  1. Consider a review a little revise of your fighting style ... !change an idea! Normally when you attack you open with a: punch, maybe two and add a kick. or A low kick and add punches to mid and upper body or kick, knee punch or and so on and so on ... that sort of thing right? Do this instead... attack as defense defense as attack. When they punch your block the punch hard, smash the forearm with a solid fist. when they kick, kick the other leg, or block with a knee, trust me your knee will win any 'argument' with there toes! When you punch they block , follow it through hit the blocking arm or leg. (not knee ) when you kick, KICK hit whatever they put up to stop your kick. (not knee ) It sounds mad, I know it really does, but I'll add it really works! Practice it, have a guy punch at your mid-section 10-20 etc times, ask him to keep the same tempo and equal power, you are after all only practicing! As the punch comes in 'smash' his forearm in a block action to stop him hitting you! ... bet he doesn't get to the full 10 -20 or whatever strikes without stopping, or changing his speed or dropping his power! Now change to... He 'goes' to punch you, you strike out and punch his shoulder, stopping his a attack. He 'goes' to kick you, kick his standing leg a roundhouse type kick just make sure to sweep it up as you pass under him center!! Think of a block you do and see if you can attack with that block as the attack it is!Same for strikes same with a strike/punch ... if you hit his arm his wrist, his hand can you stop him hitting you!
  2. Hello Sapphire1166! hehehe I hear you! Like you I returned after an over long absence (a little more than you) ....mostly driven by my sons desire to do what 'dad did' when my old Gi fell out of a wardrobe one time. I put it on to show him what it looked like and ... had a little trouble doing the belt up! It was a 280cm belt, and used to hang down about mid point of my thigh ... not any more! Any GI is going to need modification I think, not many suppliers allow you to mix and match, and the few that do generally charge the earth for the privilege and are the upper end of the quality chain! So maybe a cheap/cheaper 180/190cm GI will do, with a few modifications, for now. Cut the Arms and Legs down that sort of thing, if you get a light weight suit it'll be easier to stitch up and keep a neat tidy appearance! Blitz and Shogun Gis (Here in the UK anyway) are a cheap and good generally! A search of eBay offers a Blitz Gi for £17.50 (About $25.00) Blitz Sport Adult Karate GI - I search with that term in https://www.ebay.com and found them on offer for $30! maybe be worth a look! Good luck and welcome back!
  3. ... I just realized something! (I've had it said to me because of what I do 'for fun' and at my age to boot) Were totally of out of our heads, with a dash of crazy mixed in for good measure! ... we (all of us by the way) consider all of this fun, and we (still all of us) actually go looking for more things like this crazy nuts'o stuff to do! Our excuse ... its fun! The Wolf Run looks cool, kinda like "extreme" cross country or something! ... less electrocution and torture involved it seems!
  4. Which is why I think the voice in the back of my mind says "arrogant!" If its an easy win and there is an honor code to be followed at some level on another, then there are two options. 1. End it fast. 2. Tap out. ... and so why I now wonder (as I consider the bout in a general way) if Pantangco was actually unable to hurt Rasner, a real case of "I've given him my best shots and he doesn't fall down, he's not phased by anything!" voice in his head goes " I need an exit plan!" Which is why I think it is more likely to me that Pantangco took what he felt was the honorable and best way out of the situation he found himself in! I think maybe I'd agree with this. ... which is a two way street, (as was mentioned before) so to this add the "amateur" fight status, could this simply be the Bushido honor code form his previous life in a traditional Martial Art. Anyone have any idea if Pantangco has any previous in another MA?
  5. Sometimes things happen they are called accidents, react accordingly in a word ... Humility. Your partner is only one rank above beginner, above you, it does not make them an expert or a person to trust as a 'teacher', that is your teachers job. I wonder if your teacher in saying to you you can get your own back if he actually meant for you to 'respond' in kind, as a vengeful action, or if he meant the comment to lighten the mood, a little diversion a joke/laugh? Don't be afraid to spar, and certainly do not be afraid to apologies open to them or your teacher. I don't mean prostrate yourself upon a torture rack or something, just be open honest and genuine about the incident and with your apology and seek to move on! Humility.
  6. Awesome its organized, legal ... torture!
  7. Ah yes let me clear that up, its more a spirit thing, rather than just win win and win some more! You are to try, you are to want to win, NOT cruise, but its more if you get knocked down, make sure you get back up again and carry on! ... spirit! Looking over the 'mudder' site this looks to be an American idea and the training video is one such contestant/local nut job/insane dude/complete mad man/ (insert your own classification) going through a simple day... Starting with a bucket of cold water on a winters day outside in his bear feet running to the gym to do some serious work! ... totally nuts, love it!
  8. I truly see what you are saying! Yes I agree, its a different mind set! I feel this had a massive influence on the way the fight was conducted! Nothing wrong in this, its the way its done, I get this I understand this I watch this and expected this! MMA has the other guy follow you to the floor .... 'ground and pound'! Boxing you 'punch' the other guy he goes down ... and a guy in a shirt counts to 10! Its a different mind set! Here I get the clear feeling that 'he' felt it important to be seen to do the 'right' thing, not the 'violent' thing! Maybe its me projecting how I do things, my feelings on to the fight. 'He' wanted to feel 'right' in himself so took the less aggressive way of dealing with the situation that was presented to him. Now don't get me wrong I also have a voice in the back of mind saying "isn't his behavior arrogant?" He was clearly the better fighter, his skill, ability, technical execution, training, fitness, stamina surpassed his opponent, so why not just end it quickly by doing what you came to do and with minimal risk to the other guy! How is his actions not an insult? ... like I say I truly see what you are saying! I just feel he really wanted a clear conscience! Like Rasner 'couldn't admit his failings, he was so hyped he could not see past the goal and glory', Pantangco could not see past ... what? ... an overconfidence, an ego, a bunch of pride that just could not deal with an easy win and how other might poke fun at him! I'd add a question to this, a third possibility if you will! Pantangco, for all his obvious skill, for all his obvious ability, had realized he wasn't and couldn't hurt Rasner! All punches, all his knees, all his kicks and yet Rasner kept coming back..maybe Rasner worked this out and was simply letting Pantangco run himself out before he actually ended the fight!
