  1. Wow! :o Good luck in all your goals!
  2. Hello Chrissyp ... i don't but I do see an appeal in this style of combat! To be honest the traditionalist in me says "Yes I'd say so", less rage monster types would take this art up IMO! Its more like the real fight world be than pure karate or pure judo fight is, and the traditionalist in me sees an honour code I understand/recognize, http://www.daidojuku.com/eng/news/2014/detail/14009.html but... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVOw7KvS1MI ... I could be wrong! Seems there are a few rage monsters here as well! Looks to be a fair alternative to MMA, reminds me (or at least it satisfies my imagination) of what the original Kyokushin/Oyama Karate classes were like"back in the day". http://www.daidojuku.com/eng/index.html
  3. 1. The very best of luck to you on both tests! 2. Enjoy! please enjoy! 3. 4. A point in time to aim for, good for!!
  4. 15/12 kata - Tensho, 1hr (BBs have a Christmas demo to give!) 1hr fighting half power.
  5. I know totally unexpected! I felt I was going mad or something, the Idea to share and learn was (to me anyway) a major point to the MA mind set. I'm back in a Kyokushin Dojo all dressed up as per 'our' dress code, training and now working towards my Shodan grading next year! In the dojo, we have a couple TSD boys a couple of MMA guys, and a couple of TKD guy these guys arrived in there 'uniforms' and were welcomed as they are and even asked to wear there grades as they had earned them! Most of them have now started to wear our uniform as they wish to 'learn' and work form us. Sure it was not the welcome I received from some of the dojos I walked into but that's possibly why I like my new dojo ...its fits with what I think and feel is right! The safest answer I can think of is to ask and be sure to not step on toes and so on. Some it would seem are more enlightened than others.
  6. Unexpected that is for sure! When I think about it and to be honest I've not really considered it ... when I do, the idea "its a mind set" thing, simply is sufficient answer it satisfiesthe way I look at it. My simple and basic idea in a box answer supports the idea as well ... its just the mind set, a different way to see the same problem and respond!
  7. 10/12 Kata to 4th kyu kihon to 4th kyu 50 push ups 50 sit ups Bag work 45 mins power strikes power kicks
  8. Good discussion!! Outside the dojo, some of guys go to Jujitsu, judo or MMA classes, a couple play 'Football' (soccer) or rugby and so on. Most go to the gym ... We all as part of the lead up to tournament get together outside the dojo and go running, and use local climbing frames and so on for general exercising .. sit ups and pull ups and so on. What I find interesting is the guys that do 'another' sport that is not MA at all in any way, the football or rugby players, these guys are more grounded less jittery when training. Where the guys that do MMA or judo etc etc are more intense and pumped to the point of bursting, and less attentive, focussed yes, but its a like a fog or something that seems to thrown them off just a little...jittery! It seems to me the 'cross' training, doing a none combat sport, opens the mind to alternative ideas, focus and even direction on driving and pushing yourself. The guys seem more grounded, balanced and focussed!
  9. tricky to be honest! I to stopped training for an age and when I started back, I visited local dojos as my old dojo was no more. Like you I wore what I had, a Kyokushin Gi, and in some of the clubs I visited it took all of two or three seconds before the senior grades ...displayed there thoughts or feelings about that. Some clubs were not openly bothered I was under the impression that they accepted I was a former student of another system and what I was wearing was simply all that I had to offer. Over time I obtained a standard Gi (no badges etc) which reduced the demonstrations of feelings towards me a great deal! My thoughts and ideas about MA took a knock as a result, the 'romantic idea' I had about honour and respect evaporated, it took an age before I came to terms and gained a new insight on the MA honour code. Anyway, enough of my musing I'd promote the idea that it is best to wear trousers and a tee until you understand what that is, .. or just ask them what they need form you and turn up day one as expected!
  10. ..cut 'n' paste ... so I cheated!LOL ------------------------------- ... for 2015? Hmm ... The plan is ... for the moment anyway ...! Compete in the Regional Tournament (Open division!) ... and account for myself honestly! Go to Summer camp for a Shodan grading with Hanshi! National Clicker Tournament ... it could all change! Its the BKKs 50th year anniversary as well so I dare say a few things could get added as the year unfolds! There is a national tournament (as always) but with the grading close to this on the calendar .. not sure I can commit to it! We'll see, I'm sure I'll be given my decision by Shihan and Sensei!! --------------- ... and a new addition has already taken hold and is growing ... more on that when things settle down and plans and decisions start to be setup and put into action!

  12. There is a certain idea romantic or not, that's up to you to decide, but the notion to go around doing that is a cool one to be open and honest with you! The idea of doing some sort of travelling diary/blog of the various dojos visited and the people met ... I'm liking the idea a great deal!
