My old school had a six month probationary period. The BB test fee included 6months of tuition and the student received a plain black belt. After the 6 months, if the BB attended and taught regularly, he/she received their association BB with name, etc. on it. They almost always stayed after that.

What do you think is the best "self defense" weapo
ninjanurse replied to Withers M.A.A.'s topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I have a small jitte-personally machined for me by a student to fit my small size. I have never had to use it. If I could carry a firearm I would. -
Yes they were....but that is another story.

Did you know that a majority of the oil fields in Iraq are owned by FRANCE? Did you know that several US oil companies DO NOT get their oil from IRAQ? Preserving the oil wells in Iraq is vital for the people that live there (environmentally and economically) and US motives may not be as selfish as you think.

Didn't realise there was such a massive link between the Freemasons and the USA The seal of King David and King Soloman is also linked to the fact that our country was founded on biblical principals. Did you know that the founding fathers considered having Hebrew be the official language of the new colonies?

WTF TKD forms Applications?
ninjanurse replied to Karateka_latino's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Absolutely!!! All movements of all forms have application. WTF, in my experience,is no different that ITF, Shotokan, etc. in their aproach to bunkai however, not all instructors teach it in the same way. Some merely explain it, some may actually demonstrate each technique. I prefer to set up multiple attackers (one one each direction) and have them attack as the student performs the form-sort of an extended one step. This also helps the attackers learn the form from the outside in and is of great benefit to all. -

In my experience, all vowels are pronounced and are similar to the sounds in spanish. The vowel "Y" is not pronounced but is part of the vowel after it so that it is not a separate syllable.

Clean Dojo vs. Gritty "Rocky IV" Training
ninjanurse replied to amp's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I remember days of polishing wood dojo floors and walls...ahhh! -
Whew!!! Is it getting hot in here? It is important to revere your ancestors and pass down the art as it was taught to you or the art that you love may die out. Please respect those that respect tradition and are striving to keep their chosen art pure. Kata has MANY applications the most recently mentioned being development of muscle memory. Muscle memory allows you to free your mind and react without thinking-a true skill of self-defense and important in any "street fight" (or sparring match for that matter).

My TKD school only did olympic style sparring (high kicks, etc) on rare occasions (although many Olympic team members came from my school's association)..we mostly trained to be able to spar in open tournaments with all styles. Targets of opportunity with finishing techniques were always taught in drills and class matches-practical and efficient, not flashy or high. Just because a school teaches TKD does not means that it should be assumed that they teach high, flashy, and impractical techniques to their students. TKd is a lot more traditional and diverse than some realise.

Got a qeustion for all you instructors.
ninjanurse replied to BKJ1216's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Very true Crash!!! I always advocate checking schools out in person but I would be suspect after having an evasive conversation on the phone. I am not one to try to find the cheapest deal either-you definitely get what you pay for and sometimes a whole lot more. -
As a small woman (113lbs) I have experienced competition and practice with people of all sizes and weights and have never found it to be a disadvantage other than it hurts more when a big guy hits you (my theory-don't get hit! ). I have grappled many strong people and can use my size and knowledge of counters and center of gravity to keep from being "killed". I have also been a law enforcement officer and have never been at a disadvantage because of my size/weight. Proper use of leverage and joint locks have allowed me to physically detain large men without difficulty and affect many challenging arrests. This being said...I do believe that there are people out there (trained or untrained) that could kick my butt under the right circumstances and it would definitely be better if I weighed more and was stronger....hopefully I will never put myself in a position were that would happen. In the meantime I keep on training!

Definitely a marketing thing...like a car salesman. Get'em into the school and go for the throat!!!! Personally, if he can't be honest with me on the phone and answer my questions forthright I question his character and would be suspicious of his credentials. Honesty is always the best policy!