  9. You as well! Good luck, for the grading 'M'! My reasoning is much the same as you to be honest, but its not a 'to much to fit in or to much to do' concern. I see it as a way of adding to the training, it is after all excessive, stamina, character building and a certain upgrade to inner spirit. My worry is the injury risk, I already follow a specific art where major injury is a constant worry! The idea of doing a zip wire or wall climb and loosing a finger or breaking a bone that close to teh grading is not that appealing to be honest! I'm older now and although I may have started my MA journey when I was 18 ... that was a long time ago, and now I am on that final stretch to getting Shodan, I really don't want to mess it up! ( ... as always I can't speak to other systems grading, only my own) I'm told a Shodan grading is unofficially a week long affair, (you are watched all week) then you go for the 'grading' at the end of the week which is about 6 hrs long and is finished with knockdown bouts! One guy in the dojo explained that when it was over, he had 18 fights to get his Shodan! ... but still its looks totally insane and that is truly appealing! p.s. I normally go off roading in 4x4s, so to do something along them lines ... but without a car is just crazy! costs less fuel, jeez Ron90 petrol just tastes yuk!
  10. hehehe... Juts to be clear I have replied with a maybe! Sure it looks fun and the dates he has offered are 'warm' weather, ... but they are also close to a possible Shodan grading! ...we'll see, it does look totally nuts'o! gotta be honest!
  11. Awesome! well done! 5 is nothing at all to be sneezed at, nothing at all by a long way!
  12. I've been invited by a friend to join him and a few others as a team for this event next year! It looks mad and a huge amount of fun! I just had to share! https://toughmudder.co.uk/ Love the training video, and the training done gave me a few ideas as well.! Enjoy!
  13. hmm.. never been big on 'protein shakes' and the new 'Cheeseburger Diet' or whatever is in fashion .. I eat what I eat, I eat less of the fatty stuff, but i still eat a burger or kebab and I eat more of the healthy stuff, more chicken, tuna or fruit! The idea of counting calories, is ... well to me way to complicated! To me you eat you train, if the weight goes up you train more or eat less of something! Protein is higher on the menu that it used to be (more chicken more tuna) but to not over do it on the protein front, I wrap it up in some bread!
  14. I'm thinking of getting some bands, the big colorful ones (Look like the small ones you flicked around at school). To use them to enhance kicks (power, speed is a natural addition form this work) but more than that to enhance my core work. In the dojo I train at we use the 'big elastic bands' to add strength to our kicks (sometimes). I like the idea so want to get some to attach to my garage wall to do some kick work and core work. Did you get the bands you mention and try them, did you feel any difference?
  15. Please do not mis understand me, I'm not anti-footie, yes its true I much prefer Rugby, as I say less crying and more work. I'm happy to watch the national side compete, as much to do with national pride as it is to see the best of the best competing with each other! Its as you say truly beautiful to watch most times! ...but I feel compelled to laugh (laugh so hard I to cry) at the antics of these grown men falling over and grazing there knees on the grass as another payers shadow feel across them! or go somersaulting ...again...and again....and again...and again openly sobbing about the aerobatics when they final stop rolling that is! Its comical it truly is..
  16. GET RID OF HER IMMEDIATELY!! ..... who does she think she in 'Tony Stark?' Sorry this is pathetic, direct her to the door, open it, hand here all her dues she may have paid, and a letter that simply repeats you saying: "Thanks but no thanks." "feel free to train else wheer you are no longer allowed or welcome here". Blunt but more importantly open clear, and PUBLIC!
  17. ..a function answer...not considered that ! ... so I'll add to the question: So are were saying (with all other bits and bobs mentioned) its a cultural thing as much as its an ego thing then?
  18. It seems to be a world cup for the under dogs, many/most of the bigger teams have gone home and lesser teams are through... not a bad tournament IMO makes for a nice change.
  19. FC or not FC? Both have advantages the other does not, both give the student something that is needed and not covered in one or the other. You do need to do both I feel, each has merits that should not be ignored. Years ago the sport stuff was what I did in tournaments, in the dojo I train ed the same as the other guys, the full contact fighters, we all did the same stuff! All that differed (so I thought) was the emphasis of the fight the punch, the kick etc. When it came to sparring, they would pick me to spar with, the rule was I could go nuts on them they would not return the favor! I have to be honest I thought they did so as I was an easy win, so I made sure when we fought I simply was not there to be hit back, I would dance around them picking up points with ease and beat them every time. Thing was I later realized they were not looking for an easy win, they were looking to increase there reaction times and get faster, to see an attack and deal with it faster. In return I learned to move and when they caught me, to fall over with grace and not smash my head on the floor! Anyway, FC or not FC... Sport karate Full contact karate Or maybe TKD full contact http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLkc_wtRih8 Kung Fu full contact (Random sections for the first page returned)
