martial artist unlike Jackie Chan which is more a martial artist for TV. Anyway, the real question shoud have been. Bruce Lee VS Jet Li Jet Li is a real martial artist so it would have been very interesting.
