  2. Of course you should ask your doctor about this as each injury is different as is the treatment. Some doc's don't want you taking anti-inflamatories, some do. As far as competition goes, that's another one you should discuss with him/her. I think it depends on the injury and your patience. Good luck with the surgery and keep us updated.
  3. Wow. Where the heck do you train? I mean, there's nothing wrong with that, it's just that I've never heard of it done that way. I have trained at two schools now that use a "stripe" system for colored belts. Basically it is just a convenient way for the instructor to know where each student is at in their belt level curriculum as they have to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency to get each stripe. Classes can be split easily based on who needs to learn what for the next stripe. It helps to keep kids on track too..no stripes, no promotion!

  5. I have never experienced that although some instructors do have a particular order they tend to do things in. The only thing that is set at our school is the actual warmup which has some curriculum in it and rotates daily but I've never seen anyone get in trouble for going out of order. As far as basics go I teach them in whatever order comes to mind for the day and it depends on the make up of the class too. I usually start with hand techniques and finish with kicks.
  6. For me it depends on what I happen to be doing at the time. Usually it's just a real short kihap that sounds like "ai-yah" but other times it changes to things like "pa-sho"...I know it's silly but it is quite affective at announcing a point and freaking the other guy out!
  7. I agree. Most people do not appreciate what they get for free. When you invest in something the outcome means more. Even if you have limited funds you can always pay with sweat by teaching, cleaning, etc. All the schools I have trained at have had such arrangements for students with limited financial means. If your sensei does not want payment for teaching you (my first sensei was this way) "pay" him by being the best student you can be. Take it upon yourself to clean the dojo and keep things in order... and resume monetary payment when you can.
  8. Any of these tactics are plausible however the first two may not have any impact on the situation given his "autism". Even if he is aware that he uses it as an excuse he may not have any control over it. I say speak to your shihan as he/she may be able to give you advice on how to handle this internally and/or help this young man with his behaviors during class. Good Luck!
  9. A good thought but I have seen products of traditional dojo's do the same thing. Ego is not exclusive to the McDojo set.

  11. Have had 2 classes now and I like it. It is quite relaxing and a definite change of pace!

  13. I hear ya! Somehow our aches & pains seem very insignificant when you see someone like that!
  14. It may be that you are comfortable with him and have seen his fighting style so you know what to expect. It could also be that your just getting better!
  15. Sorry to hear about this . I had a severe back injury many years ago and after I returned to training I had similar back pain for quite some time. It has eased up for the most part but occasionally flares up due to arthritis. If physical therapy is offered consider it as they can often come up with ways to help you compensate through specific exercises. Don't ever give up hope! There is always away to train (even if it is not the same way you're used to) and a way to be involved. Keep us posted !
  16. Good advice Ramymensa! I might add that being out of shape does not preclude you from beginning any martial art. As a beginner you are not required to leap tall buildings and you will get into shape as you progress. Good luck and please keep us updated!
  17. I don't see why you can't learn Qi Qong at your age and I think most instructors would welcome you as a student. Find a school in yur area and check them out.
  18. It is my opinion that an Instructor should set a good example for their students in all aspects of their lives....nutrition being only one of them. If I am going to require my students to run 1.5 miles under 13 minutes I had better be able to do it too-no excuses. If I am going to hammer them about nutirition and hydration I had better be minful of everything I put in my mouth too. If I am going to expect them to practice at home I better do it too. If I am going to require them to lose 20 lbs before their BB test I had better not be 20 lbs overweight. If.... You get my point.
  19. I have recently been to that crossroads that you are referring to...twice! The first time kept me from training for 3 years. Due to a wrist injury, I didn't think I would ever be able to train again (the way I wanted)...so I closed the door and walked away. I was a miserable person for 3 years and I finally went back to it...with a few modifications in my training. I found what was missing in my life-thank you Master Kuek! The second time was this year when a knee problem reared it's ugly head and my doctor told me I would never kick or run again! Never Kick or run? I was devastated! I cried. I talked with my old instructor. I talked with my new instructor. I thought I was at that same crossroads again and would have to chose to close the door again. But...my heart wouldn't let me. I couldn't face spending the rest of my life feeling like I did for those 3 years! I decided that quitting was not an option. The truth is that no matter how bad an injury is there is always a way to train and always something that you can give to the martial arts-thank you Mr. Callos! Never say never! I will do what ever it takes to build my knee back up and change my training so that I can continue to live my passion until I drop dead! GrrARg talk to physical therapist and hit the gym. There are so many ways to build and strengthen your knees other than martial arts. Get strong and find new ways to train at what you love. You'll regret it if you quit.
