  1. Hapkido is a very efficient art, Korean, Striking, Non Competitive, Circular with an emphasis on energy development. It depends where you are in the US but it's just a suggestion.
  2. It belongs in our Dojo, every class begins and ends with it. Every section of the class begins and ends with it. Each conversation begins and ends with it in the Dojo. Respect is shown between individuals and all class members at all times. This is regardless of gender, age or grade. It's a simple motion but it means a great deal to us, our Club is our Family.
  3. Good Luck Wastelander! I hope the Fight goes well for you and you finish it with no serious injury, Go for it!!
  4. You are very Welcome, here's an aging Karateka sending you greetings from just over the Irish Sea. Osu!
  5. The Nunchaku is my Kobudo weapon of choice. I started training with it under a Shorin Kobudo Sensei over 10 years ago. It is difficult, any one can twirl it and make fast repetitive arcs with it. The true art is in the Kata and the Applied Bunkai to those Kata. I was taught 3 of them Haku Nami Shodan Kai Za Minori Sho Kai Za Minori Dai Good Luck!
  6. My Association has adult karate students, many of them train together and they range in grade from 8th Kyu to 4th Dan. Tonight, I went to the Dojo and there was only two other adults there ahead of the more popular Kickboxing Class. "Where's everyone?" I said, "They all trained last night" Said the Sensei, "Sempai Becky is taking the Kickboxers for a run, so it's just you and me Tonight Gareth San!" I paid my £4.50 fee and had my Sensei for an hour and a half on my own. It was hard, almost no breaks. The warm ups were tough and the kihon was thorough. The Kata took all my concentration as I did 6 of them twice. The Sparring took me to another level. I've heard that people can charge as much as £50 an hour for a private lesson, does anyone get such a good deal as me? I know it won't happen often, and it was only by chance tonight, but I really enjoyed it.
  7. It can be difficult to calm your mind, but Chamomile Tea is good.
  8. Last night, my Sensei, our Sempai and myself visited our sister club in another town. We lined up in the correct place in the line, I was with the 4th Kyu's, Becky was with the 1st Kyu's and we wore our belts. Our Sensei, who is grading for 5th Dan in a couple of months joined the Dan grades but wore a plain black belt as a sign of respect because the Sensei that night was of a lower grade than him. The training was hard; the Kihon was called and then done in reverse stance. The Kata was taught by both Sensei, before my Sensei retired to the back of the class to practice his Kata as the rest of us did a strength sapping round robin drill. The Sensei wore body armor at the end and we threw our best reverse punches at him. The face off between the two Sensei was scintillating; each rib crunching punch was greeted with a cheer. A Great night out for the Dragon Martial Arts Family.
  9. Bruce Lee never had any grade, no rank at all from anyone. He was taught two Wing Chun forms from Ip Man, and that's it! If you have the talent, go for it. Just expect to be tested and tested.
  10. If you have the resources to make one, go for it. If you can afford the £800 to buy one and your training can justify it, do like wise. I personally have no room for one or the relevant training to use one. I know of Dojos that have one but they never use it for what it is intended.

  13. I'm back in the clutches of Civilisation IV, another few hours of my life gone to the Syd Myer Demon!!
  14. Having a Calm Purpose doesn't always mean that you are passive; you can strike hard and with a powerful energy without anger and aggression, the tide of your techniques can be a powerful tsunami while your mind is calm and relaxed.
  15. At this level the Cliche "Its all in the Mind" is very true. It depends on his maturity, but to fight each opponent as if he is only fighting his own fears is the best philosophy. Tell him to keep throwing the combinations, make the opponent block then the points will come. Good Luck.
  16. Our Sensei teaches Bunkai at many different levels; he is very good at reading what depth of technique each student can handle, by maturity and psychological responsibility.
  17. I have done Qi Gong for years and more recently Yoga too.
  18. Congratulations! Please continue your good work!
  19. Nothing beats a Sausage and Mustard Bap. We have different Sausage in almost every county in the UK. Each local butcher usually has his own spin on them. We have British Asian Kofte Sausage and French Maguess and Italian Salami, also German works of art. The list is endless.
  20. Perfection of Body? Perfection of Mind? Perfection of Spirit? Perfection of Character? Very few claim these things, but what we can all have is Perfection of Intention.
  21. Hello, I have great respect for the Shotokan style. Welcome and I look forward to reading your posts, Osu!
  22. I agree, training in the Dojo is not enough, students of a Law Enforcement background will not respect you if you don't have years of experience in the job.
  23. I do a Cardio/Resistance training session at the Gym twice a week with two sessions in the Dojo weekly.
  24. Hello and Welcome!
  25. Well done Bob, a pinnacle to a Life's Work!
