No matter what martial arts school you go to you are expected to either wear their gi or t-shirt,as long as it is part of gym's uniform you must wear it so you can't complain about that.I don't feel sorry for you having to do push-ups.Would you wear a baseball cap while working in a restaurant? No,of course not,so how is it any different with martial arts school.Police officers have their own uniform too. However from the rest of what you have mentioned it just sounds like you need to go to a different gym,it has nothing to do with the style. MuayThai is the real deal for stand up,so it has to do with the school.

Vancouver,BC or Vancouver.U.S? I am from Vancouver,BC if you are looking for one in this area,I can help, because I have trained for several years at different schools. Currently I do Pankration,an art combining MuayThai with Submission Wrestling, but I fight MuayThai. It can be sort of expensive but well worth it,because you would be learning from a guy who knocked out his opponent in UFC. I pay $106.99 per month, but you can train 6 days a week unlike most schools. His name is Lance Gibson.I too train here.Checkout the school. http://www.gibsonpankration.com

Why are we so arrogant? That's because we can afford to since we win 9 out of 10x. You say you won against a muaythai fighter, well he was either new at muaythai or just simply sucked.Besides you are talking about one person only. In general MuayThai fighters can't be beat in stand up. The reason people consider MuayThai so effective is because it takes less time to become a good fighter then any art that waistes time with katas. Someone with as little as 6months to 1yr.experience in MuayThai can in general beat anyone with 3 or more years experience in karate and other traditional asian martial arts.

That's right we muaythai fighters kick @ass in stand up, but crappy on ground I'll be first to admit it. A muaythai fighter is terrible at grappling just as a grappler is terrible at stand up. You become good only in what you train in,however of all stand up martial arts we will win 9 out of 10x. If we have such a good track record for winning it must mean we are doing something right. MuayThai is THE BEST STAND UP art. You karate guys kick with top of foot and heel which is pointless,we kick with shins and knees, more effective way of kicking. Mix the two arts and you have an unbeatable art. I do Pankration which combines MuayThai and Grappling(Submission Wrestling). We do everything from jabs, right cross, hooks, upper cuts, shin kicks, knee kicks, elbow strikes, stand up neck wrestling, throws, flips, reversals, arm bars, leg locks, ankle locks, knee bars, wrist locks,to different kinds of chokes etc. We do the exact same stuff proven to win in UFC. Mixed styles are always the best especially if they include MuayThai.

any tipz for a newbie (sparring)
MuayThai Fighter replied to wckf_azn's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If the person he puts you against has 3.5 yrs experience in martial arts and is still only a yellow belt he must really suck,so you have nothing to worry about, just go in and kick his silly @ss. -
To bounce or not to bounce?

I tend to agree with thaiboxerken,I suppose it is because we're both thai boxers and so have same opinion. -
No offense to your sensei, but he seems like a fucking idiot, sounds like you know more then him. Get a new instructor is my first suggestion.A real instructor knows that training for power is not the most important thing, because with speed comes true power. You are correct in wanting speed and accuracy.Like you said what's the point of power if you have no speed or accuracy and your instructor should know that too.To me it sounds like you should be teaching him instead of him teaching you. To develope speed hit or kick the heavy bag as much as you can and as quickly as you can then as you advance try and kick even quicker, start off slow and work your way up.Take track of how many kicks you get up to each day. Also do lots of skipping, start off slow and as you get better skip faster and faster. Running around a track can help you not only get stronger legs but help you get quicker. For leg speed I'd say kicking the heavy bag is best, because you get quicker, tougher legs, better accuracy and keep fit all at same time. Once you got the speed you will have the power. Just remember:With speed comes power. Kicks are not the only thing for speed that is important, you should work towards being quick with your hands as well.

common mistakes in sparring
MuayThai Fighter replied to CTpizzaboy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
B.S. katas won't help with sparring, like sensei's tell their students.Sparring and katas are two different things. First of all katas are useless. You don't need katas to know how to sparr, what you need is more practice in sparring. To become a better sparrer, you have to spar on a consistant basis. Sparring makes you a better fighter. Katas just make you be someone who knows how to waist time with your martial arts. If katas are so good why is it,if anyone off the street were be able to enter a tournament to fight they would win, with no previous or current martial arts experience in traditional arts? Because katas do shit. Only traditional asian arts teach them and yet they do nothing. -
None of those moves would work, why? Well because they are all moves from typical traditional asian arts, which are pointless and not meant for sparring.

if someone pulled a gun on you
MuayThai Fighter replied to sansoouser's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That would be a smart decision and same one I would make. -
No offense bud,but you don't have a freaking clue what you are talking about. It is not true that the bigger a person is the less accurate it is to hit his pressure points.I have no idea where you got this B.S from, who ever taught you this needs a new job and I suggest you get a new sensei. The whole point of pressure points being taught in martial arts originally was to be able to control a person of any size with little or no effort, but now days it is also taught to be able to knock a person out.

