  1. Thank you for the kind words everyone! It certainly has been a pleasure and I am looking forward to another 10.....you guys are stuck with me!!!
  2. Sounds great-I hope it works out for both of you!!
  3. Welcome Sappy! Looking forward to your contributions to KF!!!
  4. Karate Forums has solid community members that make it great by their contributions and comittment to keeping the standards high....the same as any reputable dojo!
  5. The technical modifications in stances for sport poomsae can be quite challenging-especially for us "old timers" who are used to a much wider stance. I prefer to teach my students a wide base when they start but if they are interested in WTF competition we make adaptations.
  6. I never take away that which was earned...but I will not advance a student who cannot uphold the responsibilities of their rank and the expectations of the dojo.
  7. Small Circle Jujitsu was created by Prof. Wally Jay-a viable self defense system with valid results. Carl Beaver studied under Prof. Jay and founded Jujtisu America along with Jay and Willy Cahill-a Judoka. Ed Melough is listed on the Jijitsu America website as a certified Jujitsi America Instructor-he is apparently Michael Chahill's instructor so I see a valid lineage here. It would be a great opportunity to learn Small Circle...you should check it out!
  8. If memory serves me correctly, I believe all Palgwe forms start and end in the same spot-as do Taegeuk's 2-8, however Taeguek Il Jang (1) is the only colored belt Taeguek form that does not-there is absolutely no way it works! Taegeuk 1 I still have issues with, getting it on the line. But I've seen videos where it does appear to end where it starts. As for the Palgwes, I'm having no luck with them. But, I will say this; starting and ending on the same spot in a form is not, and never really has been, a major point of concern for me. What is, is developing correct technique and sufficient power in the techniques of the forms to make them effective and useful. Footwork and stances are part of that, of course, but when it comes down to self-defense, the starting and ending point of a form is really irrelevant to that. But, since I am trying to learn and improve myself, taking on this task of sharpening up the forms as such adds another dimension to focus on. The only way it works is if you "cheat" on the stances-if you watch some videos you can see them adjusting to make it work. If you pivot correctly and have consistent stances you will not be able to do it. Of note is that Taegeuk Il Jang is the only Taegeuk form NOT used in competition-quite possibly because of this, as part of the scoring is based on beginning and ending in the same place.

  10. All grades 1st-9th Dan compete in the same age group so you can have a 50 year old 1st Dan competing against a 50 year old 5th Dan.
  11. No, won't be adding it-I already have a full complement of forms. Just a personal challenge !!! As for WTF-I agree, why have them assigned to ranks???? They go by age groups-the older you are the more poomsae you will have to know but your dan ranking is irrelevant. It does make the competition very challenging-you never know which 2 you will have to perform until about 2 weeks before the tournament. I only teach poomsae above rank when they are serious about competing-otherwise I stick to the usual progression and match Poomsae to dan ranking.
  12. Based on your description here I did some investigating and I will have to say I am intrigued with this form! It is very "karate" like in it's execution and appeals to my background more than the WTF Black Belt Forms-which are not as dynamic (while I presently teach a WTF based system I include some older poomsae & kata in my Black Belt curriculum for this reason, i.e, Chong Moo, Kanku Dai, etc). Hence, I have taken it on....to add to my "library" of forms...and I am quite enjoying it! Thanks!
  13. Of note: WTF Black Belts 1st Dan and up who choose to compete in Sport Poomsae must learn all Black Belt Patterns through Unsu...it is a daunting task for a new Shodan. I will agree that the patterns are short but the details are challenging.
  14. These days you have to let the parents watch class (for liability AND building trust) however they can be very distracting to the students. Most of my parents feel comfortable leaving their kids with me for classes-those that choose to stay and watch have to follow the same rules the kids do....no talking during class unless they raise their hand!
