  1. I recently came back to martial arts after a 3 year hiatus to have my wrist rebuilt. I was absolutely miserable not being able to train and couldn't even watch MA on tv or read my trade journals because I thought I would never be able to go back. I will never be able to do all the things I used to but I'm back.... and HAPPY!!! Once it is part of your life you just can't get away from it!!!!
  2. I'm way too old to work on it anymore....besides I have really become attached to my fully functional knees !!!!!
  3. In that case I think that black belt did a very dishonorable thing by fighting at his lower rank. It should never be allowed but it runs rampant at tournaments.
  4. Regardless of the style of Martial Art (and yes, Tai Chi is a martial art!) it still comes down to PRACTICE!
  5. I am in a unique position. I have been honored by my new school to be allowed to wear my rank-which is in the same art (TKD), but different system. The task before me seems great-to learn an new set of forms, a new system of instruction, and a new style within (Kung Fu), as well as earn the respect of my fellow students and seniors. While I am allowed to wear my rank I could never place my self "above" * any student there until I accomplish these tasks and test for ranking. *Not that I ever place myself above anybody..its just a manner of speaking. Thanks for the support Laurie!!!!!!
  6. I have 2 comments here: Basics are basics no matter what style or system you study. Alot of schools will take your past experience into consideration and allow you to test sooner or double grade-depending on your skill level. I wouldn't think of it as starting over...you are just making a new beginning and furthering your martial arts training in a different way. No one can ever take away what you have already learned.
  7. "Karate" is an Americanization of Martial Arts and will get more response from JQ public. But does it really matter what is on the sign.....?
  8. I studied an art based on the Dan Zan Ryu system. Very traditional!! Many great JuJitsu masters come from this system. Do an internet search and you will find many good sites.
  9. I don't think that either can be classified as better...I think that it all depends on the individual and why they study martial arts. Both can be of equal benefit depending on your position. Not all martial artists study so they can go to tournaments and "fight"....after all that is not the original intent of martial arts in the first place. JMHO
  10. I too am disappointed by the comments about Martial Artists in wheelchairs . I have personally had experience with a Jujitsu student who was paralyzed from the waist down who could kick *** in class. You don't need your legs to defend yourself and if you think otherwise you're not a true student of the arts. I hope you never find yourself in a position to have suffered injury to your legs in a fight .... That's my 2 cents worth!!
  11. There are 2 schools of thought on this: Traditional-only use Korean/Japanese so as not to confuse beginners Modern-only use English so as not to confuse beginners Well, I opt for a third, the Modern Traditional school of thought-use both terms (english and korean/japanese) so that the beginner relates the two and won't be confused when talking with other MA's or visiting other schools. I don't think any school of thought is better than the others-just differences in philosophy and style .
  12. Welcome to the forums! A lot of good people hang around here!
  13. Welcome! I hope you enjoy the forums-I do!!
  14. Relationships happen!!!! Just keep it respectful in the dojang and set a good example for others in the same position.
  15. I would rather be alive and in jail than dead and in the ground!!! Seriously though it sounds like another Urban Legend in the making. Law enforcement is full of officers who make ridiculous statements in arrogance and ignorance. If you have a true legal concern investigate the laws of your state; then continue to train your body and mind for the next time when it could be a matter of life and death!
  16. It may be wise to rest and then start a finger/hand strengthening program before resuming fingertip pushups. Arthritis in your later years is not a fun thing for a martial artist to deal with-I know from experience!!!
  17. Pounding walls, bricks, floor, sand, nails, makiwara, etc. But thats just the physical aspect..there are techniques to learn also. Find a competent teacher so you don't put your hands and wrists at risk!