What is the purpose of Martial Arts
MuayThai Fighter replied to Hannibal's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I believe everybody has their different thoughts about martial arts and reasons for joining but that doesn't change the fact that martial arts was and is meant for self-defense/combat. What is martial arts to me: 1/ A way of training in street -defense 2/A way of gaining confidence and building self-esteem 3/A great and exciting way to keep fit 4/Something that allows me to get rid of everyday stress through vigorous exercises and harsh training in self-defense and sparring. 5/A feeling of expression without waisting time with forms(katas) that most styles have. 6/A great way of learning discipline 7/Also a great way to practice balance,co-ordination,focus,build stamina without having to go through doing forms. To me these are what make a true martial arts and will make a true fighter which is the main reason for martial arts.Without any of these you simply are just nothing but a martial arts wannabe. Any art that teaches forms is not a real martial arts, as far as I am concerned it is just another form of ballet. -
What is the purpose of Martial Arts
MuayThai Fighter replied to Hannibal's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I totally agree,100%,it's about high time I see someone on here that feels the exact same way I do. I also agree with the person who started the thread in url you posted. -
Well if you mean someone grabbing you from behind I know a move you can do,but depends to what extent you want to go to. For me if someone grabs me from behind, turn your body inwards, have one arm go over his arm and underneath then with both hands grab his wrist.Make sure his elbow is locked inside where your arm bends, push down his arm with your weight on his wrist and his elbow will go snap. Trust me I know it works. Now if you mean choking instead of grabbing your throat from behind then tuck in your chin as his arm slightly loosens up,grab his fingers and while spinning to 45 degrees grab his arm, once to side of his body bend his arm backwards, and use both hands on his wrist, stick your foot behind him and use your weight to push down on his arm if he is bigger then you and he will trip on your leg and now you are free.

Fastest For Self Defense
MuayThai Fighter replied to HulkHogan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Pankration: It's meant to take out your opponent as quickly as possible.Go in hard and finish fast.Every move has another move for back up incase you fail with one technique. Pankration I'd say is the quickest because of its unequal techniques: Jabs Right cross Hooks Upper cuts Shin kicks Knee kicks Neck Wrestling Elbow strikes Flips Throws Arm bars Shoulder lock Knee bar Ankle locks Wrist locks Neck cranks Reversals Chokes: Triangle chokes Reverse Chokes etc. -
if someone pulled a gun on you
MuayThai Fighter replied to sansoouser's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I cannot believe how full of shit everyone of you guys are, you'd all stay still. You would give them what they want, you wouldn't fight them. You would have to be plain stupid to fight someone with a gun. First of all most people regardless of martial arts training would freeze if someone pulled a gun it's only normal to have that kind of reaction. You'd be shitting your pants. Most styles may teach some knife defense, but most styles don't teach gun defense.Even then you can't block bullets or catch them, that is only in the movies. Second, you got to remember you can run,but a bullet fired can still hit you from quite a distance. If a person really wants to fire that gun,all it takes is one flick of that trigger and you can kiss your ass good bye. Take even one step forward and if he pulls the trigger you are dead and you won't have enough time to run or hide anyways. If you guys honestly think you would have enough time to run, duck or fight a guy with a gun,you have to be pretty damn stupid no offense. If a guy is reaching for a gun yes you could fight him by kicking him in nuts so hard he won't be able to do anything but gasp for air,but most guys with a gun who plan on using it will already have it in their hands, unless they are plain stupid. The chances of that would be 1 in a million for anyone having a gun on them. -
I'd have to disagree, his weight would have nothing to do with UFC after all Royce Gracie wasn't exactly that big, infact he was scrawny himself and beat every guy bigger then him in the ring but one I believe. I think Bruce Lee would have lost because he didn't have close to even half the skills these UFC guys have. Despite what we have seen of him in movies and what we've heard of him, when it comes down to it Bruce Lee was just an actor who happened to know martial arts.I really doubt he was as good as we have all been made to believe. Bruce Lee as far as I am concerned was the best martial arts actor, but he was definitely no God and no real great martial artist. The only reason his style Jeet Kune Do that he created still exists and is well known even after his death is because of his popularity as a martial arts actor. I am not saying all martial arts actors are like that, but most of them are no more then just actors.Very few of these martial arts actors that you see in movies are really that good in real life too.

