Why to young to start?
ninjanurse replied to SoulAssassin's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
3 year olds are capable of learning how to control their body and their mouth in a karate class just like they do at home. Building a good foundation using the tenets and basic skills will help them in life wether they continue in the martial arts or not. I'm all for startin' em young...makes teaching them when they are older much more of a pleasure and it is great to watch them grow up into a fine martial artist! -
Skip the pork rinds, but pass the Guiness!!!!!!

It sounds to me like this person has little self-esteem and is struggling with self-respect, let alone respect for others. I know it is difficult having these kind of students in your classes (both from a students and instructors point of view) but I tend to feel that these are the people that need the mental and emotional aspects of martial arts the most-not necessarily the physical. Respect is something that you earn by giving respect to others-a very difficult concept for some to accept. Unfortunately we live in a society that thrives on a pecking order of sorts and the traditional values of love, kindness, respect, etc. have been replaced with a "me" attitude (I am speaking in general here, not stating that all people feel this way). Low self-esteem is a big problem and she may feel that her rank makes her important rather than who she really is. Spending her life at the dojo may be all the life she has right now and it makes her feel useful and important. As difficult as it is to stomach, she should be treated with respect because of who she is not what she is and hopefully one day she will "get it". I am a firm believer in the concept that one does not command or demand respect because they have a certain colored belt or have studied x number of years. They earn respect by giving others respect period. What better teacher is there than one who treats his/her students with respect and leads by example? Afterall we want them to do as we do, not as we say-right? I don't feel that you were being dis-respectful at all and I wouldn't get my undies all in a bunch about it. One of my TKD teachers used to say this: The definition of a mature mind is to give without remembering and to receive without forgetting. Some people are just more mature than others period! Sorry for the rambling, you pegged me right!!!! -

We also do as Maestro's school. Apply the tenet to daily life and relate stories about how it has positively affected your or other's lives. A great way to end class-especially for kids! -

Instructors !!!! I got a quarstion
ninjanurse replied to Smith amp Wesson's topic in Instructors and School Owners
There is no defense needed. Each technique requires thousands upon thousands of repetitions to just know it. If you had it your way you would only be shown one technique in your whole life and you'd do it over and over and over because you'll never perfect it and there will be no reason to teach you another. We are not there to watch you practice we are there to teach you new techniques and critique old ones. It's your job as a student to go home and practice. The key is self-discipline and respect for your art and your instructors. Insulting them is not the way to become a martial artist. -

Tang Soo Do - Ranking System
ninjanurse replied to SoulAssassin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Oh! By the way...what do you think about using yellow for the tigers? They get "demoted" to orange when they go up to jr's and have to earn yellow all over again. ????? Seems like a bummer to me. -

We used camo belts in our little kids programs!!! I never seen them used anywhere else. -
I broke my toe once sparring with a girl from another school. We were both in our teens. Many years later we both ended up at a different school studying TKD and it turns out that she broke a toe in the same match!!! We had a great laugh about it!!!!

Boards vs. Brick
ninjanurse replied to SandanPJ's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I have had to break bricks for each dan test I have taken. You break 1 for shodan, 2 (together) for nedan, 3 (together) for sandan, etc. 3 was enough for me!!!!!! I used palm strike for all the breaks, some people used elbow strikes We also broke boards with jump kicks and spinning kicks in rapid succession but only with one board thick. When I studied TSD many years ago we broke with 2 boards for green belt. -
Just wait!!!! You'll be laughing too!!!!!
