Knees from the clinch

Well since Thai fighters do clinching and knees,I would use it if the situation calls for it,however I'd rather be able to keep my opponent at distance then have to get that close.In a real situation,I'd rather take his knees out or at least sweep his feet. Of course this isn't always possible,so at times I'd probably do jabs,right cross,and if person throws a kick avoid it and then shoot in to get the clinch and start using knees or shoot in and flip him to ground and continue to wrestle from there. Grabbing a shirt in a fight is stupid,what if the shirt rips?Then he can get a hold of you.I'd rather grab the actual person then the shirt on him.Besides if you grab the person when in close quarters,you have better control of the situation,then if you grab any piece of clothing. If I want to use his clothing to fight then I'd only use his shirt to pull over his head so he can't see what is coming,but will definitely feel it.From there I could knee,upper cut,choke etc. -

I'm the same way,I also don't have a problem with clinching,but I'd also rather use my elbows if that close to the person. -
Ya well guess what,if you wouldn't bother with grappling in a real fight you're going to lose then.To fully be able to defend yourself in a real situation you must know how to fight both standing and on the ground otherwise the fight will be over as soon as you hit the ground,instead of you having a chance to still defend yourself. Besides 9 out of 10 times a fight goes and ends on the ground so might as well know some grappling.

Actually you're wrong,because most schools do very little or no full contact but instead do point sparring as they do in Goju.I did chose to fight continuous when I went to karate tournaments though,which is obviously harder then point.I now do full-contact. So what,if full contact hurts,it's going to hurt alot more without gloves on the street.You're there to learn to defend yourself and take punches.You're not there to learn to give up,no one has to do martial arts to learn how to give up,but you can do martial arts to help you.

Honestly I believe it is appropriate to experience different styles but ONLY if you have stuck to each one for at least 4-5yrs. don't stick to one for a couple months then switch on to another,because that won't get you any where except for an empty pocket.LOL I believe reality based self-defense systems exist because I do it,but I would still as most people do,call it a martial arts. It also depends what you consider a reality based self-defense system and what you expect from it.To me a reality based self-defense system is actually learning mixed non-traditional arts ,because it is the closest you'll come to a reality fight. I wouldn't consider a traditional art reality based self-defense because of all its useless katas and stances among other things. An art that specifically concentrates on street defense is the way to go. Such arts are like pankration or shoot fighting which do basically every thing you would do on the street such as kicking, punch, kneeing, elbows,etc.and grappling such as chokes,ankle locks,knee locks,arm bars etc.are the closest you'll come to a real fight. These arts are actually MuayThai and grappling(such as submission wrestling or jujitsu combined),that teach you techniques that work and you're also constantly sparring unlike most arts that do forms,point sparring,and weapons.Instead these arts do no forms, and instead of point sparring,we do full contact.

Not really,your body is as low as doing a half push up and holding it there except you're moving with the alligator walk,as far as extended push up,not really because you always have one hand pulled in tight,but a little to the side and other infront,and switch hands while walking.They hurt like hell,but still not as bad as doing duck walks if you know what they are. Oh ya,I remember those squat kicks,we did them when I used to do karate,I hated those too.

KSN Doug: Alligator walk is strange but not an easy exercise. For alligator walk ,your whole body is only a couple inches away from the floor,you have both hands in front of you,every time you move one hand is infront and the other is slightly to the side. It's hard to explain,but you if you know how an alligator walks,you'll understand what I mean ,this exercise is done same way as an alligator moves .

Another thing I forgot to mention is that we do frog leaps 3 sets of tens,that's easy though. What is hard is doing alligator walk,anyone here know what that is?Now that's tough. I don't know about you guys,but I also find half push ups are hard to do when you have to do 3 sets of 50 great for toning your chest muscles though.

What do you expect from martial arts,ballet type moves called katas or actual self-defense moves? If you want self-defense forget about all these traditional arts. Shotokan Karate does katas so forget about that,Hapkido I'm not sure what that art is like so I can't comment on that,Tae kwon do is a joke,because they also do katas,and most of their moves are based on kicks ,kicks,kicks and most if not all of those kicks are in the air,it's more show then effective. You want true self-defense or street-defense,there's pankration,shoot fighting,savate,muay thai kickboxing,boxing,judo,wrestling,jujitsu.The best are mixed martial arts styles like the first three I mentioned. So that's what you do if you want self-defense if you don't care for that ,and all you want is ballet type moves then go ahead and do traditional arts.

My favourite techniques are jab,cross,hook,low shin kicks,working my way in when I get the chance then grabbing person in a clinche,moving him around and throwing knees,then if needed take the person to ground and go on from there,with perhaps arm bar,leg lock or chokes. So share with me and others your favourite techniques.

How come none of you mention skipping,which is one of the toughest exercises one can do? I can understand you guys not doing shin kicks if you do traditional arts,because only muay thai or styles that include muay thai kicks do that.Doing several shin kicks is more painful then doing several front and back kicks,although we do that sometimes too.

If you joined martial arts for self-defense stop doing traditional arts,what you learn with those katas won't work in reality,they are hopeless. Join pankration or shoot fighting,based specifically for street-defense. If not interested in those artsi, buy pepper spray or a gun,depending on the gun rules of your country or just don't walk out at night. -

I do pankration,similar to your art,if not same.So I agree with you. After all shoot fighting and pankration win all UFC fights. -

I'd say my art Pankration or shootfighting would beat any traditional arts that does katas instead of concentrating specifically on self-defense and street-defense.After all these are two styles that always win in UFC. The best fighting arts are ones that combine stand up(muay thai)with grappling(submission wrestling or jujitsu) -
It's easy to break 3 boards if you use elbow or side kick.Just don't miss with your elbow and end up hitting funny bone,because trust me that hurts like hell,done it once before. Also depends how many times you've broken boards before and how good your concentration is,for me it was easy other then that one time when I hit my funny bone,that was because my boards were a little wet though.

You shouldn't assume.In a fight no one should assume anything just be aware. Just because a muay thai fighter fakes a kick doesn't mean his next move is going to be a punch sometimes another kick oposite side ,sometimes we'll work our way in even if we get hit around a bit,once we're in we can use our knees to stomache,chest or head and if having you in clinch will swing you around while kneeing you.Due to knee kicks,close range on a muay thai fighter is not bright. Also in countries that allow our elbow strikes it would be stupid for you to try and get us at close range.An elbow can knock someone out unconcious. We don't always kick to outside of leg either,we kick inner thigh or even ribs and head.So not all muay thai kicks are low kicks,most but not all. How can you get to outside of our kicks when we're always moving around,you think we stick to one spot when kicking,we move in circles when kicking. Besides did you ever think that maybe Muay Thai Fighters also know how to block kicks?

So you think blocking one of our muay thai kicks would be easy hey? It's not as easy as you may think. First of all muay thai kicks are extremely quick and aren't always that easy to block,so whoever told you guys it is,is wrong. Have you guys ever tried muay thai or been kicked by a muay thai fighter?Most times it is so quick you can't see it coming. It's funny how you guys think it's so easy when muay thai fighters are known to win 90% of the fights in tournaments and on street if they need to use it.

Pankration and Shoot fighting are good, both arts teach a combination of stand up(muay thai fighting)and grappling(submission wrestling----similar to jujitsu)however these arts are a more aggressive art unlike aikido,which I believe stands for peace and harmony right.Also if I'm correct Aikido is also an art that teaches fighting without actually fighting.Using one's momentum against himself. If what you want really has to be like aikido but with grappling, because you don't want anything aggressive then I would suggest small circle or brazilian jujitsu,wrestling or judo.
