Hey guys...I really need some advice and help on how to sit cross legged. iTs quite embarassing i can't. I am 16 and am very athletic for my age and have extremely good upper body flexibilty but need to work on lower body flexibility. I have desgined a stretchin regime but i feel the starting target is to sit in cross legged position. I can sort of sit in it but my kneees come up really high and it hurts after a while. any stretches the good people here at karate forums could reccomend me? thank you ^ _^

yes i believe so...i am no expert but i think it works out the cardio and also builds some fast twitch fibres in your legs (quads and hamstrings...tiptoes so it probably develops the calf muscles too) so your footwork for kumite is greatly enhanced

i am not an expert but i can suggest perhaps bouncing on a soft surface i.e. grass or sand etc. This might reduce the impact on the knee joints...the concept seems beneficial if done with caution.

I agree with MMouse and also the fact that biceps are mainly used for retracting and pulling motions whereas the triceps are more pushing and thrusting motions but both play a part in everything i guess in most techniques so should be trained accordingly. I have a question of my own: there are certain training methods within karate itself e.g. in shotokan i hear people stay in shiko-tachi for long periods of time to strengthen legs. What methods can be used in karate itself to target the biceps specificially (e.g. a technique from a kata?)???

I didn't mean any offence - I was just in a rush...will remember in future.

what do you mean by 'breathing hand'?
-
what i meant was in our shito-ryu karate, the sanchin kata (i think) is very important...our sensei said that we should perform it when tired or something along the lines of that....in the actual kata, there is a move where the mind is tricked into thinking that the biceps are working and after holding the position (without weights), the biceps become very tired, thus working them and making them stronger....IN THEORY lol....can any one verify this myth for me?
-
in the shito-ryu, is seisan and sanchin different? and also....when u want to condition the bicep muscles, do u breath out or in?

thx for the help....i find it hard to train coz i need to study too rite....i dnt actually play in the srcum coz i ain;t a forward....i play either inside or outside centre....that is like 7 metres from the scrum....

thank you very much Tibby...i need to now design a workout that will not affect my growth too much...any suggestions? oh and another thing...i play rugby and it's training kinda coincides with my karate training...the leg press machine takes away my flexibility, etc....i need some expert help for workouts for junior members....endurance is better rite?
-
thank u for the reply....i feel i was a little undergrowing (15 yrs of age) and i need to get bigger if i am going to make our local squad...i was wondering whether learning this kata and practicing it regularly would help me grow....or perhaps this is the incorrect theory...???

well, this is a random question but i am sure u guys have herd of the dance that the new zealand rubgy players perform before they play a match...alongside being traditional...it also boosts their homrmones so they become more aggressive and their strength is more focussed, etc...well i was wondering whether the sanchin kata has similar effects in guys...? if so...is there a special way of performing it that is different from performing it in a grading for example?
-
basically it is a very flowing kata with alternating motions of the wrists. it rotates the wrists and streches all the muscles, tendons n ligaments n stuff and if u do it properly, ur wrists hurts afterwards! its from kung fu apparently and for my shito-ryo style, where our guard is almost a vertical wrist, its useful for wrist flexibility
-
in our karate,we were taught a kata called tencho from kung fu which when performed properly can strengthen wrists....any1 herd of it?

picture urself in the following scenario...: ur in the ring rite and u come up against this 7 foot propa hench guy and u r abt 4 foot n have no where near the mass of him....ok...there is all that stuff abt size n strength not being everythin but u can't help feeling a lil hesitation...wat do u do? do u fite like a man n end up wiv 2 black eyes and a broken collar bone or do u run out of the ring and live ur life in shame forever? n e way to overcome this hesistation and not to b put off -is it down to practise?
-
pity no1 has replied...i am really interested in the mental training aspect of shotokan karate as well... n e wanna help us?
-
thx guys 4 ur replies i am not sure abt full contact but it is definitely a spar...and i am a very inexperienced fighter....i have done little kumite at my club, focusing on kata mainly- though our club is renowned for great fighters so i kinda let down the club however, my opponent uses mainly hand techniques and i can block his kicks so for hand techniques shall i just do some normal blocks rite?

i have a grading this saturday i.e in 2 days i have to fight one of my training partners as part of the grading we also have a flexibilty test whereby u have to sit legs out on the floor, bend over and touch the floor with ur elbows which i absolutely can't do because my flexibility is limited... are there any tips? also the guy i am gonna fite is like ma close friend and i don't want to hurt him or n e thing so i am kinda in a predicament.... any tips much appreiciated.
