My gut tells me that the Olympics should stick to sports, otherwise you risk changing the nature of the art....and it could have negative effects on the art as a whole. Just look at TKD. Olympic Style is a sport but traditional TKD gets compared to it and it's reputation suffers. Personally, I don't care what peole say about the art but it can cause rather heated debates and incidences of bashing . On the other hand, I would love to see some high-end grappling that isn't associated with the UFC (or other NHB type scenario). I think it would be awesome!

Where has all the blocking gone?
ninjanurse replied to octopic's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have noticed a similar trend. It seems like the only block anyone knows is the old elbow to the top of the foot ! But as you said, definitely a plus for head kickers!! -
Today the word "karate" is very generic...most of the public just associates the word with martial arts in general. As far as open tounaments go, usually anyone can enter. They must fight by their rules and kata is judged on technique not style, although they may break the divisions down into hard or soft..it just depends.

Yes, a hook kick. Now that I have taught at three different schools I get all confused with the names...every one is different !!! Why can't we all just be the same?

A wheel kick is reverse turning kick (roundhouse). You deliver sort of like a back kick but follow through with the heel or sole (depending on circumstance) as the striking surface.....and land in the same position you started in. Never heard of a Chicken Kick. Snap is a kick that sort of Flicks out...the damage done by the whipping action. Can be either front, side, back, etc. Thrust is a kick that uses the hips to thrust the kick forward into the target...can also be either front, side, back, etc. Shuffle is as Sam says, each style varies, but you are exchanging the lead leg for the rear leg to generate more power in the kick.

I have a similar technique that involves a backfist..it usually fools them. And if you miss it puts you in a perfect position to land a solid roundhouse to the ribs.

Brazzilian Soo Bahk Jitsu?
ninjanurse replied to brawler1245's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Now that we cleared that up...since this is the third topic on this general subject I am going to close it and refer everybody to: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=255992#255992 It is an older thread that was recently resurrected and contains some good discussion about Soo Bahk do in general. -
A small interjection here....in most systems a black belt symbolizes that you are now worthy to be a student. The kyu's are just tryouts!

No worries sanchin. We were all there once.... maybe twice!!!

From my experience with shotokan, you are testing every day...your nidan test started the day you took your first class. The technical requirements will be taught in class as sensei sees fit, the rest is on you.

I studied in a dojo that encouraged "extreme kicking" on the side, and only for those interested. I'll have to admit it is quite an accomplishment when you finally get one and always a challenge to try another. Also, no one ever even thought about using any of it in sparring...you'd get your tush handed to you by the KJN if you did!
