  1. Here's my 2 cents: 1. If you already have martial arts training in kata, then learning a new styles forms will be easier for you. 2. Having taught in several different styles I can say that I have not found that students have any more difficulty learning forms in any one style than the other.
  2. Not me but here's a link to another thread about Goju Ryu. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=19001&highlight=goju+ryu
  3. I'm not really qualified to answer that. I suggest a chiropractor (if you are in to that) or an MD/DO.
  4. Oh can I relate!!!! I have arthritis in my knees, wrists, ankles, back...you name it. All from years of pounding bags, boards, bricks, etc. I have a good doc who understands my passions and while he is supportive he is also realistic..."You can't keep putting your hand in boiling water!" is his favorite quote . Presently I am recovering from a surgery to correct an arthritic condition in my knee just so that I can continue to snowboard and train....but I also know that I must modify my training to protect my joints, i.e., less jumping, biking instead of running, skip the heavy bags and use lighter targets, no breaking with the hands, keep it low in the half-pipe, etc. It took some convincing but I am ready to give up a few things now so that I don't have to give up other things later. Oh ya...here's another thread on a related topic. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=19704
  5. Basic Diet Guidelines: -Eliminate as much fat as possible -Keep protein to 40-60 gms per day* -Eat enough complex carbs to fuel your workouts. -Drink plenty of water every day *unless you are going for bulk but otherwise you don't need more than this to maintain and repair muscle.
  6. Could be a tear or a nerve that is too close and gets impinged when you stretch. If it is painful you shouldn't push it and you may want to have it checked out by a doctor. If it were me, I would ice it everyday for a few weeks, let it heal, and try again gently. Some tears take several months to heal...I had a hamstring tear that took almost 2 years!
  7. One of the things we do is at our school is starting at yellow belt we have the students bounce their heads off the mat with each sit-up or crunch. In theory...maybe, in practice...I'm not sure. Some people just can't take a hit to the head period.
  8. In most dojo's...not a good idea to just leave class. It is much better to ask first & then bow out.. But it seems he told you to rest when you wanted to so I wouldn't worry about it now. If it really concerns you ask him before the next class if he prefers you bow out first.
  9. When I studied Moo Duk Kwan higher belt testing was done by video as the instructor we had was only a 2nd dan. The video went off and in a few weeks results were announced.
  10. Did a brief search found A LOT of kenpo threads but nothing too specific for this topic. You might want to check some of them out though...some looked quite interesting.
  11. Wow Danni...congrats on starting classes!! As far as ettiquette goes there is a lot of it but you will catch on fast. Each dojo is different but there are a few of the most common rules I have come across: - bow when leaving or entering the training floor/dojo - bow to Black Belts and senior students - bow when spoken to - bow to Flag/founder of system before and after class - bow to training partner before and after training At our school we bow whenever we speak or move or turn away from the instructor. A lot of bowing going on there! I am sure that after a few classes you will figure it out and soon it will be second nature. What style are you studying?
  12. Graham crackers with chocolate and marshmallow in between.....warmed up in the fire until it's all gooey and sticky!!!!!!! You can do it in the microwave too if you don't happen to have a fire ! Sorry Kicks...had to answer, now I have to have one!!!!
  13. I did a quick serach and came up empty. I'll keep my eyes and ears open though!
  14. I have an elliptical trainer and I find that I don't get a full leg workout like running but the cardio is great!!!!
  15. The only thing convalescing is my knee. I will be unable to kick and jump for quite some time so I am taking the opportunity to study. It is offered at my school along with the main style and is "required study" for 4th degree and up anyway. There's no time like the present!
  16. Any activity that gets your heartrate up for at least 20 minutes is good. I enjoy running...inside or outside (preferably outside!) so it sounds good to me!
  17. In almost all the situations I have been in that required physical control I used a wrist or arm lock.
  18. I am most interested in the Kicking Kata-sounds intriguing! Thanks!
