  1. Wait until your Sensei tells you! I 200% agree ! If he thinks you're ready he'll ask. Remember, being ready is about more than just knowing and executing the techniques. Among other things it's also about your frame of mind. I'm not saying you're not ready, but rather that your sensei may have his or her reason for pushing you further.
  2. Tip of the cap to Mexico. Despite the loss they played a marvelous game.
  3. I can appreciate that. At times I think I focus too much on cardio and not enough on core strength. Hmmm, your post is making me consider an adjustment to my schedule.
  4. Like with all things there is a limit. I like to do at least 3 to 4 classes per week. I make time to practice at home as well and spend a lot of time thinking, reading, and stretching for the martial arts. Another aspect of training for me as I get older especially but ever since I started many years ago is my conditioning. In this regard I also run, bike, and/or swim at least 3 to 4 times a week. There are many benefits to my extra conditioning exercises and one is that I can train longer and harder when I'm in class. So I think it's good to strike a balance in your training between MA specific training and general physical activity and exercise. By the way I also value the social aspect of martial arts. In this regard I also have several friends that I go running with that are not martial artists at all. For me, the social aspect of exercising in general is very important. It's good to "get out", in my opinion it makes you a better martial artist.
  5. I like how you're approaching this situation. We have a responsibility as martial artists to be decent human beings. Trying to help her turn this around is the right thing to do. Ultimately she may have to go or be asked to leave, but you'll know that've you tried.
  6. I agree with Zaine. Although if I have to pick one it's my heart. I tend to focus on cardio when I'm in the gym. After that I do joint strengthening exercises which develop muscle groups in general but also reinforce your joints.
  7. Great advice !
  8. Thanks for sharing ! Fascinating. Fun to watch and listen to his form. Do you guys use sound to punctuate your patterns?
  9. Unless her husband signed a non-compete agreement. Many schools will have instructors sign these indicating, for example, that if they leave they may not start a school or teach martial arts within X miles (usually 50) and may not contact or speak directly with students for a period of X months (usually 12) after their departure. There are many iterations of non-competes out there. He should know if he signed one. Even a non-compete is usually null if the person is fired. Otherwise it would be easy to take advantage of it. Maybe, maybe not. As with all agreements it's all in the fine print. I'm simply pointing out one example. Anyone can make or file a claim - it's the circumstances and the documents/agreements that are in place, among other things, that would be weighed.
  10. Forgot about Ong Bak Good one! And this thread wouldn't be complete without JLo's boxing flick titled "Enough" Ok just kidding !

  12. I laughed, l cried, two thumbs up !!!
  13. I agree the battle scenes were terrific. Good question though. I really liked the training scenes after Cruise's character was captured and he was being brought into the fold culturally and as a martial artist - I thought the sword training and sparring was great to watch and very realistic. Further I liked the scenes in the cherry blossom orchard emphasizing the philosophical side of MA.
  14. Great question and great choice! One of my favorites. So many good choices but I go with The Last Samurai An epic story about a martial artist and his transformation
  15. I take the same approach. Few things make me feel worse, mentally and physically, than not training or exercising. I have to be feeling very very low in order to not work out - even a 2 mile jog can provide a much needed boost in the way I feel.
  16. In awe of you both Sensei8 and DevilDog!!!
  17. I agree with Bushido's comments and add that in my opinion this is a matter between the student and the other instructor. Your student was not there representing you or with your direction - from what you've explained he was there simply to train. In my humble opinion it's a matter between the student and the other instructor and it's up to the student whether he returns or where he spends his time training. I actually believe that it's out of line for you to speak with the other instructor. At the same time, I do think it's within your right to speak with your student about it and let him or her know that you're there for them to offer guidance and advice. Just my humble opinion.
  18. Thank you !!! Going to give it a good read !
  19. Hi, I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know the exact answer to this. I chose the school because I really really like the instructor, he's great teaching me and my kids, and we have a blast each and very class. The bottom of my last certificate says World Tae Kwon Do Federation...does that answer the question? This is obviously something that I need to get smart on.
  20. I think you're handling it perfectly. Your approach respects the art and sets a wonderful example for your students.
  21. It's not often that I can say this but I am humbled by your post. I happen to agree with you but had a moment of "aha!" while reading. You're training along with your lifelong pursuit of being a martial artist is preparing you to fight all of life's battles. You live your life, as do many of us, becoming strong in mind and strong in spirit. And while there may be a day that your unable to perform, or even teach, a spinning back kick for instance, you will face all of life's challenges head on and be better for it because of your training! I understand that this may not be your point exactly, but it's my humble take on reading your post. Thank you !