  13. HAHAHA!! ...sorry for that, at my age mostly everyones younger than me...might need to get the glasses checked! Sorry for that, just assummed and then proceeded to place both feet squarly into my mouth!
  14. well done young man! as its the December month you have to wear a Santa hat when you visit the forum to post!!
  15. Isami belts. Or rather belts made by Ismai for Kyokushin karate. They are specially made , effectively branding them 'Kyokushin Belts'. e.g: The pic at the top of this dojo site! http://www.kyokushin.org.nz/getting_started.htm

  19. hehehe! Welcome to Body Biology 101 Martial Arts style! (BBMA) What is BBMA ? The science of 'sudden discovery of body parts and/or areas you never new you had that suddenly hurt' ... and the do hurt don't they? LOL! Warm baths, a days rest between sessions is strongly advised, and a steady pace, its not a rush never was a rush. After a while as you note the aches reduce, become less and less pronounced or noticed, in time you'll not notice anything and feel 'that much better' for it as well, that is when you step up a gear! one not two or three, just one!
  20. Age! I was never very good any any other sport, I loved rugby, but for what ever reason was put in as a forward when I should have been a back ... but still loved the game and was happy to play any position! Nothing ever came of it, no school team selections and so on. Athletics was mainly running, javelin and discus, and again no selections for his or that team. MA on the other hand was the only 'sport' I found I cold do well and when the session was over gave me a feeling of satisfaction and progress. I took to tournaments and started to bring home silverware. Then 'life' came along and I stopped training for an age. Now I've returned, I'm much older now, slower, but that feeling of achievement and the satisfaction is as strong now as it ever was ... just takes me longer to get the feeling in my legs back thats all!
  21. 1/12/14 Kata 150 push ups 150 sit ups. 150 squats 1 mile run. (so much for a slow down for the end of the year LOL!)
  22. He makes a good argument for a distinction between the kicks, but I only see one kick actually being done, but, one kick or not I see that kick being applied differently. One of the demonstrations is (to me) a kick I call a Knockdown mawashi geri. (The Round house kick) The kick by its downward angle 'drags' the opponent to the ground, where the other gains ground, pushes the opponent back and attacks the opponent in that same one action! Hence I say same kick different applications! (Makes me wonder if 'discussions' and so on back in the day was the birth place of splits in one system or another so giving us the various arts we have to choose form today!)
  23. Oh, for sure! They're a very tough bunch, and they incorporate face punches and grappling in their sparring, too, unlike some Kyokushin dojo. Thankfully, I've never felt like I've been in over my head when sparring with Kyokushin people--except in the fitness department! They can go forever! ... and people (namely the wife) wondered why when I decided to come back to MA that I did so only if the dojo was a Kyokushin school! I only got her agreement ... kind'a ... once I proved the limited face contact ...somehow I forgot to mention clicker combat ..ho hum! I seriously promote the idea of 'having a go' find a Kykushin dojo and train with us! You'll love it !
  24. cool! Thanks guys! Totally unexpected and greatly appreciated! Thanks for the trust, patience, time and votes! "I'd like to thank my mom, sensei, the dog and ... so on and so forth!" Roll on 2015! Yay! Osu!
  25. Hi Mtal, Welcome! Lets have a go at this... Yup! "I" call them '30 second psychos', the reasoning is simple .... ... is it a good idea? is it a good strategy in a fight? Nah! utterly pointless and serves only to offer you up for easy pickings! Maybe others do this, we do for sure in our dojo. We work on this as a potential situation in the real world. We work on prolonged attacks, beyond 30 seconds, and by that training we also work on prolonged defense against such an attacker! Basically the 'defender/victim' covers up moves around as best they can whilst blocking or evading the attack(s), be this they physically move an arm or leg to drive the punch or kick past them or deflect much/most of the power, or simply duck swivel and let the attack miss them! Over time they start to feel the reduction in power the slow down in the volume of attacks and so have the advantage .... they can gauge there opponent and prepare and be ready to return the 'favor' and close the matter as the victor! The attacker on the other hand is developing stamina, and working on there ability to hide (if that's the right or best word to use) how worn out they are becoming as they sustain the over long barrage! (Its a ability they cannot ever develop, and will always loose out to !) The attacker is trying to break the other guy down to end it in 30, 60 90 seconds, by not giving the other person a chance to attack... In the early 'fights' they do get the odd win, as the other guy work on evading and blocking at close range and so on, but it a short lived period of wins! The person who defends in a short period of time always wins! They wait, and wait and are much much fresher when the other is not and then they take over! Over time both are able to sustain long periods of attack or defense, but no matter what, the defender is always the victor!
