  1. I have really enjoyed reading this thread.
  2. This is a tough one but I have to agree with a number of points that Patrick made. Further, as a parent I like to observe my child's progress, areas of weakness, whether they enjoy the classes, and the quality of instruction. We have a glass wall between the floor and the sitting area. This helps tremendously. The parents can watch but not interfere in anyway whatsoever.
  3. Quoting the great Steve Buschemi in ConAir: "define irony" Obviously I don't condone how the instructor handled the situation. However, my "gray area" alarm is going off. Either way it's not worth getting hung up on. Perhaps it's a classic case of bad chemistry. By the way, I totally agree with your advice of brushing off the dirt and moving. True words of wisdom!
  4. I had an instructor that was very bothered by this. It didn't and doesn't bother me much. I personally can't imagine stopping but I also think that most people do the best with what they have and that often it happens that life simply gets in the way. Life : try your best, results will vary.
  5. There are too many moments to pick one. But if I must, it's the day I was promoted to instructor. The journey is never over, but being recognized to have the ability to teach others is a pretty amazing feeling.
  6. 140? Now you're talkin'!!!
  7. That's very cool. I've had a similar experience. Our bodies have an amazing ability to adapt - even to allergies - so that we continue with bad habits. However the results are poor physical symptoms including excess weight or fat - even at 15 years old. Obviously we can't know enough from this post to determine if a food allergy is the problem, but it's worth ruling out.
  8. Interesting post. I have a different take. At brown belt I think most people think it's close enough. These folks aren't lifelong practitioners and are in it only for the belt. And brown belt sounds pretty good. Know what I mean?
  9. Alright. Now this has piqued my curiosity. Gonna have to check it out.
  10. Hello Sword Knight !!!
  11. This is an interesting thread. I've personally witnessed the evilness of soccer moms, hockey dads, and baseball parents, but never anything worth mentioning with martial arts parents. Quite to the contrary, I taught a kids class for many years, and my kids now train, and I typically found parents to be on the same page. Occasionally, I had to have a chat with a parent, but all in all I found that most parents got it. Hmmm...wondering if I was just that lucky!?
  12. Pretty amazing! He just got so much cooler!
  13. These are all good comments. If you've addressed all diet and exercise as noted above then you might consider testing for food allergies or intolerances. Even a minor intolerance can cause pepsin spikes that make it impossible to lose the last 5 to 10 pounds of fat. This may sound crazy but it's more common than most people know, even most doctors.
  14. Congrats! Albeit a surprise I'm sure it's well deserved. Now get after the next one!
  15. I am a big fan of Paulson! Solid fighter in his day and a great teacher!
  16. Oh and welcome!

I agree 110% It's too personal a choice to rely on third party opinion.
  19. I feel like there's a billy-goat joke in here somewhere but I came up with nothin'
  20. You, my friend, are hard core. *bowing*
  21. Very cool But why precisely 109?
  22. When I was younger, I wanted people to know because part of me wanted to prove myself. To whom? I don't know, but I told everybody. As I became more mature, I realized that the more people I told, the more problems it would potentially create for me. At a party a friend my get in a fight and say "Hey, my buddy John is a BB, let me get him over here and he will show you what's what!" I now know that I don't ever want to be in a real life fight if I can help it. now that's an awkward situation !
  23. I agree although if you work a bag regularly then I would recommend bag gloves for bag work. I don't see any advantage to training on the bag with MMA gloves regularly. Quite the contrary actually.
  24. Interesting replies. Anyone try doing their cardio before class? On Saturday mornings I'll do a run at 7:30 and show up sweaty and warmed up for our 8:30 class. It actually helps tremendously.
