Hey all. A little help needed
ninjanurse replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree that we as Black Belts need to step up to the plate and talk with our peers about these things-especially when it is affecting new students. Grumbling behind their backs is not effective and only leads to more discontent. However, those that set the example will be taken more seriously than those that don't. -
What are some useful games for kids?

These are all great drills. I already do several of them in my classes but now have a few new ones to add! -
Why Did You Open a School?
ninjanurse replied to scottnshelly's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I opened my school in order to bring the gift of martial arts to a community lacking in programs to teach value and respect. I think everyone should have the opportunity to learn martial arts regardless of where they live or how much money they have so I keep my rates low (enough to cover expenses). -
How Long Have You Been Studying Martial Arts?
ninjanurse replied to Sohan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My journey began 29 years ago....and what a journey it has been! -
I believe that forms develop not only the external martial artist but also the internal one. Perserverance, self-control, self-discipline, modesty, respect, integrity, indomitable spirit-all qualities that can be developed in yourself and your students. They are the focus of most of my training as no matter how many times I have done one I can always improve on it and learn something about myself.

There is a lot of ego running around at that school-I have seen it myself. Nothing we can do about it but set the best example of humility and respect we can in hopes that they start to get it. Students/instructors who show another side of themselves when the "cat is away" show their true colors and need some more time climbing Maslow's mountain. -
Korean Art Kicks
ninjanurse replied to Kajukenbopr's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
It is true that many schools do not, but I think it depends on the school you attend as I have always drilled knees strikes and hammerfists, etc., in the TKD schools I have attended and I have in turn implemented these drills in my school. -
Shodan and Applying Zen Principles into Karate and Life
ninjanurse replied to RokuEmpi's topic in Karate
Good article! How difficult it is sometimes to bring a student along far enough for them to even catch a glimpse of the ox! -
Belt testing fees are a controversial subject indeed. I have seen it all through my travels and have a definite opinion on this. We (as instructors) expect our students to work hard and be sharp and they pay us (in most cases) for our guidance and knowledge. I don't feel it is justified to charge a student for a kyu grading that generally takes place in class during daily training-I'm not in it for the testing fees! Black Belt grading is another story as this usually takes place outside of class, involves registration through one or more organizations, and often includes visiting Masters, etc. Now having said that: I charge my students what my Master Instructor charges me for a belt and certificate. Nothing more.

training with higher ranks
ninjanurse replied to younwhadoug's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Maybe they are not living by the same 6 training principles that you are and that makes you the better martial artist regardless of your rank I say train for yourself...its your journey not theirs. -
Changing the path chages the experience and hence the outcome so embrace your destiny and learn from your mis-steps rather than wish to change the journey.

More 'Taekwondance'
ninjanurse replied to Kill Jill's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
It is drama pure and simple using martial arts as a medium to convey a story...kinda like the martial arts movies produced and seen by millions today. -
This too is my sentiment however, the question of quality of technique is valid. I would not award a BB to a student who was physically unable to perform however I would allow that student to modify their techniques ( given their physical/mental challenges) as long as they were valid . Sloppiness/or laziness is a reflection of the afformentioned requirements so therefore they would not have met them anyway.

just a question about TKD

TKD tournaments do allow kicks to the head and....its my favorite target when people fight with their hands down!!!! -
TaeKwonDo???
ninjanurse replied to isshinryu5toforever's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I suppose that depends on what you have in mind for the ranking. If you intend to teach TKD, you may want to hold an official rank but if you just want to continue to compete (and presumably do not need an "official rank") then I'd say why? Just learning a few forms needed for BB doesn't really mean you have learned the art...and yes, most forms are easy to imitate when you have had several years of "martial arts"...so you may want to formally study and come up through the ranks in that respect. I guess you have to decide who would benefit and take it from there. -

What styles support aerobics?
ninjanurse replied to Morris Ageen's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Ditto Laurie! TKD or wushu would be excellent choices as would any school that has and XMA curriculum. I was originally a Shotokan practitioner who took up TKD to improve cardio and flexibility for kumite. I became hooked and 14 years later am still a TKD fan! WTFl TKD is a blend of both worlds for me!