I agree to an extent. My school has teaches technique class for wrestling part of the class and other part sparrs in wrestling on mondays.Tuesdays are going over MuayThai techniques first part of class and sparring in Wrestling for other part of the Pankration class. On Wednesdays is Sparring MuayThai only and Thursdays is sparring Pankration.Fridays are straight boxing and Saturdays is fight class (option to fight submission wrestling, muay thai, pankration, or work on fighting skills on dummy or heavy bag). Most chose to fight Pankration on Saturdays. We have sparring in almost every class, although part of most classes will also work on techniques first. before getting into sparring. In each class, when we work on techniques it is always on focus mitts, kicking shields, thai pads, sometimes heavy bag,and on partner. All techniques in school done full power except for sparring in wrestling. checkout my school of training: http://www.gibsonpankration.com

The belt is in the ring
MuayThai Fighter replied to MuayThai Fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
From what you tell me it doesn't sound like you do Traditional Martial Arts since you have never done kata and always do full contact sparring. I never said if you're not willing to step in ring you shouldn't do Martial Arts, what I did say was that in my opinion katas are useless for self-defense purposes and if that's why you are doing martial arts then the ring is the only way to really test your abilities. Self-defense is why I do martial arts that is why katas are useless to me and why only the ring is any good for me to test my worth. No shit sherlock,of course not fighting in the ring doesn't mean you can't handle yourself in the street,as I pointed out some streetfighters can beat up martial artists because there is a huge difference between a fight for martial arts and fighting for the street. However a person who fights in ring may have a bit of an advantage, but no guarantee he will win, there is no guarantees in life.. You're misunderstanding my whole point as people here I feel are.My point is the ring is the closest you can get to the real thing, and best way to test your martial arts.I didn't once say it was exactly the same as the real thing. Besides this thread is about the ring ,so if you don't like hearing anything about the comparisons of ring and traditionalists who do kata then you are in the wrong thread. I started this place to get people's point of view about what I said about the real test being in the ring, and obviously I don't expect everyone or anyone to agree with me.Unfortunately some people get ticked off hearing what I'm saying, and some think I am trying to start a fight. If you don't like my point of view and aren't willing to give yours, whether I agree or not, then go somewhere else,I'm not stopping you or anyone else. This thread would be boring if everyone agreed with me,and didn't have their own opinions, and reason, there would be nothing to discuss.I'm glad some people are disagreeing with my opinion and giving their reasons, just as I have my own reasons, except it or go to a different thread. -
Why would it make you suspicious? Many people study more then one martial arts style ,and later mix together everything of what they have learnt ,sometimes even to create their own style,so why would it be so hard to believe that a school that teaches two styles is real? I am trying to create my own style using Muay Thai,Submission Wrestling,Karate self-defense(without any forms),it's not like I don't have experience in any of these arts.I even plan to perhaps add more later on,because I do want to take up some other styles, such as aikido, judo, and kali. Would this mean I'm creating a Mcdojo? I definitely don't think so.

Well, the difference is that the modern teachers of karate got it from the teachers that were themselves taught by the masters in direct descent. It was not like the karate masters died and nobody did karate for 500 years, then some people started fighting and called it karate because they used the same rules and similar techniques as the masters 500 years ago. But as I said, I may not know all there is to Pankration, maybe there is a line of instructors who have been doing it for all the centuries from ancient Greek, via Roman people, all the way up till today? My intention was never to put Pankration down in any way - I know it is a good fighting style. I was just talking about direct descent from a person to a person to a person beginning in ancient Greek and going unbroken until today. Because such a link doesn't exist, the people who train in Pankration make it up from what's available today, i.e. MT, SW and so on. I was informing RAZOR here on the points that I thought he got wrong. Well I believe that since Pankration hasn't been taught for centuries until now the only direct link to the teachers of Pankration are found papers on how the teachers taught it back then in Greece,so basically it does still have a direct link. I could ask my instructor for you, just to make sure because he would know more about it then me.
