  1. i'm not too sure about that gi, but I have used several of the arawaza gi's with good results. Have the Seishin gi on order at the moment which I am going to try out at tournaments next year
  2. I can respect the JKA for having those guidelines for their students to follow. But then again they should learn how to do kumite earlier than that. At my dojo (it was the same at my old one, and at a couple of my friends dojos) we start teaching our students kumite as yellow belts (8th kyu) but some if they are old enough as white belts. And that is for both our juniors and seniors. Our reasoning for that is because the earlier they learn it the more confident they will be with it. Also they will be comfortable with getting hit as well, so when they get more experienced they can take harder hits. So they learn control + how much strength to put into each technique, timining, distancing.
  3. Sorry but what happens when your sensei slows down and stops being able to be thrown around and throw others? Will you tell him that sorry he can't be your teacher any longer and you're moving on to better things? That it is very true. They have gotten to the point that they cant so certain things but they try their hardest to teach others. My sensei's old instructor broke his back (severely) 20 years ago and now is in his 80's. He cant be thrown comfortably anymore and he can barely throw anyone still. But he can still verbally walk people through the moves and tell them how to do it safely.
  4. Thank you to whoever nominated me and then to all those who voted for me. You all just gave me that warm fuzzy feeling. Congratulations to all the other award winners you all deserve it
  5. Sounds like you had fun
  6. Goju is a combination of hard and soft whilst kyokushin is hard. If you want a fluid style then go for goju (im bias' because i study goju). But having a good teacher is very important.
  7. it is when you get hit in a location and has caused bruising. also called deadleg or quadriceps contusions (called that because it is common to the thighs, hamstrings or glutes) for more info: http://physioworks.com.au/injuries-conditions-1/corked-thigh-bruised-quadriceps
  8. You'll get through the soreness soon. Your body will quickly grow into it and it will learn what your doing is actually beneficial to it. All of us get sore after a class every once in a while because we work that hard. Like right now i am sore from Monday Nights class because of what work we did. And probably didn't help because one of my friends training that night left me with a stinger of a kick on one butt cheek then gave me a corky on the other. Admittedly we were being buttheads when he corkyed me Like Bushido_man96 said lay off on the outside training for now until you can recover. Your body will get stronger quite quickly after a few weeks of training.
  9. 6 months 1 year 5 years 10 years 50 years? Nope everyone is a beginner till they die. Everyone is still learning and developing, they may have mastered techniques but they are still learning how to use it and what not to use it for.
  10. I was shocked when he said it didnt exist because why would you say that? Wouldnt you look at other styles out of curiousity if you were wanting to learn or see what karate is all about. Also the fact that he trained in shitoryu should have made him think twice about what he said. Note he was in his late 30's early 40's as well so there shouldnt been an excuse for his behaviour.
  11. Jion is one of my favorite kata from Shotokan
  12. The second I saw Nipaipo I figured you were Shito-Ryu but also the fact it is under your "styles" biography. My list is Jion Seeiunchin Seisan Seipai Kururunfa Suparempei (will be my dominant finals kata unless I have to pull it out earlier)
  13. At the tournaments that you compete in specifically kata, what are the ones that you will perform at every single tournament or what is your general lineup of kata that you perform?
  14. Welcome to the forum and good luck for your journey along with your kid. Let us know how you go
  15. So I was practicing some kata in one of the parks close to my place this morning. Now I am a goju practitioner but today was different slightly as I practiced the few kata that I know that i do outside of my style; name Anan, Empi/Enpi and Jion Now this GKR Salesman came up to me and asked me what kata I was doing and asked about my training. But I also enquired about their training and that they have trained for over 15 years in GKR and 5 years of Shito-Ryu. They had attained the rank of Yondan in GKR and Shodan in Shito-ryu. They recognized Empi/Enpi because they do it themselves in GKR. Then they had no idea about the other two. Then tried to tell me that the other two aren't even kata. But the fact that they have also trained in Shito-Ryu dumbfounds me when they said that. As I would have expected that they would know there are hundreds of styles of karate with hundreds of kata. When I asked them of all the styles that they knew of all they said was: Go-Kan-Ryu, Shotokan, Shito-Ryu, Goju-Ryu. When I also asked why they said that Jion and Anan weren't real kata they said they don't exist because they don't exist in GKR and that they never learnt them in Shito-Ryu. They also asked me why i even bother learning kata from other styles when you can just learn the ones in your style. When i heard that i thought "why would i restrict myself to one style of karate in relation to training?" and that is what i basically said to them. Learning kata from other styles is beneficial to your own training to give you a different perspective on it and also it is for the enjoyment of learning and training. Now I compete as well so having kata from various styles comes in handy. But that is not the reason why i learn these other kata. After a little bit this salesman tried to sell me a membership and I rejected their offer considering i have heard bad things about it. But also because they were ignorant about other martial arts that they were coming across as really rude. They were trying to push it on me until i had to give them a firm no. Of which they then stormed off because they didn't get me on board. I do give him credit for listening to my side and not criticizing me as much as i would have thought. But I was facepalming because of what they were saying.
  16. I agree that there is no real expectation for you to remember kata above the belt grade that your going for. Whenever we grade at my dojo we are only required to be able to perform up to our belt level (and do it well) + know the pattern of the kata in the next belt level/dan grade but not know the finer details of it. For instance for me I have to be able to do Seisan (it is a 2nd dan kata at my school) and be able to know the pattern of Seipai (3rd Dan Kata). in our advanced class we have been taught the remainder of the kata in our style. So we can work on them at our own pace, but the only other reason we do it is so for the few of us that train in this class that also compete can get those kata stronger
  17. It depends on how many times you train in that time. But from memory Isshinryu has some roots from Shotokan so you should be set there. Especially with Ticky Donovan's he would use it. It depends on the instructor and the school itself. If it is ISKF or JKA they will have requirements that the school will have to comply with. Since you have Kyokushin + ishyinryu training you will progress much faster than those without that prior training.
  18. Hey all, I am looking at creating an 'app' or application that can be used on all tablets (ie ipad) and smartphones. And I am wondering if there are any good sites that can do that for me and that is free (that I can do myself)? The idea of the app is so karate students can have a handy list of terminology that they can look up and learn different terms outside of class. What do you all think? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  19. I have been following it a lot and have been looking forward to it all year. I am looking forward to watching all the videos as they get uploaded

Karate for me isn't really a hobby. But my girlfriend does train with me privately, as I teach her. She can't keep up with the classes in the dojo due to her physical injuries (are pretty severe)
  21. i train in a gym like you sometimes and I wear shoes that have good grip
