  1. To put it in easy terms, Ki (or chi) is the energy you put into your techniques that originates from inside you. It takes a while to learn how to use it.
  2. The key word in PM is "private"...maybe someone else on the forum has an opinion or comment for S&W so why make it private ?
  3. Old school (TKD): white orange yellow green purple blue blue 1 brown brown 1 red red 1 red/black (BB candidate) New school (TKD): white orange (kids only) yellow green blue blue w/stripe brown brown w/stripe red red w/stripe
  4. General guidelines should bet set forth for each gup however students should not be promoted unless they meet the requirements and know the curriculum. Also, as each student is different, the expectations should be individualized but the requirements should remain unchanged. If a student progresses faster I see no reason why they cannot be double graded at the lower belt levels. Generally the higher the gup the longer the time between gradings. Sorry for the run-on paragraph !!!!
  5. I agree with Fury...try to involve family! My whole fam studies...makes for good common ground with teenagers!!!! As far as attendance goes...2-3 a week for beginners is the norm to avoid burn-out, etc. Once you become an advanced student your school may have a minimum requirement such as 4. Those training for BB testing can be required to attend 5 days with additional training on off days. Have fun...keep it fun!
  6. Darn those instructors...always watching students! What nerve!!! Good luck Laurie!!!!!!!
  7. Since I am a Vegan I like all veggie dishes-escpecially spicey ones! I also like lo mein, tofu, and rice and Mu Shu sauce. Anyone here like Vietnamese food? Now there's some good eatin'!!!
  8. I thought you might be but wasn't sure...it could be either way.
  9. Into the wall..that depends on what you do to me. Off the roof...GOODBYE (but hopefully I can take you with me too!!!! )!!
  10. Welcome! Sounds like you would like Tae Kwon Do (lots of fancy spinning kicks) or Tang So Do (not so many spinning kicks but more than karate). Shop around and sit in on classs before making a decision!
  11. I am partial to Choo Moo #4, which is a BB form we used at my former TKD school. I am not sure of it's origins but it is very cool!!
  12. Do you expect to be perfect before you use your art? If so, yes..you'll die before you get to use what you have paid for. What a shame!
  13. Spinninggumby has stated it well. I couldn't agree more! "kung yeht" Gumby!!
  14. Never did a "V" but we did do a semi-circle against a wall (or pretend edge of a roof). You stood with your back against the wall (or on the edge) and the "attackers" made a semi-circle around you. They would start out one at a time adding multiple attackers as the exercise progressed. Weapons were added in BB classes. A variation of this exercise is used on the 2nd and 3rd dan test-but you can only use techniques that are part of the kyu curriculum.
  15. Good post Jerry! I use different kiap's for different techniques and I get some strange looks and giggles sometimes. Certain sounds just seem to make the technique better! What can you compare the "Golden Gorilla" to so I might have an idea of what the sound is?
  16. I am 5'3 and weigh 115 lbs....and I wear a 3 or 4 (depending on style). I think a 4 or 5 would be too small for you! I would go to a 6 and shorten the pants if you need to. I think they even come in 7 and 8-check out Century. Don't train at a school that doesn't respect you as a person and is more concerned about how their students look! Welcome to the martial arts family!
